Next Deluxe Expansion: The Grey Havens

By Teamjimby, in The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

Ah yes Eowyn does too. Why did I not think of her. I don't really count Galadriel as without Nenya the 4 willpower cannot be used for questing anyway. Cirdan is a fantastic target for light of valinor. Fair and Perilous (as others have already mentioned) is also beastly with him giving him +4 attack (more than any other Noldor or Silvan except Galadriel who cannot attack so whatevs..)

What is Fair and Perilous?

Thank you! Really awesome card with a beautiful art (of course it's from Magali).

Edit : In which pack will it be? I have check Cardboard of the rings website and their facebook page and I can't find anything, not even the picture you link.

I think its a spoiler for Across the Ettenmoors. They interviewed Matt Newman (pretty sure it was Matt?) on a recent podcast and he brought 3 cards along and gave them a choice of just one to spoil (based on a very vague description of each) and they chose this one. I think one of the others interacts with the victory display (was probably none return as we did not yet have this spoiled I believe) and I can't remember what the other was. A leadership card that does something I think?

Interacts with side quests. Probably was the Dúnedain Message, which was already spoiled in the announcement.

That's right side quest interaction. Nah surely it was something else, Dunedain Message was already spoiled. Surely he would not bring a card already completely spoiled.

That what I like about this game. Bring us something really new. Bring us to some corners of the middle-earth where we can see something new not only Frodo story. Saga expansions is good but thanjs gods is only one of the stream of this game. Sounds like at that moment lotr lcg start to dominate on MECCG become the best Tolkien card game in my opibion! F*************G Amazing Expansion!!!!!!

I literally squee'd aloud when I saw this. Multiple times.

Well, Angmar Awakened was fun, but it can't hold a candle to this. Bring on The Grey Havens!

I've read the entire article three times now. I can't seem to stop looking at it...

That statline on Cirdan (plus his being Noldor) really makes me want to feed him to the Balrog so I can resurrect him at 5, 3, 3, 4. Light of Valinor, Anduril, Fair and Perilous, man that could be fun.

Still catch ny breath… .

That expansion really something new for game now!!!! I even ready to play it in Standard mode!

Whoa. FFG, clearly you did good here. ;)

This looks amazing. It's so cool to see everyone so excited! Yay LOTR LCG community!

And with Map of Eärnil, it's easily reusable. The map is even a thematic fit.

Also there's Nor am I a Stranger+Herugrim. Not thematic, but a very reliable 6 attack.

I guess the same combo has already existed for Glorfindel though.

Note to self: design janky deck which can simultaneously fire NAIAS+Herugrim+Snowmane *and* Light of Valinor+Fair and Perilous on Cirdan/Glorfindel once every, like, 10 games or so.

I was always undrer the impression that Numenor was swallowed by the sea along with Ar-Pharazon's fleet when he tried to invade Arda.

"And Andor, the Land of Gift, Numenor of the Kings, Elenna of the Star of Earendil, was utterly destroyed. For it was nigh to the east of the great rift and it's foundations were overturned, and it fell and went down into the darkness and is no more."

Was very excited to see this. Great area to visit, new Ship cards, etc. A whole new flavor for a Deluxe Expansion.

The highest peak on the island was said to have survived the destruction of Numenor. Perhaps we investigate this and discover that a little more land than initially thought survived the destruction or perhaps we have to do some diving to discover the lost treasures there!!

Perhaps we will also explore Tol Fuin/Tol Morwen! Remnants of the great Beleriand!

So you think we'll get 2 leadership events that interact with side quests? Unlikely in my opinion.

Also, Glaurung's reaction made me happy. I also think this game has surpassed MECCG in many ways, and this is the best example, but there's still things MECCG covered way better in its very first set (sadly the Blue Wizards was one of them, which we'll surely never get), but namely, elven artifacts and the whole artifice corruption theme, which was essential in Tolkien (I'll never get tired of saying this.) Assuming we'll possibly get Narya in this expansion, this could be a chance to explore it. Maybe we'll get some treasure themed player cards.

