X-wing: My journey begins

I bought the core set in late June 2015 for my son as a reward for a good report card from school. We got home and began playing immediately. That is all it took, just one game, FFG had me in their tractor beam. To the dismay of my son his X-wing game has been confiscated by his dad. I began buying expansions, and now have a pretty good fleet, and started playing at my local gaming store. I began to scour the internet for videos and guides to squad building. My purchasing of expansions was sporadic and I bought Rebel(my preference) and Empire. So my squad building was limited, but that did not deter me from enjoying this game that I love to play.

With my limited ships that did not stop me from entering in the Regional Tournament at Madness Comics in Plano,Tx. I had no idea what was in store for me. So I entered the tournament with a variant of panic attack, without going in to details, I burrowed some cards and ships from my nephew who flies Scum & Villainy. This regional was the largest regional in the world. 115 players, it was Madness! I ended up going 1-5. A lot of the veteran players assured me that is a good record for being in my 1st tournament, and being in a tournament of this size, with a lot of great players. The X-wing community is one of the most cooperative communities. Each player that I played against gave me advice on what I did wrong and what I should have done differently.

I went to my 2nd tournament over the weekend at Sci-Fi factory in Lake Worth, Tx. I went with a Imperial build, and went 1-3. The staff and players were all great, a couple of them I've seen before at other events, but never formally introduced. So it was good to be at a smaller venue and get to know some of the players in my area. Also received some alt art recon specialist cards, so that’s pretty cool.

So, with all this being said, am I making a mistake with playing Rebel & Empire factions? Should I stick with Rebel which I really enjoy flying? Empire has some really cool looking ships. I believe I can be a much better player and the correspondence in this community is a fantastic tool. Let me know what ya'll think.
