Does Deadman trigger if you leave the play area?

The ship is destroyed, so the wording seems right. But where does it happen? Along the maneuver template where the ships encounters the edge or at its final spot?

There is nothing blocking you, so I'd say the final spot. Interesting potential tactic though.

A friend of mine had someone pull this against his Han at a regional. Judge ruled that Han took the damage. I just hadn't ever thought of it before he mentioned it.

I shoulda noticed this interaction ages ago!

Deadman's Switch is a way to turn Death to an advantage
Flying off the board is the only way to guarantee Death.

An injured deadman Z near a Han that is skirting the edge is probably better off just flying off and doing 1 damage.

If it works.

I would go with as soon as the ship encounters the edge along the maneuver template. This is something that needs clarification. However, its an extremely rare thing to happen.

No - it is only the final position of the ship base that determines whether the ship has left the play area (and been destroyed) - this is consistent with the rules for overlapping ships, overlapping obstacles, and leaving the play area.

Q: After a ship executes a maneuver, if its maneuver template

is outside the play area but the ship’s base is not outside

the play area, has that ship fled the battlefield?

A: No.

(FAQ page 16)

So it follows that it is only the final position of the ship base that counts when it comes to determining the blast radius of Dead Man's Switch, in the event that a ship is destroyed as a result of leaving the play area

To clarify. The reason for this is because mechanically a ship does not travel "along" the template.

How can you be within range 1 of something off the board? Where would you measure from? It's off the board.

It only has to be partially off the board to be off the board.

You measure from the bits of it that remain.

This was a ruling on Seismic Charges a while back, but would apply here.

The only thing that would make me hesitate in this case would be the description of the nashtah pup deployment rule:

"When the YV-666 equipped with the Hound's Tooth Upgrade card is destroyed (but has not fled the battlefield), it may deploy the Nashtah Pup Pilot before it is removed from the play area. To deploy, follow these steps(...)"

It seems to me as though the trigger for "ship destroyed" is not the same as when fleeing the battlefield. Still, that would be my gut feeling, which is not the same as actual written rules.

Were this case to happen, I guess there would be no other choice but to estimate where the ship would land (depending on just how far off the board it went) and do the detonation from there. Hopefully it's not too far off the board or on the neighboring game's tokens / templates :P