From the same article: "After the destruction of Númenor, some amongst the Exiles believed that the summit of the mountain remained as an isle in Belegaer. Some Dúnedain are even said to have set sail trying to reach the isle, from which the legend held that one could catch a glimpse of the unreachable Aman."

Sounds like the next cycle could be some mystical quest set beyond the seas. Pretty awesome.

"Finally, The Grey Havens also gives you your first opportunity to take control of Círdan the Shipwright (The Grey Havens, 1) and the Elves of Mithlond, who take the Noldor themes introduced in the Angmar Awakened cycle to the next level, introducing cards that increase in power with each copy of that card in the discard pile, and cards that grow more powerful depending on the card that's on the top of your discard pile!"

This gives us an idea of what some of the noldor discard mechanics will be. Some cards will get stronger depending how many copies of the same card are in the discard pile (this will be interesting as at most there can only be 2 in the discard pile due to the limit of 3 of any card in a deck) which is pretty cool, sort of the opposite to some of the encounter effects in Deadmen's Dike. Then we have cards that will grow more powerful depending on what the top card of our discard pile is. This also sounds really cool and could encourage deckbuilding with few events (so that the top card of your discard stays the same for as long as possible) or allows cards like Erestor or Cirdan himself to boost this effect as when you discard your hand from Erestors effect I imagine you can choose the order, similarly Cirdan makes you discard a card (after you get to draw an additional one) so each turn you can make sure the card on top of your discard pile is one that will boost the card with this new mechanic.

I really really like the sound of these effects.

This looks amazing! Unfortunately it will be about 2 years until I catch up with everyone else get to play it (I'm still stuck in Mirkwood), but still... boats! Very cool.

This looks amazing!!! I was a bit worried when I tried to load the page this morning. I'm in Vietnam right now and the page would take forever to load. I was like "Noooo, please don't block the site!" After some time, it loaded in all its glory! **** this looks amazing. I'm most excited about the boats. I always love objective cards players can use during the quest.

Achievement Unlocked: I'm on a boat!

PS: just noticed he is a Noldor ... Silvan would fit better since he never took the journey.

Most of the Noldor in the game never took the journey, because they were born after the Noldor came back. The only ones we have who've actually been to Valinor are Glorfindel and Galadriel.

That aside, although Cirdan is of the Teleri, since they simplified the Elves down to just Noldor and Silvan, it feels to me like Cirdan fits in better with the more noble Noldor rather than the forest-dwelling Silvans.

Indeed most did not, but they are descendants of the ones who did, i should have made more clear

But you have a very strong point that he should be a Noldor, i agree on that, it was the better solution after all

Maybe they'll do what the new Netrunner box is doing and have cards that say "Limit 6 per deck".

In Silmarillion, there is the following :

"Among the Exiles many believed that the summit of Meneltarma, the Pillar of Heaven, was not drowned for ever, but rose again above the waves, a lonely island lost in the great waters"

The Dunedains made trips to find it but that never happened. So this is what we will be looking for probably.

On the slopes of Meneltarma where the tombs of the Kings of Numenor, so there could be relics to be found

Perhaps we will also explore Tol Fuin/Tol Morwen! Remnants of the great Beleriand!

That could be too much for myself, I would get nuts :P

Just saw this now and am overjoyed. The opportunity to touch places and events prior to the 3rd Age, however fleetingly and indirectly, is very exciting to me. The new direction of the game in this cycle, with its emphasis on maritime journeys and exploration is also thrilling to hear. A great part of my reading enjoyment of Tolkien's material comes from the many wondrous places he reveals to us. Simply gazing upon the cover art of The Grey Havens box gave me just such a sense of wonder. And the way this set arrives after Angmar Awakened, with its focus on the Dunedain and Noldor, feels just right.

I had always wondered if we might see a Cirdan hero. Now we know.

Fabulous, just fabulous news.
