If Episode 7 sucks, how would that affect the popularity of X-wing miniatures?

Fans are often the people who do the worst with things they like. I mean, have you ever taken a glance at fanfiction.net?I'll say that Star Trek was utterly awful (although that was on the writers primarily, and we have Kasdan here), but I've been watching random Abrams things recently to see if he's any good outside of franchises he doesn't care for, and the results are iffy.

Star Wars fans are the worse fans in the universe. Everything breaks the fan base, every new work or media project is polarizing. Nothing ever satisfies. But then Star Wars itself is too big to just have one person's vision dictate the quality, and often times the multitude of product will feature some 'less than stellar' stuff.

Still it's hard to name a franchise that has fans who berate new major installments (movies for films series, books for Harry Potter/ASoIaF) quite like SW, where the mere mention of a new movie or series of movies will be met with pure skepticism and also treated as the second coming by others. We should be overjoyed at the prospect of not only a new movie with the original cast, but two entirely new series of films, one dedicated to telling side stories set during the most popular time period of the original films. But SW fans suck, and they suck hard. They can't even decide whether some little plastic model space ships are worth playing with based on the imagined cost of one or two extra points relative to 100 point lists. Nothing is perfect, everything has ruined my childhood forever. There was an article several years ago that said it best: SW fans love the concept of SW, but hate the execution of that idea.

I really hope this new movie doesn't suck!

Hateful old men living in the 80's... nobody cares what you think anymore.

;)

80's? There was no Star Trek in the 80s

Oh Star Wars, well you can thank the 90's for folks not wanting to leave 1983. ;)

yes I think the future of x-wing is very safe.... its booming at the moment and episode 7 will only help. My biggest problem is that its slowly becoming to complicated for new players because of all the new card combinations

Which is why I'm so in favor of this new Core Set.

It'll be an entry point for a lot of people that maybe don't want to bother with the old stuff, and Episode VII will have a full cast of starships to choose from- mark my words.

I suspect Wave 8 will be the last or next to last wave of base XWMG stuff. Everything after that could very likely be TFA-forward.

YUP... just like how so may people got on board with Most Wanted. SCUM has been in STAR WARS from day one movie one... way back when.

:)

The day they make Jar Jar Binks a pilot or crew member is the day I stop playing.

That's kind of the funny thing I've noticed about X-Wing. I know a few players of it personally, with rather impressive collections in fact...that aren't fans of Star Wars at all. They just like the game and the ships. X-Wing has so much going for it, even outside of the whole Star Wars story. A strong system, great models - pre-painted great models even...a strong support crew, a great producer and well known in several circles of gaming, plus its easy to get into and doesn't take much time to play a match or six. No special terrain needed (though a decent star field is always catchy), and not even a lot of space to play, unlike many other miniature games out there.

So all in all, it wouldn't even matter if Episode 7 was the next Fantastic Four (1992, 2004, or even 2015 versions)..people will still support the game to scoot mini star ships across a table top and go pew pew at each other while tossing some dice for years to come.

I think that if TFA is terrible the only impact to X-Wing will be a minimal influx of new players/curious onlookers.

Should the film be representative of the ideal (which, let's face it, is why we're all hooked on our little plastic toys), then FFG will (in the short term) make a killing generated from new & renewed interest in all things Star Wars.

Long term there is likely to be frustrations for the new players as they struggle to find the upgrades and ships they need from early waves. Especially in the overseas (read: NOT US) markets.

Either way FFG stands to gain from it, but the proof is in the pudding as the saying goes and product sales will tell all in the end.

Just my two cents/bob.

I think even if TFA is rubs (which I doubt) the X-wing with the Talon Roll will still be sweet.

If FFG made prequel starter and expansions I'd get the ships I liked, ignore the ones I didn't like, and not even think about the movies.

But what will you do when FFG includes the perfect card for a ship you like with a ships you don't like?

Print it out.

Or do what I do and just write a list. I never needed cards for my upgrades when I played War hammer.

Well with Warhammer, they make a new codex every other year.

And in each new codex, every old existing model gets a nerf or point cost increase. And every new model is super powerful and mandatory if you want to win.

That's how they keep selling their overpriced stuff.

In contrast, I like how new upgrades for X-wing come out every now and then and super charge some older ships that hadn't been used in a while. I'm prepared to be optimistic, since the game hasn't really steered me wrong yet. Then again, I don't buy 100 points worth of every new ship. I mostly just play Imperial, I buy one ship at a time, and if I like it I buy a 2nd. I suppose if you buy 3 or 4 of every large or small ship on release you'd burn out pretty quick.

Except Scum and Villainy, bought/preordered several all last week. Including 3 M3-A Scyks right off the bat since I figured they were Tie-fighter like, and I really liked the models.

We could ask the same question about rebels, to people who don't like it currently. I'm not a big fan and it doesn't bother me too much that they are bringing out ships from that series, mostly because they look decent!

Not a huge fan of them bringing out tfa ships and mixing with the current ones :/

There's a huge chance it will suck. But I don't think it's going to. I'm not an optimistic person normally, and I hate that stupid lightsaber, but I just can't see how Han Flying the falcon again is not going to be great.

See that right there is you setting yourself up for disappointment when the film you imagine in your head isn't the film you get.

I'm going in with zero expectations if it's good i'll admit my fear was unfounded but if it sucks it'll be because he made a bad film and my Sig will be "I told you so".

I don't get hyped for any film from trailers I get excited from good reviews from critics I share a taste in film with.

I'm extremely cautious towards the new movie. I'm positive it won't be what I want. Mostly because I'm a huge EU fan. But I've accepted that I'm SOL about getting more Legends material. So I'll go see the movie with hopeful an open mind. But I hated what JJ did to Star Trek. So I could see him making an action movie that tries to jam in to many Easter eggs but has a terrible plot. Oh yeah.........lens flare!

There have been countless flaws that hardcore Star Wars fans routinely pay no mind amidst their love of the franchise.

Even the Star Wars films that have truly awful elements have other fantastic things going for them. I am not expecting perfection with the new Disney Star Wars films but we have also seen enough images and clips to feel confident that the new films will again offer something special to this franchise.

Regardless of how the new films turn out (and I'm honestly not worried) this game will be fine. X-Wing didn't become a highly rated tabletop game simply because it is Star Wars. It's a great design and has always maintained some degree of balance even if the current meta needs stirring (shaking?).

The mere fact that BB-8 is a practical effect shows a level of care and attention to detail far above that of most movies. Episode 7 is in good hands.

Even if it's not OT tier, after the prequels you can only go up.

Even though Episodes 1-3 weren't as good as the OT, mostly because Vader was spoiled, they were still hugely entertaining. Binks, needed as a Dupe to recommend emergency powers for Palpatine, was awful, granted. As long as Ep 7 is not as bad Aliens 3 or Resurrection we'll be alright. As far as the game goes it's strong enough to survive an E7 so bad that they cancel the remaining two sequels.

I believe X-wing is safe. Ep 7 would really have to be a misunderstanding of the level of lets say "Starship Troopers 2" to influence the sales.

You could have just typed "starship troopers 2" and I still would have laughed.

I don't get it... Why are people still hung up on that, 15 years later?
