Tycho Tournament List

By CruzinToVictory, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I love A Wings so I wanted to try and fit one into a list for a tournament I'm going to soon. This is what I came up with:

Tycho Celchu (38)

A-Wing (26), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Proton Rockets (3), Push the Limit (3), Experimental Interface (3), Daredevil (3)

Blue Squadron Pilot (31) x 2

B-Wing (22), Fire-Control System (2), Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

I playtested it twice and it didn't go very well, but I feel like it has potential. Any thoughts on things I can improve?

You could remove the HLC's and add in a Z-95, that's an extra attack every round.

This isn't really what you asked (I discovered this as I re-read your post) but at regionals I ran an all A-Wing list:

4 Green Squadron Pilots with A-Wing Test Pilot, Chardaan Refit, Push the Limit, Autothrusters, and Predator. Predator is a "good enough" target lock on a 2-attack ship. Autothrusters is a "good enough" evade if you fly well. PTL can give you focus+boost on nearly every turn (or one of them and evade if you need to) So, if you fly your ships well, it's like getting a poor man's version of all four of your actions every turn.

This all presupposes that you can fly them like an ace, which I cannot. Even then, you're just not really dumping a whole lot of damage in to enemy ships per turn. So, my strategy hinged on the following:

1) Be very good at flying ships. I practiced a lot and if this list did anything for me, it was to teach me how to visualize movements within millimeters. I could plan out maneuvers well in advanced, brush by obstacles with the hair on my cheek, and block multiple ships with one A-Wing.

2) Pick a target and lure him in to arcs. Do this as soon as possible. It doesn't have to be turn 0 but it does need to be fairly early, especially if you want to capitalize on your speed.

3) Keep A-Wings alive. No gambling. If you're thinking about performing a maneuver or an action combination that puts a ship in grave danger, don't.

4) Take down your target and run away for the rest of the match. If another target presents itself and you can set up the arcs, more power to you. Otherwise, the goal is to stall for time.

I had a rough time against Brobots but the rest of my matches were pretty close. Still couldn't come out of it with a winning record, though.

I love the A-Wings but I couldn't come up with a better all-A-Wing list than this. I thought it was really fun to fly but I couldn't make it reliable. However, with what I learned from flying it, it allowed me to jump right in to flying Fel at nationals.

38 points is a lot to spend on an A-Wing. I think you might be focussed too much on trying to make the biggest pile pf stress tokens that you can for Tycho and not enough about what you need him to accomplish in your list. I think that Jake makes a better Proton Rocket delivery boy than Tycho because he can use PTL to get a TL and a focus and them boost or barrel roll into range one. Tycho doesn't have Jake's action economy but he does have a PS that lets you get to 10 with VI. This will give you a better chance to catch the ships you really want to hit with that rocket. Daredevil is cool and all but it is expensive, especially since you are taking Experimental Interface with it. Swap Daredevil for VI , drop Experimental Interface, and pick up Autothrusters. That'll help keep Tycho alive against turrets and when he is too far out to arc dodge well. That should have shaved 3 points off of Tycho.

HLCs are nice and all, but I find that I usually end up in a knife fight when I fly B-Wings so the HLCs don't get much play. They also push your B-Wings up over 30 points which makes it hard to get enough value out of them. That'll save another 14 points giving you 17 to spend.

That'll get you a Z-95 with some ordnance or a Prototype A-Wing with Autothrusters. If you wanted to make some more cuts you could squeeze in something a little beefier but that would probably mean either dropping the Proton Rocket or switching out Tycho for Jake and dropping the FCS on the Bs. Three naked Blue Squads should fit with Jake (PTL, VI, Autothrusters, Proton Rockets) with a point to spare.

Get rid of that Tycho and snap Jake there. For 34 points you can mount autothrusters too.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Jake is a very good idea, I didn't really think of it because I just fell in love with the sheer ridiculousness of maneuvers I could pull off with Tycho.

Sadly I don't have much time to practice before this tournament, so I'll likely fall back on a list that I'm more familiar with, but I plan on tinkering a bit more to find something that works.

That 4 A Wing list looks like a lot of fun (I think that's the "Green Arrow" one in another post if I'm not mistaken). I only own 3 A Wings but I'll have to try it out one day. In general I love "interceptor" type ships, as the style has always appealed to me, but I don't own any imperial ships, and the Scum Syck just doesn't do it for me.

Keeping with you original concept (an A-Wing with B-Wings) here is something:

Arvel with Test Pilot, Refit, Stealth Device, and Intimidation

Blue Squad with Fire Control System x 3

You can also swap out the Stealth Device for Autothrusters to swap out the Fire Control Systems for Accuracy Correctors.

Either way you have Arvel blocking and lowering Agility allowing the B's to open up on the victim.

I'll just second the thoughts about Jake vs. Tycho. Overall I've found Jake to be a little more user-friendly as long as that VI is on there. I believe the key to success with the ace A-wings is always moving after the rest of the ships. This past weekend in a tournament I watched a Bossk in the Hounds' Tooth pointlessly try to run away from Jake and get him in arc. (They were the last two ships). Both ships were at full health... You can probably guess who won that. It was comical. Jake moving second made that all possible.
