Armada Tactics News questions

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

Ok so I want to start doing Tactics videos and list building videos.

My questions are;

What do you want to see?

What way do you want it shown?

And do you want them short, medium, or full length videos?

I am not the usual customer, because I think I read a lot and try and think a lot about the game. However, here's my opinion:

Short - not a video watcher and i want information. not mulling or shooting the $%&&.

Decent visuals of the game - vassal, clear tabletop, etc. no real need to look at your head a lot. Do a voice chat for that.

actual strategy - meaning I don't like seeing the cards read aloud to me, im not 12. I don't to know what they CAN do, but how you've actually used them in games. What are movement strategies that cannot be simply seen? Neb slow rolls... AF circling formations. AF with enhanced armament and gunnery team for 4red snipe shots on 2 targets. fighter placement against all ship lists.

Please don't go over the cards. Do not overview that the ISD has 8 dice. Do not tell us the ISD has a speed of 3. We have the card. We can see that. Show us how you plan to use your 3 speed. What's your movement plan? What do you think should protect your flank?

Discuss objectives if you want to.

Exactly what Blail Blerg says, exactly

Do a video how you can make Insidious useful!

A good idea would be counter tactics against popular list.

For example how to beat something like the vggg list by bringing lots of ships or making sure your big ships cannot be pinned and stick close together etc.

I like it - a counter-meta/netlisting video.

To speak about the tone over content, I'd really enjoy if you were keeping an open mind about ship and list building. I really hate it when people are too prescriptive as this "This ship should only be used with X, Y and Z upgrades and deployed like this on the battlefield". Not only does this promote netlists and boring battles due to repeating opponents (I'm attending a tournament on the 20th, and only 2 Rebels for 6 Imperials, I'm pretty sure I'm going to see Rhymerballs and Demolishers all aroun *sigh*).

In terms of format, I think it'd work well if you could focus each videos on a ship/card/maneuver and explore what it can be used for in different circumstances. For example, ECM is pretty self explanatory but it works very differently between an AFMK2 and a Corvette.

In terms of format again, if you're going with videos then take advantage of that to show the actual tabletop.positions and dice rolls. Experimentation and physical simulation of battles has helped me a lot to train and avoid doing mistakes, so I'm expecting it's going to work for other people if they can visually associate what you are talking about.

I personally enjoy videos that are 10-15 minutes long. Short enough to be watched without dedicating too much time, long enough to be informative and cover a topic.

____

In terms of content, I think it would be good if you could have multiple people intervening. Brainstorming is always good to analyze further I found.

I'd personally love if you could do a bit on the CR90A :P I might sound like a lousy Rebel commander, but despite all my theorizing I really can't make this ship for even if my life dependent on it. Funnily enough, I have no problem with the CR90B and actually do quite well with it !

It's just the blank red dice on the CR90A that kill me :P So, maybe there's a use for it that I missed.

Finally, fleet formations. It's cool to think about individual ships and how they boost with each other, but as any war(game) position is crucial. And how fleet formations work and influence the enemy needs to be adressed.

Right now, I don't think I am even qualified to make tactic videos. I can't win tournaments, I lose so much. . . Yea, call it a crisis of faith in one's ability but I just feel as if I am a bad player.

Then dont be authoritative. Be explorative.

And play to learn much faster. So you can be more authoritative.

Do you have an example for me to go off of?

And please please please please don't thing I am being rude or anything. I am just trying to learn something I have never done. I am currently pretty morose by being beaten so soundly.

It's funny. I have not been beaten so bad since pretty much my first tournament. . . Wow. . .

Lyr, be willing to be wrong!

The dudes on IFF are anything but authoritative! We make statements all the time with huge asterisks saying we only have some idea what we're talking about! But just talking about it helps us (and hopefully listeners) explore the game further.

Hearing people talk about the game is enough to get the juices flowing. Great wisdom can come from those who are finding their way.

Thats nonsense son, I and my league night buddies have all watched your vids and found them humorous and informative, despite the odd hiccup here and there, they are fine. Work on your craft, listen to the pointers these great folks here have given you. As far as your game play, stop the wobblin' lower lip, your better than that, and you know it.....and so do we :)

Cheers!

Thanks for that. You have no idea how much that means to me.

I'd turn Dano's dictum around, and go with the people of Al-Anon: "you fake it 'till you make it."

Which is what the others are saying: be a little more humble about it. Steven et al. on IFF aren't pretending to be the Sun Tzus or Grand Admiral Thrawns of Armada; they're just guys who are enthusiastic about a game gabbing about what they think they know, and in the process they inform and entertain us.

As I've told you and written on these forums on several occasions, you have a brain that analyzes and assesses a situation very rapidly. I can't keep up fast enough to see how comprehensive your analyses are, and I do suspect you sometimes miss the forest for the trees. But nevertheless, you've clearly got an astounding cognitive intellect that you shouldn't start to doubt because I beat you in a few more matches than you beat me. After all, I didn't fall off the dumb truck either.

You also have a lot of your identity and sense of self wrapped up in this game, and I think you're taking things to heart more than is healthy. You would do well to take this game as well as yourself a lot less seriously than you do. There's more that I could say that is best discussed offline, but suffice to say I think you need to learn to have more fun with this.

Maybe I am. . . I think I have lots of fun which even includes the losses since they assist in my learning. I do get wrapped up in the game though. . .

@Lyraeus : Nobody is qualified right now to be authoritative on tactics, not while the game is that young :) On the contrary, exploring tactics that look sound and reporting on their effectiveness is what will allow the community, as a whole to get smarter about the game :)

I'm certainly glad that that's the case. Getting wrapped up in the game is certainly part of the fun, but not when you seem to be attaching meaning to the game that goes beyond it just being a game.

MoffZen is right - nobody is an expert at this stage - but you're pretty close. Because I happened to beat on you this evening, you don't seem to have taken it to heart that you came out ahead of Shmitty today. He also has a tactics blog (which he just started yesterday), and he came in 2nd at the national championships.

Whenever I'm feeling in a funk regarding... things I just track this little gem down on You-Tube or just read it...

The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!

That little gem of wisdom is from a little friend of mine, a Mr Rocky Balboa.

Chin up matey, you're an national treasure in this forum!

^_^ :)

I gotta say. you seem like a nice guy to me. =) Although perhaps a little rambly.

Try and explore an idea that is sound in your head. And show how it worked or didn't work. Analyze it, explain it. Overall, teach as a peer if you cannot as a teacher.

Thank you all. I feel a lot better.

Well, time to start designing some scripts then
