Start now or hold off?

By Nez21, in X-Wing

Hey guys.

I've been looking into getting into X-Wing for quite some time. I already own a copy of the starter set in fact.

I'm just curious as to whether I should plunge further into the game now, as I'm worried that when the new film is released, some of the stuff I own/purchase may become obsolete, if there's a new edition or a bunch of new releases.

I was planning to buy a second starter, an X wing expansion, and a Tie Fighter expansion, when I get paid, but I'm unsure if I should, or should I hold out until next year?

Thanks guys!
Nez

From all the rumors, just hold out until September 4th, then you will know about compatibility.

Unless you want a swarm of TIEs, hold off on the second starter set.

I would say go ahead and get the X-Wing expansion and the TIE Fighter expansion, but hold off on the second core set until September 4th when everything gets announced. It is *extremely* unlikely that the new stuff will be incompatible or make any of the old stuff obsolete, but you probably don't want to end up with 3 Core Sets if the new stuff includes a new Core Set as we expect.

If you already have a Core set. I'd hold off too.

Wait a week see what happens.

Wait 2 weeks.

Why on earth would you NOT want to start now & get as many games in as is humanly possible?!

wait until sept 4. make a decision then

I'd wait

I would wait and see what's coming out for the game regarding episode vii. However, I do believe the new core set will be compatible with the old. If it isn't, FFG will be making a mistake of Games Workshop preportions.

I'm relatively new too.

No interest in Episode VII models (except Falcon) but I'm still waiting to see if I change my mind on 4th September.

Hasn't stopped me starting my collection of ships though.

Just holding off on the second starter in case the new toys are too hard to resist.

I'm just curious as to whether I should plunge further into the game now...

Yes, you should.

I wouldn't worry about this. X-wing has, on the whole, done a very good job of holding power creep down. X-wings are not particularly competitive (in that the lists that place well at national tournament events rarely feature X-wings), but they're still fun to play. And TIE fighters are still nasty little predators, and that's unlikely to change.

Two starters used to be the standard advice, but these days I think it's probably a better idea for players to stick to just one unless you're sure you want to run a "TIE swarm", which most people define as 7-8 TIE fighters in a single list.

start now! start as if you life depended on it!!!!

Unless you want a swarm of TIEs, hold off on the second starter set.

or even better, wait till december next year for the third core set

Hold off until the new core set launches on september 4th.

I would wait and see what happens on the 4th, and make a decision whether or not you want to collect the OT series or the stuff for the new film. However that decision would only be a problem if the new film stuff isn't compatible with the old.

I'm hoping to start my collection around that time as well, get the new starter, and hopefully they release the SF red marked Tie or black X wing shortly after and i'll slowly build up. I love the original trilogy designs as well, but the new stuff is really cool and is just gonna hype me for the new film.

Depending on what happens with this new release I would wait, though two standard cores never hurts especially if you love the OT stuff as most of us do.

I think a lot of people will wait until the 4th - and then decide - wow , I want this stuff - so get what you can now, before people who have never heard of the game go into target on starwars day and are blown away and seek out other stuff for the game.

Your old stuff is not likely to be "obsoleted" as in - rendered incompatible - they've announced the next wave and the Gozanti - and as a company - (and the designers in specific) have a vision of all the pieces being usable and good. So even if future releases make older ships look less attractive - they'll bump up the power of those less attractive ships (see tie advanced)

If you like the game - there's no reason to wait. - I think however, the new core will make two of the base core set not the best idea - I envision one of each core as a good path to getting the dice you need - and a wider variety of stuff - since you wont have duplicate pilots.

Yeah, hold off on the second OT core. Unless something drastic comes out for the old T-65 X-Wing, you won't need more than one of each pilot in that set. A classic TIE swarm may still be viable, but it'll be cheaper to buy the individual expansions of that ship than to rely on extra core sets.

The individual expansions should still be great, especially the TIE Fighter expansion. Swarm Tactics, Howlrunner, Backstabber... that pack was just gold and remains a mainstay for a lot of lists. Unless FFG implements a policy of retiring older ships, everything in that pack should still be amazing.

I don't see FFG doing anything silly or drastic like making the OT core set obsolete, my guess is that any changes we see after 9/4 would be largely cosmetic with the addition of new ships/pilots to tempt existing players to splurge. They want as many happy, loyal customers as possible (and seem to be doing good at that) so them making some kind of crazy change that invalidates previous investments is extremely unlikely.

Wait a week and see but don't worry that it'll be obsolete

In ffg we trust.

Keep

Calm

And

Let

Ffg

Carry on.

No reason to wait unless you want the new ships and are on a budget. If the new core set increases demand, as others have mentioned, you may end up finding that ships you decide you want aren't as easy to find.

Take your wallet and RUN!!! As long as you can!

It depends on what you want.

Do you want a solid game? then get in now

Do you want to jump in on the new film hype train then get in now and get that stuff later
