Ordered EotE but before it arrives......

By Xander Krane, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

It's a case of playing "space" with X-Wing or Armada, while playing "boots on the ground" with RPG. Though Imperial Assault was a suggestion and, after an unfortunate posting mishap, I was tempted to go that route.

Honestly, this is fine if it works for you guys.

I think a lot of the concern being voiced here is due to the many previous attempts to force these two relatively incompatible systems together.

If it doesn't bug you or your players, and you guys have fun, awesome. Just don't expect to find any conversion rules to apply EotE character information to X-wing information. It doesn't sound like you're looking for that, and you've been well-informed, now, that it'll lead to some loopholes and inconsistencies in the game.

Godspeed and happy rolling.

For dice, if you don't have some already, I recommend getting the app. It has both RPG and X-wing dice and only costs about $5, which is less than half a set of physical dice for the RPG.

Perhaps a different RPG then?

One where characters kickass on planets but aren't required to be ship crews. That leaves Age of Rebellion and Force & Destiny.

The biggest thing is that the RPG line (Age of Rebellion and Force and Destiny are really no different) has a robust, if a bit abstract, ruleset for space combat to the point where some entire talent trees are dedicated to things that can be done while flying a ship (it is more than just having ranks in the piloting skill). These things will not translate easily, if at all, to the X-Wing or Armada rulesets. So the concern people are voicing is that you are eliminating large chunks of the seamless game.

If you guys are alright with that, go for it!

You can easily do that in EotE. Just don’t ever have anything happen in space, and maybe they always take the space-taxi or the space-bus to go wherever.

Three totally different games, with different types of rules, and different mindsets that will enjoy playing the respective games.

It just so happens that they all say “Star Wars” on the box, and they all happen to be from the same company.

Imagine playing Risk for all the geopolitical stuff, Monopoly for all the Stock Market stuff, and Trains Across America for all the transport stuff. And maybe they’re all made by the same company.

Do you know, for a fact, that all your players are equally interested in playing these various games?

In our Thursday night Force & Destiny game, we have some people who enjoy both SWRPG and X-Wing, others who enjoy SWRPG and Magic The Gathering, and then there’s me who enjoys SWRPG but has no interest in any of the other games that anyone else wants to play.

On nights when the SWRPG game gets cancelled late, the other guys can usually find someone there to play with in those other games, but I just go home.

(it is more than just having ranks in the piloting skill)

Thats the thing that takes new people forever to unlearn (myself included) - that any schlubb with 90 experience points can pick up 5 ranks of piloting. Big deal - you have a large pile of yellow dice.

But the talents - it's the talents where all the fun bits of a character lie, where they can really shine and do awesomesauce things. Take all that Cool Things away and you might as well be some schlubb with 90 points.

I play a character that has a 6 intellect, 4 ranks in computers, 3 in mechanics, and 3 in medicine. However, I only have the Slicer and Medic specializations. I roll most mechanic rolls, but I feel at a pretty big disadvantage without any of those sweet Mechanics related talents.

You could play an Episodic Campaign based around a Mercenary Company, where each session is like a new episode of a TV show. One week you play a Party of Comandos breaking in to an enemy base (SWRPG), next your a squadron of fighters taking on some pirates (X-Wing), another week and it's a Cap Ship battle (armada), then you have a Hutt to negotiate with for supplies to the rebellion (SWRPG)

The RPG characters stay the same and level up (although slowly) but the pilots in X-Wing and Armada come and go.

I'm with the others by the way, if you replace any part of the game with another system then the PC's who focus on that miss out so much as to be made obsolete. Either stick with 1 system or rotate through them with no direct interaction.

That was exactly the plan!

But to answer bradknowles question: yes.

Though after reading through the comments everyone feels we'd be better off skipping EotE, except for the Hutts and adversaries, in favour of Force and Destiny. Ships in X-Wing will be the "buses" to ferry the characters around, and the crews will be NPCs.

The upside to this is is that I'm now required to create a Force User PC. No more being a mysterious NPC.

There's even a title: The Council of Seven

The stuff about force powers seem fairly well covered by others.

Not sure if someone else has mentioned it, but something to bear in mind is that EoTE is the more shadier sides of SW, not so black and white when ethical decisions come into play, so beware of the Dark Side! (Especially if your going to be using FaD Morality as well as Obligation).
