Bye Rules Revisited.

By Mariozi, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello Pilots

On a recent 3-round swiss event one player lost his first 2 games and got a bye on the last round.

He ended up in front of a player that lost his first game, won his second game (5-140) and lost the third game 100-0.

So he actually placed in front of a player that won an reall game without winning anything.

Shouldnt we use the bye as 3-100 mod.win?

Or 5-100?

Thoughts? Anyone has history of unfair byes?

Why should a "real" win be more fair to reward then a bye? It's not the players fault he was randomly chosen to skip a game due to uneven number of players, so why should he be extra punished?

I don't actualy have any strong feelings as to how a bye should be handeled, I just don't think your example is unquestionably unfair.

One of the major points of bye scoring is to give whoever gets one enough of a boost so that they don't end up getting another one. Reducing the scoring hurts that goal.

I also think it's a little harsh to only look at it as "didn't win anything". No, the bye player didn't win anything, but he didn't even have the opportunity to do so for that game. Who's to say what that bye game might have been? Might just as easily have been a win.

And really, who's that concerned about a point or two worth of ranking at the lower quarter of the players?

The only thing I don't like about byes is the fact that you miss out on a game.

I'd rather play and lose than win by bye, just because I've paid to attend, want the most games as possible.

There seem to be a number of different ways that a bye will work. In all cases it gets counted as a full, 5 point, win as it is pretty hard to lose against nothing.

It is the MoV scored with a bye that can put people up in arms. I mean is it a 200 point MOV although you didn't destroy anything? Maybe when the bye is given as a reward for winning something else but to me a random bye certainly shouldn't be worth that much. Maybe a 100 MoV makes more sense as there are only your 100 points in the game but that MoV is no better than a draw although it does award more match points.

Now I really want to know what these 3-100, 5-100, 5-140 shorthand means. Is this Match Points/MoV because when I see ## - ## I'm thinking points killed on each side of a match.
