Commercials

By Wayne Argabright, in X-Wing

So why hasn't FFG advertised the "Ghost" during the rebels cartoon?? I mean normally that show seems like one big commercial to me anyway??

Maybe because the new shows haven't started? Which means they still might.

Besides that, has FFG ever done a commercial on tv?

Commercials during prime time (especially during a popular show) are really, really, really, really expensive.

Also, why would they advertise a toy that's 6+ months out?

Just thinking all the potential folks they could hit with that though. I know once target stopped selling the core set X-wing was pretty much a Game store only thing around here. Except for Barnes & Nobel.. and why on earth does my Font and size keep changing!!!

Would be a good idea... they would sell more core sets too. Even a quick 'coming soon' teaser spot wouldnt be too expensive on a Cable network channel like DisneyXD. And the end of December isn't really 6 months away; Seems like perfect timing.

A message to FFG: I'll star in your tv/youtube commercials for free if you show me roll a Yahtzee on screen. (5 red dice roll-all hits/crits, even blanks).

Also, why would they advertise a toy that's 6+ months out?

Rebels starts again in Oct. and Wave8 is expected by year's end (if not- a week later)... that's perfect timing to start a coming soon campaign.

I do not share your optimistic appraisal of the situation. February at the earliest is my guess for wave 8.

However, OP was asking why they haven't advertised it, not 'will they'. They still might, and if they start in October, even with a December release, it's a little odd to be that early for a toy, even a grown up one. Still not reason they can't advertise other X-Wing products, especially if they happen to be Episode 7 related. But I think it comes back to trustybroom's post, national prime time TV ads are just too dang expensive for what is really still just a niche market.

One word: demographics.

X-wing is ages 14+

SW Rebels is boys 6-14

why by a micro machine when you can by something that looks cooler and is part of a game.. as for demographics how many folks on here have watched rebels and are older than 14? granted that is kind of like preaching to the choir on this site...

Hand a 6-year old your x wing ships some time. The reason will quickly become apparent.

Also, television advertising is ridiculously expensive. The relatively small target market of the x-wing miniatures game makes it extremely cost ineffective.

There is a very good reason most wargames companies dont advertise on tv.

Its not actually about the cost.

Its actually about supply and demand.

Consider this. Xwing is a niche wargame, there production faciities for FFG frequently mean they cant meet the demand at times with only 'gamers already into it' wanting falcons, bwings, whatever.

If they TV advertise and all of a sudden 5 million new players pick up the game there simply would not be the stock to supply the demand. Having people who *cant* buy your product but want to is not a good thing.

Its why when I was with marketing with Games Workshop we never advertised on TV.

We were the biggest games company at the time with our own plastics production plant but we knew that if 'warhammer' became the 'next big thing' we'd never be able to meet the demand and that also it would be a craze that would spike and then die down - that plays havoc with your business plans.

Back in the 90s in the UK they re-released a range of 'thunderbirds' toys including a Tracey Island playset. The Tracey Island playset was impossible to get that christmas as they could not make enough and a lot of kids were disapointed and a lot of parents very angry.

Essentially I think a TV advert would wreck FFG as if it caught the imagination of the general public and became as popular as a game like say 'monopoly' in households then it would take a long time to ramp up production to meet demand.

As with many things in life... logistics in play.
