Higher squad points?

By dewbie420, in X-Wing

I think this game needs a 20 point boost in squad cost for standard tournaments. I want to recreate a few cinematic squads but I always come up with 110-115 points. And recently I played in an escalation tournament- I really enjoyed Round 3. I had more fun... and more attack dice too.

I'm sure there are good reasons why 100 points is ideal, but I can't think of any.

(I searched for a thread with this topic, but didnt see much)

Time constraints are probably the biggest issue.

That is a good reason. **** clocks!

3 arguments against your suggestion which occur to me:

1.

Many given point costs are related to the 100 point cost. For example, in order to never run 3 IG-88s or 3 scum Firesprays etc, They could get too strong when not restricted.

2.

Additionally, I think 100 points is right because, as example, usually in normal more-ship-squads both side loose one ship after the first joust. If you increase the squad points then both sides would probably loose two ships after the first encounter. Having same amount of ships for the second round like in the 100 point version. Try it out and play 1000 points vs 1000 points. Both sides will loose the first 900 points in the first encounter. Then you came back to your normal dogfight (Assault missiles not concerned in this illustration)

3.

If in a parallel universe classic X-wing squads would have 120 points, someone like you would create a thread there and ask why not boosting to 140 points? ;)

Thanks! the time thing alone sold me. I'll just appreciate Round 3 in Escalation, more.

"this thread is dead"

I'd be keen to test it out, maybe run a 150 point tournament sometime. if its horrible we'll never do it again, but I think it will be fun.

I might ban IG-88s though.

Just had a local 150 point tournament with a great turnout. Fun was had by all. TO blocked triple IG triple turret by placing the rule that you could not spend more than 100 points on a single type of ship.

Had a really varied line up as a result.

I'm not sure we need a more squad points but I do wonder with the new core set if a point bump may happen with relation to that?

The time thing is actually pretty inconsequential with minimum 75 minute rounds. The vast majority of games finish well before time.

As far as triple IG and triple Mando's, what exactly is broken about them? 3xIG is 108 points leaving you 12 points. It is doable, but they are very stripped down. This would be a far more interesting match up than facing 2 all the time. 3xMando is 105 leaving 15 points, so Predator/Tactician maybe. Fun but hardly broken.

It actually promotes a bit more diversity as it breaks the molds of what is playable. Sure it opens up the possible of 2 fats ships, but with extra guns on the table, they actually become more of a liability. Most lists would have the possibility of chucking in a couple extra warm bodies to swarm with, or alternatively buff up the bodies they have to produce faster and more consistent damage. You would have viable lists at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and potentially 9 ships.

For what it is worth, I have been a proponent of playing (2D6 + 3) x 100 to break the monotony. That gives you a game anywhere between 50 points and 150 pts, obviously with the average of 100 pts as standard. Doesn't really work for tournaments but is certainly fun in casual games.

More ships usually means ships dying faster. 150 is not 150% of the length of 100.

With a new core set 2 new sub-factions and new damage decks there is going to be some changes. I wouldn't be surprised if the point cap is raised also.

Yeah as was mentioned Time constraints are a problem particularly when your LGS kicks you out at 8 P.M. but of course it stays open tell like midnight for "Magic" nights...

We can't have 120 because that would make non meta ships viable.

You are supposed to throw Defenders and E-wings into the garbage bin after you take the upgrade cards out of the pack.

Heaven forbid a tournament takes more than 90 minutes of opponents delaying for time after getting a single kill.

Why do you think the new unique pilots have such characterful names like "Blue Ace?" You aren't supposed to use Star WarsTM characters in your games, use the cheap generics or don't show up.
