I ask because in my trials to find a game to introduce my kids to with campaign like play ... Descent I thought was it... but I hear gameplay wise IA is alot better ... I'd hate to buy into DE2 to find out that that a DE3 will be released .... I'd rather buy IA (Since my girls are bonkers for Star Wars as well... (If they only made Dr. Who campaigns... they would be in heaven lol))

IA has borrowed DE2 gameplay, not the opposite. DE2 is going to live for long, as least some years before any new edition, if ever
Its so confusing so many negative reviews of DE:2 so many positive reviews of IA... the problem is ... IA ... how do you really improve ... sure you get better with yoru blaster but its a blaster ... DE:2 you improve magical swords, mystical magic, I think High Fantasy is more entertaining ... Meh ... now I'm all turned off buying anything LoL....

Personnally, I have star wars at all, and I'm sure IA is not so good if you're not fond in it.
Descent is FFG personnal universe, so, better for sure. I hoped IA would be in Rex universe, but it is not

Yup I agree to many extents on this ... I love both environments equally but dungeon crawling seems really favored towards Fantasy.... Now I love the Rex universe and TI:3 is my all time favorite board game ... so anytime I can play in that universe I"m happy
I'm bought everything for DE2, and i'm not regreting anything, even if in all, I may have spend around ... 1000€ ...
I think we'll see some years before a third edition comes out, but it will, one day.
FFG has to pay for the license to build anything Star Wars related. Chances are they make far more profit on their own custom games, such as Descent, since it's their intellectual property.
The quality of 2nd edition's models are much better than the originals from 1st edition. It's easy to always add modifications to any campaign going forward, similar to Heirs of Blood, to balance the game without needing to do a complete 3rd edition re-write.
I'm guessing 2nd edition will be out for many years to come.

IA is descent 3.0, in space, and as an evolution of the system there are many improvements in IA.
But that doesn't mean that descent 2.0 is a bad game, it's one of FFG's best selling games for a reason.
D2e has already had a long life which means you can play with many overlord variations and billions of hero part combinations.
The IA players have only had a handful of heroes and one campaign to play for the past 8 months, right now D2e has a lot more depth.
D2e also has a long life ahead, FFG are getting creative with the expansions to extend the life of the game.
Solo campaigns, campaign books, overlord focussed expansions, H&M packs with NEW monsters.
FFG have also restarted the cross promotion of terrinoth games, starting with the undead releases for battlelore + descent and following up with the runebound release (with the same heroes as descent).
There is also the quest vault for an endless supply of quests.
Descent has so much going for it that IA does not. Both games will have a bright future.
I agree. The rise of IA does not mean the fall of D2E. When/if D3E is ever released, it will likely incorporate some changes learned during the lifetime of D2E that are already reflected in IA. If it didn't, there would be no point in making a 3rd edition. However, D2E is doing just fine as is without a major overhaul, and is still receiving new content, as evidenced by the announcement of Mists of Bilehall and Treaty of Champions.
I would like to see them at least make a conversion kit that allows you to incorporate the new rules like the los, miss on def die and alternating order of activation from IA into 2E. Honestly I like IA a lot better than 2E now.
If they make a 3rd ed I'd love to see:
-A return of the exploration element and hidden info that 1st ed had. It's pretty well done in IA except I miss how there were entire rooms not assembled until you opened a door to look inside from 1st.
-Less focus on short play time and instead have a convenient way to pause the map any time for resuming it later.
-Rewards for killing monsters from 1st.
-Incentive for killing heroes like 1st and IA.
-Being able to train your hero to add power dice.
-Static armor values instead of random rolls. At the least make the armor roll never = 0 like the blank faces on the brown instead make it at least always block 1-3 or so. Silver could be 2-4 and black 3-5. Then compensate by adding more damage potential with power die and other upgrades. Don't let it get out of hand like in 1st heroes with gold items and upgrades doing like 25 hearts of damage etc.
As someone who has started buying into D2 expansions and running campaigns with friends I certainly hope not to see descent replaced. In my current campaign my hero players seem unstoppable, although a stalemate with twin towers had them on the edge of their seats before they finally managed a successful counter attack through carefully planned teamwork. Disappointing to have an overlord loss but It was satisfying to observe their enjoyment of the game and their enthusiasm for our next campaign of SoN.
As for Star Wars I have got the X-wing game as a Christmas present for my oldest son. The space battles were always the biggest scenes in the movies. Dungeon crawling for me is a high fantasy staple, which FF pull off with aplomb in my opinion.

Is there anything you can take from other lines and use in descent or just duplication of stuff? From what I saw there is nothing you can use in one game that can also be used in another. For descent I you could get new heroes to play in descent from other games that you bought.

If you like IA's Line of Sight rules, just use them, honestly. I've been playing Descent now for almost a year using Imperial Assault's line of sight rules and they are pretty much perfectly compatible and far better rules.
That something that very likely might do. Have a descent 2nd edition revised edition with minor rule changes like you menton. Most content would still be good but they can fix clean up rule issues. They have done that with other game.
Don't forget about all of the excellent variants available for Descent, which greatly increase the already great variety and replay value.

The quest vault is a tool- if we want more out of descent, we have everything we need to make it, short of new tiles and cards (and some people are custom printing those, too.)

Imo the biggest difference is that hero party and imperial player don't activate all their units at once but rather one by one. So far this feels to me like it only dumbs down tactical and strategical options/decision space.
The other big difference is hidden information. There are a few instances where the imperial player gets strong units just because it's turn 5 and the hero players are not allowed to know this. So far this always came as a surprise to the Rebels, thinking they had good chances until the support hit, while the IP knew from turn 3 that they won't make it by turn 7.
Also there is a lot less material (monsters, heroes) to choose from, yet it's considerably more expensive.
Imo IA creates a better narrative for the campaign, but is in most other ways a more player friendly version of Descent, where the heroes don't give up early in the game because they don't know what will hit them later in the game. Imo on the flipside that makes the game kind of easy and unexciting for the IP, because if he saves his reinforcement for the time when he gets free support, he rarly loses.

I recall on BGG that during the first year that D2 was out, positive reviews were all over the place. Haters gonna hate really. I still prefer D2 over IA. Fantasy, open map structure, overlord cards, bundled turns, better replayability, classes that aren't tied to a specific character ... The rushing aspect in IA feels "off" because of the setting.
