what about if I have a squadron half on an obstacle and my opponent draws line of fire to the side not on the obstacle? It of my understanding that it would not be obstructed. Is that correct

That's correct. But line of sight must traced between the points of the bases closest to each other. It's not enough for the attacker to see a bit of the defender's base somewhere.

(i.e. O---O, not O__O)

Los for fighters is from the center post of the base not the base its self and LoS for ships is from the yellow dots.

closed base to closed base is used for range only

No its from the tip of the base to the tip of the base/hull zone. Not the post.

Am I correct in thinking that an obstructed fighter target is attacked with one less dice - even by other fighters?
no because fighters are not ships or obstacles (debris/asteroid markers) in the game.

I think you misread the question :)

A fighter attacking another fighter could have its line of sight obstructed by a ship or obstacle, in which case it would roll one less die.

yea I did

Line of sight from ships are done from the yellow dots it is the only thing the yellow dots are used for Its their point for working out Line of sight and the center post on the round fighter base is on the same line with its close edge. The tip of the base to the tip of the base/hull zone.is for weapon and or control range ONLY not for Line of shght

From page 7 of the Rules Reference, 2nd bullet point under LINE OF SIGHT:

When tracing line of sight to or from a squadron, trace the line using the point of the squadron’s base that is closest to the opposing squadron or hull zone.

You can measure the LoS line from center post to center post, it will give you the closest points between the 2 squadrons, but you only use the base to base portion of said line.

So he was kind of correct.

the center post on the round fighter base is on the same line with its close edge.

This is actually a very important point for measuring LOS, especially if you are using a laser level or something of the sort to check LOS.

Because of geometry, the line for the closest point between two squadron bases does in fact run through the center post of both the minis.
