Female players during tournaments?

By IG88E, in X-Wing

Where is the misogyny in this thread?

Jokes about "playing privately" and "happy endings." Jokes about "making dinner" and "sandwiches." And the inevitable "but I was just joking" attitude that pushes the blame onto the other party for "not having a sense of humor."

Jokes are supposed to be witty, clever, funny. "Hur dur, women are good for sex and domestic duties" isn't any of those things.

And to be clear: it's not that these things can't be said (my wife and I say far more horrible things to each other in jest than I've ever seen on these boards); it's that you have to know your audience, and when you're talking about a public forum on the internet, you basically can't know the audience due to the size of the community and the fact that most of them are lurkers.

That results in the stuff that passes as humor in your boys-club FLGS/garage/dorm not flying here (or at least discouraging the women from sticking around).

Edit: meant to add that paragraph 2 was explicitly echoing Astrella's comment above. Oops.

But... But... I'm good for sex and domestic duties too...

My wife equates me playing X-Wing to me playing X-Box, both are things that I do when I should be doing something more productive.

This is pretty much my girlfriend's attitude. She and her friends like to sew and bake, my friends and I like to play with plastic Star Wars dudes, and we all like to meet up for casual game night. Like others have been saying, it's probably a generational thing. I know I'll be playing all the games I can with any kids I have, regardless of gender, and all the geeky fathers out there will be doing the same. When those kids grow up we will probably not be having this silly conversation any more.

There are plenty of real offences in this world. Cases of crying wolf are far outnumbered by people who suffer in silence. And I'm not talking about female workers who have to put up with male colleagues' dirty jokes. Ignorance and bigotry have caused so much suffering in this world, I don't believe in just letting it be the status quo. Get to know folks real well, you tend to find some bad **** in their life. Even white privileged males. So, I always have time for people's issues. Most times you just listen and nod. Sometimes you save someone's life.

Small price to pay for suffering the Rachel Dolezals of this world.

This particular variation does seem primarily a Western thing. Problem is, the pseudo-victims tend to drown out real victims due to yelling louder, networking, etc, and the media loves to go along with this because hey, free clicks. Allowing them to peddle this stuff is UTTERLY counter-productive and damaging.

It's like that story in Rolling Stone about the assaults on campus and that one girl who was abused by a number of guys at a party... Expect the whole thing was completely untrue. The party never happened, she was never attacked, she was lying about the whole thing.

The fact is, that that story did more damage to women then just about anything else could, because it became a very public and publicized case of crying wolf, and being proven to be a lair, which sadly will make the next time such a story is reported to be taken less seriously then it should.

Yea! Things were better when offended parties didn't feel like they had the right to speak up! It's PC run amok now that they're finally calling me out!

See it's sarcasm like this that doesn't help the discussion at all, in fact it makes it even harder to get the discussion going. So if that was your plan congrats, you achieved your goal.

And on that note, I will once more start to ignore this thread. The brief moment of actual discussion has been destroyed and the downhill slide will start again and continue to pick up steam.

Morning update. I've had tea only so far.

I skipped breakfast this morning. I was going to have some toast, but then realized that the "toaster over" that we have doesn't really make toast all that quickly. So I ended up getting a donut on the way to work. Mmmm.. sugary carbs!

How was your tea?

It was pretty good. Peppermint tea with honey. Had some things to take care of so I didn't get the chance to make all that food until recently. I made what I said: bacon, eggs and put salsa verde on the eggs. Made another cup of tea; this time it was engish breakfast tea with a spoonful of sugar and some milk.

Men use psychological attacks to throw their opponents concentration and get them to make mistakes it's not personal just how we are you see a weakness like my mate robs bald spot and you use it but he'll in turn mock my receding hairline it's water off a ducks back.

Women tend to take things more personally however, when some 12 year old makes a comment he's not being misogynistic he's just trying to psych you out and get under your skin to throw your performance.

It's not that men don't want women sharing their hobby it's that they don't want to be forced into changing how they play, we don't go into female orientated hobbies and demand they change to suit us so it rubs some people wrong when we are told we are having fun wrong and must change to suit them.

There is give and take you can't waltz in and expect people to bend over backwards to suit you that's not how equality works.

I've never known any game environment irl or online where gamers don't trade insults in a friendly manner.

I play wow and half my guilds female they happily trade banter with the guys, that's not just UK players it's people from norway, Sweden Germany all over europe, we sometimes raid with a German guild and we trade cultural insults and joke about the war.

It's not misogyny by treating a female gamer the same as a male that's egalitarianism at its finest.

None of the women I know want to be treated like a princess they want to be treated like a human being.

Hang on, first you say it's a male thing, then you say women happily join in.

Either way, I must be lucky - none of the people I've ever played minis games with do that. I wouldn't ask them to play again if they did.

I'm a man, by the way.

