Would you change how you purchased XWing???

By Plainsman, in X-Wing

For many of us, we purchased ships as ships came out or have been around for several Waves at least. I got in and bought one or two of everything, then added as needed! It seems to be working.

For those just getting into XWing, there are a LOT of choices for getting into it! So rather than starting another thread on what should they get...I'm asking,

"What would you change, if you could go back in time, if anything, in the way you purchased ships?"

I bought a lot of ships full retail at B&N when I first started. Looking back, I'd have so many more ships right now if I had known about MiniatureMarket back then.

I've been playing since it was released 3 years ago, pretty much buying ships as they comes out. I have found it to be extremely enjoyable. Waves 1-4 almost tell an escalating war story. For those just getting into the game, buy what looks fun. Don't stress about competitiveness. Everything is close enough to play with and have fun with that ship.

I'd have skipped buying an Outrider. I ended up getting it as a Christmas gift, and I'll never fly two.

Otherwise, nah. Once the Gozanti comes out, I'll have my 8 TIE Fighters for an ideal TIE swarm.

I only fly imperial and and S&V. I had bought rebel when I first got into the game but did not like them. So I would not have bought rebel ships if I had it to do over.

Unless your a completionist and need one of everything (or more) then do research on what you want. Fly your friends ships and get a feel for your style. Then go buy those ships and (depending on groups rules about proxy) buy the ships that have the upgrades you want.

As for how I have done it One of everything extras of those I like to fly in groups. What would I have changed. Just the order I bought stuff.

My brain says "less" ,

but my heart says "Nah!"

Shortly after getting into the game, Target clearance out the core sets for $12. Which led to me buying 4, plus the X wing expansion and TIE fighter expansions, for 5 and 9 respectively. And I continued to buy the amount for 100pt game, so I had 5 Y wings, 6 A wings, 4 B wings, 2 YT-1300s (I was planning on at some point getting a third), and 2 HWKs (I couldn't justify getting all 6). My imp collection was large but not as big, 9 TIEs, 3 x1, 2 Firesprays, 2 Interceptors, 2 Bombers, 2 Shuttles.

And then they announced the imp aces, and the rebel transport, and all of a sudden I was having way too many of each model. Shortly there afterwards came the Rebel Aces expansion, giving me more A and B wings. So, starting with wave 4, I greatly cut back on what I purchased, 1 E wing, 2 Z95s (was planning on getting 4 until MW was announced), 1 Phantom and 1 Defender. Since then I've continued that, but about a year ago had to split up my collection, selling like 3 X wings, 3 Y wings, 3 A wings, 2 B wings, the duplicates of the big ships, and a few various TIEs, and sell that on Ebay. Partially because I couldn't carry all of the ships around anymore, but more importantly because I just never used them.

Now I'm down to 4 X wings, 4 Y wings, 4 A wings, 3 B wings, 1 YT-1300, 1 HWK, 1 E wing, 4 Z95s, 1 YT-2400, and 1 K wing. Sadly, I have a gut feeling *cough* that I'm going to go up to 5-6 X wings again. And I might pick up a second K wing at some point since I like the ship. I would be fine with 3 Y wings, but I had 3 repainted when I split my collection and I didn't want to sell the repaints, and then MW came along and added a 4th.

And I recently bought another Rebel Aces pack - I wanted another A wing to actually do my first modification on (it should be a small mod) to make it like the A wings from Rebels, and decided to go with the RA instead of the AW pack because I wanted the cards more, and it gave me another B wing to repaint - they're fun ships to paint.

But I will say, I had a LOT of fun going to various stores looking for what models were in stock when I first got into the game - right after W2 hit and everything was mostly sold out. That was a fun game in and of itself!

Edit: As I kinda alluded to, but just to make it completely clear, if I were to buy a collection today, I wouldn't buy it as heavy in w1-3 as mine currently is. But that's also because you needed more of each ship type back then, where as now you have so many options that you can get by without 4 X wings or whatever.

