Why are Scum small ships so slow?

By Sierra Romeo Charlie, in X-Wing

Just something I noticed today. Not a single Scum small ship can do a 5-straight. The fastest would be the Starviper with a 4-straight + Boost.

As far as I can remember, both Rebels and Empire have multiple small ships that can do a 5-straight:

Empire - every TIE variant

Rebels - A-wing, E-wing

Will we ever see a Scum ship that can keep up? It does seem odd that the Scyk didn't get that option at least. It's supposed to be an Interceptor. You would think people flying ships involved in less-than-legal activities would need a quick way to avoid the authority figures out there.

Rebels and Imperials have some of the best engineering minds in the galaxy designing their ships as part of an ever-escalating battle between good and evil.

Scum have Jawas who seem pretty convincing when they tell you the hyperdrive on your used starfighter won't fall off once you leave atmosphere, but there's something shifty in their demeanor.

I mean sure, you're buying second-hand (or third or fourth or twentieth in the case of the Moldy Crow) but as far as I know, plenty of Scum make "special modifications" to their ships.

They may not necessarily survive more than one run-in with the local authorities, but if it'll go fast enough to get you away this time, you can use your new ill-gotten gains to fix your ship for the next go-round.

Yeah, because MandalMotors isn't one of the premier starship manufacturers in the galaxy or anything.

They've only got one small ship with a native green 3-turn as well.

They make the Scyk and the StarViper. But I'm not saying they aren't slow. I'm saying that the idea that the Rebels and Empire have all the best minds creating their ships and the Scum just have junk is nonsense. The StarViper is one of the most advanced starships in the galaxy.

It's just...you know...not that fast.

The StarViper was the first ship with native Boost that didn't also have a 5-straight, right?

Because they Arnt military grade ships but are made for the civilian market so, even the hutts don't have the spending power of the empire.

Jumpmaster will have a 5 I would think.

Lexus is one of the premier car makers in the world. But if I see a Lexus for sale at one of those "no credit check" dealerships, I'm not going to assume it's had a great maintenance history.

I mean, MandalMotors sold these things to the Hutts. Exactly how concerned do you think Jabba was about paying for routine maintenance standards?

Honestly the Star Viper dial was a bit underwhelming, it's conceivably just about the only Scum ship that could have had green hards, unless they get the Clawcraft.

Lack of greens is what kills the StarViper for me. I love all the ones but it is **** hard to recover from stress.

Khirwargarrble Ace w/ Wingman might make a good escort for a StarViper?

Oh, I think smugglers, bounty hunters, and thug enforcers all could have good reason to maintain fast, fast ships. There are plenty of real life examples of lowlifes and punks who pour love into their muscle cars and street rods. We'll get some.

Ixiyen-class fast attack craft with a Confederate Flag on the roof?

The Aggressor came out at the same tim, so two ships like that...

There's fast and there's fast. There's drug smuggling planes that are faster than police helicopters, perhaps, but not faster than F16s.

fluff-wise (and something FFG translated gameplay-wise), a lot of S&V is second-hand crap that come from military surplus. The z-95s and Ys are at the forefront of this.

The blacksun breaks this with cool black-market **** (special-K and Viper) and then you have the super-customized bounty hunters (igs, boba, dengar etc.)

even lacking a 5-straight, it's not like all their ships are slow. Have you ever seen a large-base boost that was slow? Even the bloody shuttle runs laps around the table, and I know it's got nothing on the firespray or aggressor

Am I the only one that doesn't use the 5 on my dials very often?

It is possible to fly a ship without Push The Limit.

I dunno about you guys, but when I fly brobots, they always seem to have a awfully hard time going slow. On a large ship, 3 + boost = small 5

I've never run PTL on a StarViper. It's the times that I need to use that S-Loop or that I burn Inertial Dampeners and I can't pull a green for the next two or three rounds that gets me.

It's a little crazy how much faster large-base ships are than small-base, even not factoring boost. That's one of the reasons I specified small-base ships. Any large-base with a 4-forward + boost is going to be the fastest in the game already.

But I don't like to fly large-base ships, I prefer my ships both small and fast, lets them reposition early or GTFO if a furball forms and I don't want them stuck there. I did forget about the Scyk 5-K, that is at least a useful move for a cannon-toter.

No, it's clearly not. Otherwise the Rebels or Empire would take interest.
