Conversion kit vs Hero and Monster Collections

By flightmaster101, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I've been collecting Hero and monster collections (hmc) because I don't want to pay eBay prices for 1e monsters. Just curious from people who have gotten both the conversion kit and hmcs:

Are the conversion kit monsters better? Did the hmc monsters get nerfed? My friend who had 1e and the conversion kit seemed to think so after playing with me. Just wanted to get other thoughts on the matter.

I have collected everything from the beginning, as I was a long time D1e player.

Quite frankly, I think you benefit from coming later, as rather than considering the H&M kits being "nerfed" you should see it as FFG better balancing the traits, abilities, heroic feats, etc.

I also happen to be one who thinks the actual figures in the H&M kits are better looking that the original D1e figures.

I second that opionion. The sculps have much more detail than the 1st edition models and are more to scale; matching what was delivered in 2nd edition's starter set.

I have seen my friend' 1e figures and I totally agree with that point. We just got the feeling that the heroes got more powerful and monsters got less powerful.

But then again this opinion saves me $30!

Honestly I'm glad, we introduced a few into our games and I'm still winning as overlord, but its not as much of a cakewalk as it was before.

Maybe some monsters are nerfed, sometimes they are upgraded, and most of the time just balanced.

The heroes are the ones that have the most changes

Thumbs up. That's the only reason I'm considering to get the H&M collections...until they release the last one, with a previous unreleased kind of monster. Nice trick, FFG, nice trick. Now I´ll get it for sure in a near future ;)

The old heroes were really ugly and a bit too small about scale conparing to monsters and new 2nd edition heroes.

I own the D1, and bought back all H&M packs, and never regreted it, even if some balancing are not always so good, the new minis and quests are great addition to the game.

I prefer the H&Ms myself. Sure, the CK is worth alot more in value, but I've never really been all that dissapointed opening up an H&M. Consider what you get:

-4 sculpted plastic hero figures

- 4 Updated hero Sheets.

-3 Monster Groups, both the figures and cards.

- A Rumor card and an Advanced Quest card you can incorporate into a campaign.

- 2 Quests.

- An OL card the OL can win as a reward.

They're sorta like a mini expansion.

For those who have 1st Edition, the CK was probably great. Back then if people had 1st Edition, all they needed to do was buy the CK with 2nd Edition and they had alot to use. But 1st Edition is obsolete now and some of the heroes from 1st Edition were viewed by some as Overpowered. So FF decided to update them a bit and now you have the H&Ms. So what does that really make the CK at the moment? Obsolete. I don't mind the cost of H&Ms... they make a good item to go on the Christmas List. I also don't own 1st Edition, so for me the H&Ms are just the way to go. But if I were to get anything before them it would be the Small Box's expansions ( at least one.)

If you are collecting the H&M packs there is no need whatsoever to pick up the Conversion Kit.

In the CK the heroes weren't balanced that well, whereas the H&M heroes seem fine.

The monsters of the CK have much less personal abilities than in the H&M packs. Most monsters got buffed or a little reworked, very few got nerfed (only really the Ogre comes to my mind).

Imo the CK is great if you only own the base game and want a lot of content to really get to know the game, before investing much money. If you collect the H&Ms and most of the other Descent stuff, the CK adds next to nothing.

The H&M packs are vastly superior to the conversion kit, in pretty much every way except price.

not so sure ...

Since the CK is about 30$ and comes with no figures, if you want all the monsters and minis, you need to have the base game (100$), the 3 expansions (50$ each) and dungeonquest (55$), so around 305$

Each H&M box is around 35$ and there's nine of them, so around 315$.

About the same price to me

The conversion kit costs $20. You don't get miniatures, but that's because it assumes you have first edition figures. You can easily print out tokens or something.

So the conversion kit is $20, and the first edition minis are $285, if you can ever find them again.

Sorry, that's the prices I paied in europe
