A new take on Deci-Vader

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Right! These thingers.

Firstly, this will be a Decimator with Vader flanker.

No, it will not be a copy of Sablegryphons, much as I love the combo he included in his.

I still would love to hear what y'all think of it, though.

Darth Vader

+ Lone Wolf

+ TIE/x1 Title

+ Advanced Targeting Computer

+ Stealth Device

Commander Kenkirk

+ Veteran's Instincts

+ Emperor Palpatine

+ Ysanne Isard

+ Engine Upgrades

+ Extra Munitions

+ Seismic Charges

A 35/65 split, for those keeping track at home.

And yes, I know there are some unexpected choices in this fleet, but I'll be happy to talk about them when asked :)

I understand why you went for the Seismic Charges + Extra Munitions, but I can't help but think Vader needs the EU more.

so whats sable's build? if just for comparisons sake?

^this.

Ability to dodge arc gonna give you more potential than this additional dice. Since Vader got 2 actions anyway, you can either dodge with BR and boost or if its impossible just go for focus/evade. You can even pull boost to dodge then focus to attack.

Bomb could pay itself off but its 5 points in a pretty point-tight list. I would rather go with predator on kenkirk. With VI you got 8ps thats not gonna give you anything, cause most aces got 9ps and those with 8 gonna win the initiative bid cause you got 100pts in the list.

1.) Looks great.

2.) Shame on you for Turretwing. Shame. Go smear an ice cream bar on your face some place else. Shame. SHAME.

I have a similar list to test

Maarek Stele
TIE Advanced
Push theLimit
Engine Upgrade
Advanced Targeting Computer
Commander Kenkirk
VT-49 Decimator
Push the Limit
Seismic Charges
Emperor Palpatine
Ysanne Isard
Engine Upgrade

I'd be very tempted to take Determination over VI on Kenkirk, simply because of all that Hull, and you don't want to lose his ability with Sheev on board.

Good call that is a great combo I forgot about

Seismics + EM didn't knock out the Engine Upgrades: Stealth Device did.

And yes, I prefer SD on Vader to EU, as the latter leaves Vader too vulnerable to turrets, and he can still arc-dodge like a boss with just Barrel-Roll.

Besides, Vader without EU is still more mobile than Fel, as you have a much larger dial to work with in the first place (as Fel is restricted to his Green maneuvers), so you're far less vulnerable to blocking.

VI jumps me ahead of Brobots, but I hadn't considered this one. I like it!

Predator has synergy with Chiraneau, but Kenkirk's offense is still pretty good without it, as he's got no defensive actions to take when not Boosting.

The bombs are there to dissuade the Swarm.

This took 1st place on this past weekend at a tournament I was at with a total of 20 players from various areas.

Commander Kenkirk (44)
Predator (3)
Emperor Palpatine (8)
Ysanne Isard (4)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Darth Vader (29)
Predator (3)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
TIE/x1 (0)
Total: 100
Was really effective with the only build giving it any real trouble being Brobots ironically.

no mass TLT Lists? I imagine they would give this list a lot of trouble.

Vader is going to get hit with or without SD against Turrets. It's the Autothruster SD combo that makes Interceptors viable against Turrets. I do see the appeal of SD if you're running an Emperor crew though.

As for arc-dodging like a boss, I don't agree. Without EU, Vader is no better at arc dodging than Howlrunner or Corran and significantly inferior to a Soontir. Your initial dial might be less predictable, yes.

I prefer barrel-roll to boost for arc dodging. It's great to have both as an option but I don't think it's always worth 4 points and giving up your modification slot to get that option.

There was no lists with Twin Laser Turrets this weekend but wave 7 is also not available yet. Heavy guard was top after four rounds of Swiss and finished in first with some awesome extra prizes courtesy of the great store staff.

I've played three league matches against TLTs with Vader taking 36 red dice against, and by turtling and Palping he only lost one shield in all. TLTs aren't the end all be all against 3+ green die ships, especially when using the force.

Two or less die ships, now they are going to have a real problem taking 2 hits a turn.

Absolutely agreed.

Barrel-Roll on its own will do the trick the vast majority of the time.

Boost + Barrel-Roll can save you if you've completely failed to consider the opponent's possible maneuvers before selecting yours, or if you have a restricted dial (like, say, only being able to perform Greens).

Yeah, barrel roll works great by itself until you face an opponent who DOESN'T completely fail to consider his opponent's (your) possible maneuvers before selecting theirs :P

Seriously though, boost is not just for arc-dodging. Its great for a lot of reasons. That said, I know a number of players that feel its not worth the 4 points and they prefer something like stealth/shield/hull on Vader instead. So its kind of silly to say there is only one good way to play Vader. For myself, I love how boost gives me more options, but I can see how other people can play Vader differently ;)

The build isnt mine. I ended up in 3rd with a different build. Also TLT is not yet tournament legal as it has yet to be officially released.

My mistake don't know everyone's forum handles

So my comments are primarily for newer pilots, because I'm still a noob myself but most of my tournament play or serious playtesting has been with the Decimator + Soontir/Vader model. Those with greater skill will probably not find much of interest in the following but I'm here to learn, so I assume there are others reading in the same position.

My experience has been that boost + barrel roll will DEFINITELY save your bacon as a more novice player trying to fly a ship that rewards expert flying and punishes bonehead maneuvering. Stealth Device, too. At first I really scratched my head at the Vader builds without EU, or the Soontir builds without SD, because both have done serious work for me when I left my ship exposed. It took a strong dose of humility to realize that those builds were for pilots that are strictly better than I am, and could sacrifice a get-out-of-free card in favor of more consistent damage output or more survivability against turrets. So I can totally see why OP's build might be strictly superior in the hands of an expert pilot....but I'm just not good enough to fly it! Give me a turtled-up Soontir all day long and I'll STILL be using my Palpatinian rerolls for defense.
