So it's interesting that all the "small" tiles are identical to existing tiles in the core set. Here's the matches:
TS08 == C17
TS09 == C18
TS10 == C35
TS11 == C36
TS12 == C37

Is normal to reuse material between expansions. Look to the upgrade cards on xwing.
I wish that rather than numbering the new tiles as Twin Shadows 1 through n, they had just started numbering them from the end of the core set.
Are those tiles *EXACTLY* the same, with the same artwork, or are they just the same tile shape?

I wasn't complaining, I'm happy to have duplicates of the utility pieces, it's just certain other things starting with....

This. On top of not starting the numbering over again it would have been nice that the duplicate tiles were numbered identically as well.

Yes, they are exactly the same tile other than the TS number vs the Core number. Same shape and terrain on both sides.
The TS marking is nice if you want to separate your TS stuff from the base box, but unless you are selling it, I cant think of a reason why that would be necessary. I, too, wish they would have just kept the existing numbering system. Did they number them like that in Descent 2E?
I think the symbol would have been enough to do sepertation without having to duplicate numbers. The only advantage to it I see is it makes you be explicit on map building without having to remember that tiles 39-46 are TS and 47-?? are RtH, etc.
Think about the amount of space required on the tile for the numbering. It won't be long before we get more than 100 different tiles, at which point it starts to take up more space on the tile. I don't think that would be a huge deal, but it does seem simpler from a future-proofing standpoint.
Also, what if someone doesn't ever buy TS but only goes with the Core and then Return to Hoth (the next big box due out after TS)? Then you've got tiles numbered 1-39 with the Core and then 53-72 (or whatever) with RtH. It could go either way, but I think the system they've chosen is actually a bit safer from a future-proofing standpoint.
Those are all joining tiles and end tiles. It makes sense to have more of those to allow more complex maps later. Maybe the extras are used in the Twin Shadows maps? Or if not, they could have been added to allow more options for the extra missions coming in the various figure expansions.