Yes, I would have sold all of my Warhammer Fantasy Battle stuff before it became redundant.

Fewer Zs. One of the first things I ever bought was five rebel Zs.

And then I got another four from MW.

I'm drowning in Zs! Though

When I first started buying expansion packs, I'd order 2 or 3 at a time from miniature market. But within a few months I'd made enough small orders that if I had just ordered it all at once I'd have qualified for free shipping, I could've had a few more ships for the total price I'd paid in shipping. So now I only order at $100 minimum. Other than that, I've been fairly smart in my purchase, the only regrets are buying 1 too many TIE Interceptors and A-wings that almost never get used.

I would have bought less ships.

Instead of what I currently own, I would have just bought: Rebel aces, 2 B's, 2A's, Slave 1, TIE interceptor, TIE defender, TIE phantom.

Edit: After Playing Epic tonight, I take it all back. I now remember why I bought all my ships.

but Zs are one cool looking ship!!

I just recently got back in to the game, and so I bought a small Scum and Villainy squadron all at once. Waiting for the 2nd half of it to be released though.

If I could buy things over, I would probably not buy Rebel Aces or that extra B-wing, since all I play is Imperial. I'd probably not buy a 2nd Advanced.

I only bought 1 Z-95, but it was a pleasant surprise to find out I can use it with the Hound's Tooth.

Ultimately I would not store them at my Bro's apartment again. That way they wouldn't get smashed or have beer spilled on the cards and dials. Had to repurchase an Interceptor to replace a broken model and replace a missing Turr Phenir card. I lost My Krassis Trelix card over there too, but buying a 2nd Firespray for the replacement cards was a good choice because running 33 point Bounty Hunters turns out to be superior to the Defender, which I still haven't purchased.

I'm glad that I always borrowed Engine Upgrades and never cracked and bought a Falcon, since Hound's Tooth will come with one. Wish the Punisher came with more than a single Extra Munitions, because I never see myself fielding more than one.

I found out about X-wing in December 2014 and started buying that January. I jumped in with both feet and I'm current with everything. That put a big dent in my wallet! The only change I would've made was finding out about the game earlier and buying waves as they were released. I think I'll pass on the Gozanti though. I missed out on 2-1/2 years of play and this great forum.

Going back, knowing what I do now?

I would not have bought that 4th starter set.

I probably would have limited myself to just one of each rebel product, instead of 2.

Would only have bought one firespray, and that just to use with scum

Maaaybe only one each of the shuttle and decimator. Maybe not though.

I would have gone straight for my current storage solution instead of the 4 different iterations of custom foam trays that I went through.

Yes, I would have sold all of my Warhammer Fantasy Battle stuff before it became redundant.

Ha! I'm looking at all my 40K sitting there collecting dust since I started X-Wing and thinking "I really should sell this before 40K goes the way WFB".

I see it, I buy it, what need changing?

I wish I didn't have to buy that hideous K-wing in order to get cards for my Scum/Imperial lists...

Nope... I love... LOVE my wonderful STAR WARS X-WING Toys!

:D

I am going to keep buying everything, even that crap Action vacuum if they make the **** thing.

Hi Bro... here we are loving us some X-WING!

YUP... HERE WE ARE!

:D

Wouldn't change a thing. Happy with the models I have and the manner in which they were purchased.

I'm an OT fella though. So I only have OT ships. Makes it easier on the wallet and storage space.

I probably wouldn't have doubled up on Imperial Aces and picked up a 2nd Interceptor instead.

:o ooh pretty red paint job

but no Alpha and Avenger squad pilots :(

In a feverish haze of excitement when the CR90 first came out, I bought an extra TIE bomber (originally had 2) for the Empire to use and they didn’t even end up using a single bomber in any of the missions! My group caught onto the whole “ordinance is too expensive and inefficient” thing very quickly.

I’d like to trade/sell the extra ship to make room for the Punisher.

Also, 2 less TIE fighter expansions now that the Gozanti is coming soon.
