Female players during tournaments?

By IG88E, in X-Wing

Maaaaybe the moderators should just go ahead and delete this thread? Pretty sure OP has her/his answer and online gaming forums aren't exactly known as bastions of tolerance/maturity/general human (and non-human!) decency....

People are terrible.

This is why myself and others have rejected humanity and live our lives as invertebrates.

You spineless coward!

I just told my wife that she should get really good at X-wing and document her experience as a female in a male dominated hobby. She seemed interested in it from a sociological standpoint. Then I said you could answer the question, "Why don't more women participate in miniature gaming?" She immediately replied, "Because they have better things to do with their time and somebody has to watch the kids."

I have probably spent more time watching my kids than my wife has. Probably has more to do with work situation than anything else. I also wash dishes, do laundry, and vacuum. I actually enjoy vacuuming.

Well, that's just sick. Not that you do housework, that's great, who the hell likes vacuuming?!

I bought a robot to do that for my wife and I. I'm sure I'll continue to love the little bugger until the day it rises up and murders me.

X-wing doesn't have the hyper-sexual art of women that other male dominated games have. I would think that it would be a great entry point for women interested in miniatures.

That's pretty offensive to assume women don't like "hyper-sexual" art of women.

Most of the women I've known really dig the hyper sexualized, gender stereotypical, blah blah blah media.

Personally, I've encountered one female at the Tacoma Reqional. My local group has no female players, though there are women who come by the store for other games.

And this is fine. You can't force people to like something. Unless we want to make up roving bands of nerds dragging women into game clubs and pushing dice into their hands. I'm pretty sure that's assault. ;)

You probably don't see a lot of women because there are some weird people in the comic shops. I play with miniatures and my fiancé, while tolerant, doesn't seem to share that interest. Nobody wants to go into a comic shop and ogled by a basement dweller when you just want to read Deadpool comics.

I suppose it helps that most x-wing players are older and have discovered what soap shampoo and deodorant are for.

And that's the difference between xwing players and magic players

Nerdy pursits, by their very nature, are going to attract some socially awkward types, for sure. Most of the gamers I've known actually do shower, have social lives, and don't follow the "basement dweller" stereotype.

The one creepy guy seems to set the stereotype though.

One would say, Imperial Assault.

:D

Probably because every shop has "the one creepy guy".

Now, that said, we have a handful of female gamers locally.

I wouldn't go reading too much into these numbers. Bear in mind that as a society we still chafe against stupid BS like Target removing gender-specific categories for children's toys.

I don't think the lower proportion of female players has anything to do with biology or even natural tendency so much as gender role social programming.

Boys play war, or so we were told as wee sprats.

Give it a few years, and this will be seen as the laughable anachronism it is.

Maaaaybe the moderators should just go ahead and delete this thread?

Maybe someone should post a link or photo of the leaked product, that will get the thread yanked down!

In all sincerity, please don't do it. I was just joking

There are threads that should have been yanked down that are still up as of this moment.

Vacuuming and loading the dishwasher (i.e. getting the wife drunk, I kid, I kid...) lets me get out some of my OCD tendencies. I thought about getting a robot to vacuum, but I have concerns about how it would handle all the stuff my kids leave lying about (and that they get yelled at for). I don't want to spend $400 on something that will just break. How does yours work for you?

How do you know that 30% of the men aren't self-identifying as women?

I Identify as a sea-slug, personally. I wish there was more sea-slug representation at local tournaments, but Star Wars miniature games aren't very popular in the sea-slug community.

Ho ho ho, trans* people are inherently funny and you are awesome for mocking a group that by and large are treated pretty shabbily by society.

Was that the sort of reaction you were aiming for?

He was being serious. Why do you automatically assume he's kidding? He's not lesser than you because him and his group don't fit in your predefined gender roles

I, Xyself, personally identify as Star Destroyer-kin, and appreciate you sticking up for those whose voice gets drowned out by the majority... It's not a choice to share a spirit with a Star Destroyer, it's just a part of me... Many people simply can not accept that...

I haven't seen any tigers, mollusks or zebras at tournaments though - clearly we don't treat all life forms as equals

There aren't more women in X-wing because there aren't more women in X-wing. Without females playing, females don't see the hobby as welcoming. I'll leave the solution to that conundrum to the reader.

Seriously, though - my wife's hobbies are quilting and dog agility, which are overwhelmingly female hobbies. Why? Dunno.

As to the attractiveness of X-wing to the mollusk population, one can only speculate.

My wife really enjoys playing and is actually really good. She regularly outplays me although we're both still learning at this point. She's expressed some mild interest in tournament play, but she regularly gets treated poorly at gaming stores and conventions (guys awkwardly hit on her, follow her around, etc) like GenCon so she's highly reluctant to participate. Too bad really.

Wheeeeeee!

I've tried to ask, but they clam up. Perhaps it's that they don't want to mussel in, or maybe they can't shell out that kind of dough.

LOL

There are 0 in my local tournaments.

My girlfriend is very into board games and also likes video games. She will play X-Wing with me very occasionally but just doesn't see it, or any other miniature game, as fun. Even though she really loves some pretty heavy euro board games.

Most of my female friends also love board games. But they wouldn't ever play a miniatures game, even though their husbands/boyfriends do. This isn't about basement dwellers either... this is in the privacy of their own home, with their partner.

I don't know what turns off girls from miniatures games. But something definitely does.

(guys awkwardly hit on her, follow her around, etc)

Is it only ok to hit on her if they don't do it awkwardly? Are they really following or do you just assume they're following if they are going the same way through the convention? I want to know the etc, but I don't. :P

People really love threads like these for some reason. I think I should refrain from further commenting here.

Euro games (which I'm more experienced with) have literally exploded in the same time.

Jesus! Was anybody hurt?!

Here in Italy there are at least 3 grown women regularly hitting the tournament scene.

We're the cradle of Renaissance :D

I have played as Empire and my wife has played as Rebels since the game started. But now my wife is playing Scum and I occasionally play as Rebel.

It seems we are a trans-faction couple.

We have 2-3 women who play occasionally in private atmosphere (without happy ending...no just joking). But I don´t think they would ever participate in a local tournament. Why? I don´t know. Maybe they think it´s not ladylike to play with miniatures? It´s (yet) not socially acceptable? Basically, chess is also a miniatures game, but socially very accepted. I think if you see X-wing miniatures in normal movie scenes or some stars or politicians playing it (for relaxing or brain training ;) ), than it would be more and more acceptable.
