Tournament etiquette

By ONEnONLY1, in X-Wing

So I went to my local shop for a tournament for the summer kit. I showed up running the classic Bounty's nightmare list ran by Sable Gryphon in the Austin regionals. My first match I faced tie advanced swarm with accuracy corrector and the tie title with Darth Vader leading with advanced targeting computer. He did not fly well as Boba was in range 1 at all times and the match was over in about 10 turns. He complained that the store should ban lists and my list was too good, and I shouldn't bring a nationals winning list to a store tournament. My wisdom is, is he right? Or is he just being a sore loser because he got demolished with a list he has wanted to run for months?

The second case, assuming all facts are as presented.

Unless it was meant to be a casual tournament he's being a sore loser.

From the sounds of it the game was very one sided which was probably the tipping point.

I've had games where I've tabled friends by turn three and I usually discount that game and ask them to play again but obviously not an option in a tournament.

There are also many cases of tournament-winning lists being brought by folks who do terribly. Success with a list often comes from experience with it, and an understanding of how best to deploy it. There's no magic guaranteed win list, although there are certainly some that fair better than others.

My wisdom is, is he right?

No.

Or is he just being a sore loser because he got demolished with a list he has wanted to run for months?

I just think he is dissapointed that he didn't do better. When you feel like that, you either dig in and improve your game.

Ask the one who defeated you for tips and ideas.

Watch youtube videos that show high level games and where the commentary is about strategy in the game.

Practice alot.

Tweak your list.

Practice some more.

Or you can ask for bans, restriction and so on. Nothing of that will make you a better player.

Sore loser. You don't just need a good list, you also need the right dice rolls when you want them and to make the right decisions.

I am definitely a thematic player and field lists in keeping with my environment as well as my personal tastes. However this is my choice to do so and there is no onus on me to do this. If you have a list you really want to try (a world beating meta one or not) this is your prerogative and i have no issue with it. The only exception to this is if there was a prior agreement that you were privy to, to field a specific list type and you deliberately didn't join in (i'm assuming not from your OP). For me if i come up against a stronger list i see it as a challenge to see if i can overcome the perceived weakness of my list match-up and take it as a learning opportunity regardless... I also agree with slugrage-i've seen many people field strong lists only to under perform with them (this is especially apparent if the player has simply net-listed the squad rather than developed it themselves)...

Unless it was meant to be a casual tournament he's being a sore loser.

The fact that you pull the possibility into consideration that your whining opponent could be right is sad enough

Dude's a whiner.

Let him go, or get better at the game.

The ban-hammer should not be used.

I think we are all missing the most important part of the OP:

:D

Seriously, this list has no margin for error and can easily vanish with a bit of bad luck. It's not broken by any means. Sounds like your opponent was frustrated and intimidated and having a bad day. He's not right in any sense. The list shouldn't be banned, it's not unfair to bring a Regional winning list, and store tournaments are fair game to try to win.

How do you ban a list in X-Wing anyway? There are so many pilots and especially upgrades that can be swapped out you'd have to cut a REALLY wide swath if you didn't want a particular thing to show up.

Ok I have to apologize, I did some recherche: Your opponent had some bad day at the tournament. First, the doctor called him right before and told him he has to supplement intravenously with testosterone because he has an uterus growing inside his brain. Second, his girlfriend confessed him that she never loved him and that she had an affair with his piano teacher (and his brother). And with me...however, but she will give him a 14th chance when he proves whether he is worthy or not: He has to win the summer 2015 tournament...for her. The rest of the story is known...

the doctor called him right before and told him he has to supplement intravenously with testosterone because he has an uterus growing inside his brain

I want your drugs~

You, too, have a uterus growing inside your brain?

Dice blaming, whining, calling for bans and so on are poor sportsmanship imho.

I mean, it'd explain a lot?

Funny thing about x wing, is you can easily come up with a same list as one that wins a national, due to limited points/upgrade cards.

I've been stomped at tournaments, I've stomped people at tournaments. It's part of playing this game, with good and bad match ups all over the place.

Dice blaming, whining, calling for bans and so on are poor sportsmanship imho.

I had a match at Nationals where my opponent killed a healthy Firespray with a Phantom in two attacks (not two rounds of attacks from the whole list, two attacks). Am I allowed to blame the dice in that case?

You're always allowed to blame the green dice, little traitors mocking us with those blank faces...

How to complain about greens: if your opponent has any real control over the result, you've been outplayed. If not, ***** away. Never blame the player in any case, though, because it's not his fault (re: no control)

For example, A blocked soontir rolling four natural evades more than warrants some griping

Also,

Inb4 Vader + 3 ac tempests wins a nationals

However casual you consider a tournament to be is no guarantee or obligation that your opponents feel the same way. You did nothing wrong.

Tournament ettiquette:

Say hi

Shower beforehand

Check before going to the toilet

Don't touch stuff withouth asking

Don't eat at the table if it can be helped

Accept your loss or victory with grace

Yes. As should your opponent.

BTW, 3-4-5 ship lists aren't swarms.

Play within the rules and have a non-prick attitude, that's it. WAAC players don't have to be pricks and fly casual people are often pricks. Just behave.