You will always get blowback and crap when you try to do something good. For example, environmentalists picketing to prevent a solar farm being built near their favourite picnic spot.

The toaster in one of our offices has a sign on it asking people not to tip it on it's side and toast cheese in it. Can you believe people need warning not to do that?

honestly, this could all be resolved if we gave all offended parties the ability to equip auto-thrusters

You must not have been to the Infinity forums. In the hexagonal brightness of the near future, there are only flaming threads on sexual objectification.

Lack of common sense knows no boundaries.

I'm considering making even more tea, can't seem to get enough today.

It only took 9 replies to get thia thread locked down. Way to go...

I'm replying solely because I'm out of upvotes for today.

Euro games (which I'm more experienced with) have literally exploded in the same time.

Jesus! Was anybody hurt?!

And this deserves a freaking upvote if any post ever has.

The best part about all the jokes in this thread is not just the misogyny, but that fact that they're also just very tired, unoriginal and not very good jokes.

Like, it's tiring, if I want to play a game I just want to play the game, not get cheesy jokes or get talked down to just cause I happen to be a woman. And it doesn't help that miniature games are still very commonly seen as a guy thing, that does put people off.

I find it interesting, from a sociological perspective, that your comments have been essentially ignored.

All of this.

political correctness is the autoimmune disease of societal constructs...

Neil Gaiman:

...I thought, "That’s not actually anything to do with 'political correctness'. That’s just treating other people with respect." Which made me oddly happy. I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase "politically correct" wherever we could with "treating other people with respect", and it made me smile.

You should try it. It’s peculiarly enlightening.

I would substitute "courtesy" for "respect", there, but otherwise I endorse this entirely.

I wouldn't say no to being able to fly. :P

I wasn't joking about the dinner part. Creating and flying a list is a lot like creating and following a recipe. If you fly poorly you're toast... just like the garlic bread I burned last night while reading the forum instead of watching it. My gf doesn't understand the fun I have with list building, just like she doesn't understand fantasy football. I'm always looking for ways to relate it to things she does enjoy. Until I win that battle I'll have to continue to create her lists for her.

I think it's a hygiene topic... if more males at the game store showered and applied deodorant regularly, more females might enter the building longer than the duration of their held breath. Sometimes I'm tempted to leave early due to poor ventilation.

Then again, maybe it's a fantasy football topic. Is there a (free to join) forum league?

I had a sammich for lunch though. But I bought it. Turkey & Ham, with Spinach. It was quite tasty. Although, the Diet Coke bottle suggested that I should be sharing it with Jordan, but he wasn't anywhere around. Unless the bottle knew something that I didn't. Very puzzling.

And that's kind of crazy about the cheese in a toaster. I honestly never thought to do that. I prefer a nice pannini press though. I find that the grilled cheese sammiches from that are quite awesome. Perfectly toasted, with little lines on the bread from the press, and the cheese melts just perfectly.

For the purposes of this topic's question, I will say that no, there are not many women who play X-Wing at tournaments. These could be for various reasons, but I suspect it goes back to "wargaming" in general not being an atmosphere or environment that feels welcoming.

As opposed to, say, women (statistically as a group, not individuals of course) simply may not care for war-gaming as a hobby?

Consider hobbies that are historically female centric (and no, I'm not going to mention any - pick one you in your head). Got it? Do you think that somewhere on a message board that female-rich environment is worried and discussing that they have not created an atmosphere or environment that feels welcoming to the under represented male population?

Or do you think they are just doing their hobby as it is?

I know and recognize that sexism exists in society. I certainly have seen it when the loan officer who was approving us for our first home loan demanded my wife write a statement about what her career goals were. When I went to the loan officer's boss, the **** hit the fan.

BTW, the loan officer was female, the boss was male... that IS what you were thinking, RIGHT?

She had a history of treating younger women that way, and its was described to us that she did so because she couldn't afford to buy a house herself, and resented married women. Her treatment of my wife finally got her fired because we were willing to push our complaint (along with her boss).

So yeah, sexism is real, but it isn't always the root of what happens to offend someone. And yes, i know my example above is not sexism, but a way to make my point about assumptions.

Can we just treat people like people, treat them nicely and courteously, and not have to do anything special?

Personally I just think you're looking to be offended.

Seriously, talk about thin skinned and unable to take a joke.

Hmm, what kind of distances did said toaster get while ejecting the breadprojectiles? Did different kinds of bread and/or cheese seemed important? Now I want to try that out...

I had leftover BWW. It was spicy enough to wake me from my mid-week doldrums.

Dunno. The point was stuff (cheese and bits of toast) would drop onto the heating elements and start a fire. I don't know who put the notice there, you'd think anyone working nearby would welcome the chance of an office fire - gets you out of work.

Had a yogurt for a snack and then had some stir fry rice my buddy made before we played a game of X-Wing. Just had an icecream sandwich and we're going to be cooking up a pizza from Costco soon.
