Torpedoes vs. Missiles

By Final Draft, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Hello~

So, this is a question I've been wondering about, just as a discussion that might be interesting.

X-wing has two different ranged weapon one-offs, torpedoes and missiles, and I'm wondering what is the difference between these two armament classes.

In real life, missiles are guided rockets that can track and home in on their targets with the guidance of GPS. Missiles are typically associated with aircraft, surface ships, and some ground vehicles. Torpedoes, on the other hand, are more associated with submarines; guided munitions that are almost like missiles, but swim their way through water to get to their targets.

So, what would the difference be between missiles and torpedoes in the Star Wars universe? They both explode, relatively speaking, they both track their targets (except for a couple, though that is the exception rather than the rule) as most require target locks to be fired. So what's the difference in your own opinion?

The only real difference I can tell after browsing Wookieepedia is that proton torpedoes were typically shielded to prevent being shot down and that they could make fast sharp turns in pursuit of their target.

From the old x-wing/tie fighter flight sim games, missiles could hit a tie fighter, torpedoes could not.

Missiles were for shooting fighters

Torpedoes were for shooting capital ships

Most the time torpedoes tend to be more powerful than missiles, but proton "Rockets" trump torpedoes. In universe maybe the weapons designer's didn't want to go the same rout LASER designers when it comes to labeling their weapons by class.

In think proton rockets are supposed to be like the heavy rockets from the pc games.

In the games they were pretty powerful, but slower than torpedoes and missiles. They were almost useless against other starfighters...unless you shot them at point blank range.

Hence why proton rockets hit hard but are range 1 only. Also hit harder with higher agility ships as they are usually "faster" so the rockets would be easier to shoot off quickly.

I hadn't thought of that but yeah that makes sense.

I think its pretty well made rules wise.

Torpedos are usually heavy hitters with not much green-die-mitigation (i mean they modify reds but target can still avoid them with good evade) but when they hit they hit like freightrain.

Rockets usually hits for less but can assure more hit ratio per salvo, make defender roll less or beeing able to be modified more.

Just like OP said they should.

Really missiles should get a bonus against fighters and a penalty against epic ships, and vice versa for torps.
