Buying stuff in the UK

By Lilikin, in X-Wing

I've stopped buying from Chaos Cards after they proved to have zero interest in actually allowing me to spend my store credit I have with them.

For the playmats (and other X-Wing stuff for that matter), I'm finding Wordery to be a superb deal. Currently they have the playmats for £26.71 for example, plus an offer until the end of August where you can get an extra 10% off when buying 2+ items.

As for supporting your FLGS, if you have one, do so lest it disappears. Even if I see an offer I can't refuse through an online store, I then spend the money I saved at the FLGS to make sure they're still getting some of my support :)

I've never had an issue spending mine have you tried contacting them? When prices changed for wave seven I asked if I had to cancel my order and buy it again to benefit(ordered a while back) in less than 24 hours I had an e-mail informing me they've refunded the difference.

They'll get it back soon of course I just have to wait until after next weeks trip to the dentist just in case.

Seem reasonable people to me.

I'd second what Hobo is saying. They even counted my store credit towards the total for better free shipping with my Wave 7 order.

Amazon is not awesome outside the US. Most merchants either don't post international or charge like wounded bulls if they do. Book Depository does not charge postage worldwide and is usually cheaper than Amazon but stock selection is often limited.

Not in the UK so can't offer any advice beyond Ebay and using local merchants to save on postage, or combining a buying trip to a nearby city with some other activity.

Unlike Americans we don't have cheap petrol so such a trip could easily see you spend as much on petrol as you would p&p, same applies for going by train it's not a cheap affair.

Yup. The basic problem is that to use my store credit (a refund from a previous issue), you have to pay by card, but their payment processor has a problem whereby they're not recognising certain debit cards (after checking with my bank, it looks like it may be because Mastercard debit cards are relatively new to the market). When I emailed them asking how I could spend my money with them, they just stopped answering my emails. The overall impression I've gotten from them: They couldn't give 2 ***** - they already have my money, and the fact that I want something for it is my problem, not theirs.

Sorry to hear that mate.

Try living in Australia mate. My home city of Brisbane has a population of ~2 million and hosts two game stores that stock X wing. I would buy from them except their prices are 25% more than I can find on internet suppliers. If I ever would want to enter the national tournaments they are held in Sydney or Melbourne which are one or two days travel by car respectively. My home state of Queensland is 2.5 times the area of the British Isles making regional tournaments up to 5-6 hours drive away.

Do they use Paypal?

You can link Paypal to your debit card so when you make a purchase it deducts from the debit card account. Most internet sellers do have Paypal as an option. I use it for most internet purchases linked to a low limit debit card. Never had any problems.

They do, but you can't use store credit whilst paying by Paypal, only when paying by card.

But enough about this issue I think. I only threw it in as a warning. (After all, if only the people with good experiences say anything, and those with bad stay silent, readers will only get a distorted picture of what to expect.)

Just bought a K-Wing and Punisher from Wordery - £21 plus change! That saves me enough to buy a whole extra fighter at my FLGS :)

One thing I have noticed with Wordery though is that their search system leaves a bit to be desired. My tip is to use google to search for "Wordery X-Wing K-Wing" (or replace K-Wing with whichever ship you're looking for) in order to find the product you want if you can't find it through a search on the website itself.

I've had no problems buying stuff in the uk, and Amazon is often the best place.

However, a corollary to the OP question is, given the dearth of flgs in the UK, where can one play XWing in the UK? I live in the Cotswolds and can't find anywhere nearby to play at the moment.

I mostly play at the war/board gaming offshoot of my local RP club. Clubs are quite common, especially if you are close to a university town (which I am not currently).

If you're on the Facebooks, the UK/Ireland X-Wing group is worth joining. It's very active, and even if you're not interested in tournament play there's a decent chance you'll find a group of players in striking distance of you.

Thanks, I'll give that a go.

As much as I hate the Facebooks, it does have its uses.
