Blue objectives?

By Ophion, in Star Wars: Armada

Just wondering which blue (navigation) objectives people would most favour for an Imperial list

(working on the assumption the rebels will have an advantage in ship numbers and speed).

My thoughts

- Dangerous territory - good because it potentially forces light ships like corvettes to take damage that they can't easily repair, and favours the owning player by letting them ignore terrain damage and still gain the benefits of cover. Worth points that can increase MOV.

- Superior Positions - good because it allows you to offset the rebel ship count advantage and deploy in an optimum way. A risk if they have the speed to get shots on your rear arc. Worth points if you can get rear arc shots, improving MOV.

- Mine fields - Probably most comparable to dangerous territory - good because it potentially lets you cause direct damage, and you can combine it with your deployment for optimum effect (if you get your plan right). Less good because it can damage you (unlike dangerous territory) and doesn't provide any points.

- Intel sweep - A risk, because it is all or nothing, and the rebels potentially have the speed to steal it, but used well can lure them in to over extend and allow some easy kills.

My current thinking is Dangerous Terrain is probably my favourite, as it gives you points, assists your ships, and compels the enemy to take damage. Thoughts?

It depends on what kind of list you are running.

- Dangerous Territory - This is a fairly good objective for your fleet. I would probably recommend running a few Gladiators to race around the map a bit.

-Superior Positions - I really like this objective if I'm running a bomber list with VSD's. Bombers can attack the rear arcs of enemy ships, and the Vics won't be outmaneuvered as easily due to placement.

-Minefields - Again, great for a VSD - heavy list as you have the potential to funnel the enemy in your direction.

-Intel Sweep - I wouldn't choose this objective unless I had a Gladiator - heavy list, It's great then. You can race CR90s to the objectives and then throw black dice at their faces.

My rule of thumb is this:

VSD spam --> Minefields

GSD spam --> Dangerous Territory

Rhymerball --> Superior Positions

Mixed lists might go one way or the other depending on the ship balance and specific upgrades (Superior Positions goes very well with Insidious, for example), but that's my usual approach.

I'm not sure I'd ever want to take my chances on Intel Sweep as an Imperial, but I'm very risk-averse.

After I used Minefields to obliterate a GSD and damage a VSD by the end of turn 2, I find it hard to resist its charms for future games.
