Watching all six Episodes

By Xander Krane, in X-Wing Off-Topic

It has been a long time since I've done this. But starting today my computer goes down and I sit in front of the television and watch all six Star Wars Episodes.

I'm going the I to VI order.

But I do feel that Star Wars should be introduced to the uninitiated in the following order:

Episode IV

Episode V

Episode I

Episode II

Episode III

Episode VI

If ever I have kids, that's the order I'd show them. The whole "I am your father" part should always be a surprise.

Episode V is where he says No I am your father. You have it second in your list so not sure how that helps with the surprise ?

Because you don't understand narrative?

Simply, you can't show the prequels first because "Anakin Skywalker" is obviously Luke's father, and stated as such in ANH. RotJ can be shown last because it caps out the story, and cutting the PT in as a flashback after ESB is the best mesh.

No need to be rude.

We usually just end up watching the ones we like best on a regular basis or as my kids call them "the one with snow and the big things daddy likes" and "the one with bears"

I like the machete order. TPM is the most irrelevant movie in a planned trilogy, ever.

The Machete Order is the way to go.

ANH

ESB

AOTC

ROTS

ROTJ

TPM is thrown out because of irrelevance.

Starting with the prequels isn't a good idea because it assumes you know what Jedi are for instance and seeing Yoda then spoils ESB, even without the whole Anakin/Vader thing.

So I've always wanted to introduce someone to Star Wars and have finally gotten that chance. So far we have watched A New Hope and I have planned since the beginning for us to view the films in the Machete Order. This person enjoyed A New Hope and is looking forward to the other movies before seeing The Force Awakens.

I do have one problem with the Machete order however... it ruins the surprise of Luke and Leia being siblings because you see Padme name them at the end of Revenge of the Sith.

That is such a small thing though that it barely takes away from the movie. :P .

Not worth delaying AOTC and ROTS for in my opinion.

Can't we just substitute some of the more character important episodes from Clone wars in for Episode two, that way we don't deal with the more whiny bits of Anakin instead rather focusing on the war the Republic had to deal with seeing where he gave into the dark side bit by bit until moving on to Episode three.

But then we miss the all-unimportant origin story of Boba Fett and the CG Clones! Or Mace Windu being the angriest Jedi ever and nobody caring that he's basically a Dark Jedi! Or Anakin's monologue about sand!

Ugh, I never liked Boba being a clone.

Ugh, I never liked Boba being a clone.

This. Making him a clone of a failed Bounty Hunter and Soldier just adds to the pain when blind Han Solo sends him hurtling into the Sarlacc.

When my kids are old enough to watch them (apparently 4 & 2.5 isn't old enough according to the wife....??), it'll be in release order; IV-VI. I'm going to ignore the prequels entirely and hope-beyond-hope that Disney gives us what we all want: a remastered original trilogy in their original, cinematic release versions.

I'm also going to avoid the massive spolier alert my father gave me when I watched ANH for the first time in the mid 80s, on VHS taped off the TV: "that man in the suit is Luke father." Jeez, thanks Dad....

Never show people the prequels no one deserves to suffer that kind of abuse.

Never show people the prequels no one deserves to suffer that kind of abuse.

But what about the hilarious to make fun of dialogue in the prequels? Surely that is worth laughing over.

The Phantom Menace

"That's so wizard!"

"Now THIS is podracing!"

"Are you an angel?"

"Remember: Your focus determines your reality."

"It was possible he was conceived by the midi-chlorians."

Lines like this next one make you want to know what they are talking about when they say revenge but it's never expounded upon in the movies other than the fact that Sith and Jedi are enemies. Pointless dialogue and one of the only two times Darth Maul speaks.

"At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge."

Playing KotOR (1) made a lot of sense out of the prequels. When Anikan slaughters all the Jedi kids, I knew that it was vengeance for my massacre of the Sith temple in KotOR. It was incredible and harrowing.

Personally - and this really is just me talking here - I'd go

Don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but this order also preserves the surprise of Palpatine being the Sith Lord, which is sorta obvious but maybe for a kid or a new viewer it could come as a surprise. Maybe.

Of course you don't find out Luke has a sister until Return of the Jedi. So perhaps it's best to watch original trilogy first. Then the prequels. At least first time around.

Unless you think that's an unimportant plot point. Just don't be surprised when the new initiate shouts out: "Urgh! She just kissed her brother!" during Empire Strikes Back.

I like the prequels because they're Star Wars, and they do tell the story (badly I will concede) before New Hope. So much potential wasted, but still a fantastic watch if you can tolerate Jar Jar Binks and those awful chat up lines in Attack of the Clones. In fact, it's hard for the brain to compute that snivelling baby Anakin became that awesome Darth Vader, but that's writers and actors for you.

Can't wait for Episode VII!

Hmmmm, just noticed the preview panes for that Youtube clip I posted includes one for Leon - the full movie.

I guess I know what I'm going to be watching later.

YES! Precisely in that order!

Then if you have kids, pick up Ep I - III, place them in the garbage (vigourously) and watch Caravan of Courage.

I've always been a fan of telling people to watch the original trilogy first, and then watch Clones/Sith. There is really nothing important that happens in Phantom, and it was just complete ****, so it is not required viewing.

As much as people hate on the prequels, they do add another layer to the story, when you remove all of the whiny political crap.

I showed my wife all six in chronological order and I started the same with my brother in law.

I feel bad for any kids who are denied half the saga because one of their parents doesn't like them.

Also ditto for just omitting TPM. Its my third favorite of the six.

Talking order of favourite, mine goes:

Empire Strikes Back

Return of the Jedi

A New Hope

The Phantom Menace (despite annoying Jar Jar)

Revenge of the Sith (ruined by yet more boohoo from Anakin)

Attack of the Clones (ruined by stupid chat up lines and cry baby Anakin)

Seriously, I found Anakin and Padme more annoying than Jar Jar Binks. At least he was a self confessed clumsy fool. So it was in character for him to be irritating.

Original Trilogy I could watch on continuous loop. The prequels are a once a year event. Hopefully the sequels will sit between the two, pushing the prequels to 7th, 8th and 9th place.
