Solo Play and an Imbalance in the Force

By dwaynedauzat, in Imperial Assault Campaign

In the campaign, I feel that the Imperial player is overpowered and that the game is hard on the heroes. I know that there are other threads which discuss this issue, but I've not read anything from the perspective of solo play testing. By that, I mean that I play the game alone, as both the Imperial and hero players. I consider this to be a better way to play test the campaign as it eliminates the difference in skill level among the players. I play both sides fairly. I do the best that I can when playing as each player. When playing as a hero I play as though I am unaware of any of the hidden information in the campaign guide. I play as though I am unaware of what the “other” player's next move will be and I make the best moves that I would normally make. Some may consider this to be a bit schizophrenic.

I've played the campaign twice, once with only two heroes using the Legendary reward and once with 4 heroes. Both games resulted in an easy Imperial victory. My first play through was with Gaarkhan, Jyn and Military Might. My second was with Gideon, Diala, Mak, Gaarkhan and Technological Superiority.

I wish for the heroes to win, but I play fairly that either side may win and the Imperials always seem to have the upper hand. For most of the missions the ultimate goal is not always clearly revealed until later in the game and I feel like the heroes have very little room for error. Either they run out of time, trying to kill off Imperial figures to make the objective easier. Or, they rush the objective, ignoring the mass of Imperial figures, then become overwhelmed and are easily wounded. What gives?!

Hero victories are rare with me. I'm wondering if anyone else plays solo as I do. If so, what are your results and what tips or strategies might you recommend?

I have played four campaigns solo (one still has a mission to go) and the empire has 10 victories (one of which was due to a major rules mistake). I think the quoted line is your problem, you need to find a happy medium: kill stuff that's going to do too much damage to you, leave stuff that's not and keep moving towards your objective (of course if the Rebels are doing well then after a few wins then they'll have the firepower that they can actually do both but it's still the best strategy if they don't get to this point). If you know the objective in advance then work out how many actions you need to accomplish that, give yourself some margin for error and use the rest to kill stuff. I'd give more advice but it's hard when I can't see your play.

I used to play games solo, but I had my wife make me babies 9 and 7 years ago so they can play board games with me now.

My wife and I have not yet been able to make children, so we are fostering a couple now. Aside from raising them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, I hope to one day be able to play board games with them.

I do try to achieve this, but I suppose I've just not found that happy medium yet. At the beginning of some missions it seems like the heroes are doing well then it suddenly turns for the worse. In my second play through of the campaign the heroes won a little under half of the missions. I thought this would give them enough upgrades and supplies to win the final mission but it just didn't work out.
