Neti species

By jaethe77, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Long story short, I have a long running, off and on, campaign I'm finishing and a new player wants to play a Neti species. This works perfectly with a campaign specific event, the death of a force sensitive Neti but the party has one of her seeds Ala Groot, and I wanted to crowd source ideas for a Neti species.

I'm thinking 1 agility and 3 willpower with a 10+brawn WT and a 12+Willpower ST along with 90 xp and +1 soak or -10 critical to represent bark. Then a skill bonus of some kind. I'm grateful for any constructive criticism. Thanks.

How would you handle their ability to change size? 9.5 meters should mostly certainly be Silhouette 2, and yet they can also be Silhouette 1. That would be a pretty cool ability.

I'm totally unfamiliar with the race (Just read the Wookieepedia entry), so take everything that follows with a a few dozen grains of salt.

I think the stats look reasonable. I like the "-10 to crits", but would simply state "character gets the Durable talent."

I would probably add the photosynthetic metabolism as a character ability. Keep it simple, it sounds like the highlights should be:

  • Character doesn't have to eat.
  • Character requires minimal amounts of water so long as light as available
  • Character must have a reasonable amount of light daily or suffer [a penalty]

No need to be specific about water/light requirements. It looks like Resilience checks are used to deal with starvation/dehydration, so just use those rules when needed.

Anything that has shapeshifting makes me nervous. Although based on the Wookieepedia description, this sounds like you can just say something like "Tree form: Spend a Maneuver and you can be a tree. Spend an additional maneuver to revert to humanoid shape. Bonuses to subject situation and whims of the GM."

Godspeed, let us know how it turns out.

The Neti are one of my all time favorite species in Star Wars. I really hope at some point FFG brings them into the fold.

I was under the impression that once they turned into a tree that was it, they couldn't revert back. Source: Ood Bnar I dont recall Neti reverting shape...

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't remember the talents name for the -10 critical but durable is what I was thinking for that ability. I forgot about photosynthesis and I will add that in the write up. I'm thinking an immunity to poisons as well but then I would drop the xp to 80 instead of 90.

My understanding is that the tree form is an end life cycle type event and is permanent. So I'll be ignoring that ability for the game other than a major narrative decision by the player.

I was under the impression that T'ra Saa had come back from tree form.

Yeah, she went tree form to avoid capture on Kiffex. So there's no real consensus I'm aware of in regards to that ability in canon. Actually, there's no canon anyway with the Disney restructure so I'll just be ignoring that ability for simplicities sake. :)

Very likely, it was a "various authors wrote different stuff" scenario; Timothy Zahn couldn't write ALL of the EU ;) Ood Bnar did it to protect the Jedi relics, so he might've assumed a more shield-like shape, covering them over, and focusing all his Force potential into his "skin", to survive the cataclysm, and then died, anyway, but DID shield the lightsabers, holocrons, and such; lava didn't fry them . Meanwhile, Traa Saa might've benefitted from better straits, and so could. When she did die, she went all tree-like, too, I seem to recall; it's been a while since Legacy was around. It is just as likely that, like a Gen'Dai, the Neti might be able to assume an alternate state, wherein they don't need to eat, sleep, or such, as in to heal, or can survive inclement conditions for a longer period. Being a Jedi would probably only make that even more effective. Also, some races can use their inborn powers differently from all the rest. Dirge has pseudopods most of his race doesn't, and can be blown across a room, mostly unharmed, even though his own fluff describes his immortal people being weaker than Mandalorians, and getting cybernetic enhancements to augment him, even being basically encased in his armor, but he can still heal back to fine, given time.

Some of these, I don't ever expect to see. There's no real reason you can't use them, and the material can be reintroduced, reconfigured, or whatever, if Disney wants (Han and Leia might still have had three children, named Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin, even if their histories are otherwise entirely different; no being the Kwisatz Haderach, fighting a god, and learning every Force tradition, being in Rogue Squadron, and being trainined by Boba Fett and Mandalorians to hunt Jedi, or dying a hero, shortly after making Chewie die a hero in one of the coolest ways he could've). Having said that, I doubt they'll re-litter the material with all that "wait, what can that thing do?" examples that the unwanted housecleaning got rid of. Maybe FFG can, as AoE makes several references to Force Unleashed, and that silly game definitely got "never happened" by the Rebels cartoon happening. We'll just have to wait, and see. The books are rather firmly set in the three main movies time, for now, and they already gave us the Chiss, a race that, when Thrawn was around, he was the only one most people ever knew about, and his race's name was only known to him, and the Emperor. I don't know when someone else actually wrote a book that introduced the Chiss Ascendancy more than "they shot down Outbound Flight", so more of their race was known, to help fight the Vong, but we have them, so maybe they'll give us other cool races.
