Turn off the fire hose!

By patox, in X-Wing

But, as you say, that doesn't change the fact that between GenCon and September 4 we're likely to get the Raider, Wave 7, and the mystery SKUs, which is something like 10 times faster than the overall average pace of release.

And between September 24th and September 26th we're likely to get 4 new ships, four ships in three days means like FOUR HUNDRED SHIPS A YEAR! No wonder people complain, how can anyone possibly keep up with such a release rate?

If FFG's plans to release the next wave in December hold, most of their releases for this calendar year (two epic ships, two of the three full waves, and the three mystery SKUs) will have occurred in Q3 and Q4. Regardless of what happens in Q4, with eight new SKUs, Q3 2015 will feature the most releases of any quarter in the X-wing game so far.

Or hey, I can cut it up from another perspective: let each year start and end at GenCon, counting GenCon releases as part of the previous year. Year 1 featured three waves and a core set. Year 2 featured two Aces packs, two Epic ships, and two waves. Year 3 featured two waves and one Epic ship. That makes Year 2 (again, measuring anniversary to anniversary) the busiest full year so far.

But just the first half of Year 4 (that is, the six-month period that started immediately after GenCon 2015) will have one Epic ship (the Imperial Assault Carrier), one wave (the SW:Rebels wave), and the mystery SKUs ([redacted]), meaning if FFG manages only one more full wave between January 2016 and GenCon, Year 4 will outpace Year 2 as the game's busiest year.

TL;DR: By the standards of this game, we're getting a lot very quickly. Perhaps you can come up with a reasonable standard that applies to this game by which this summer and fall haven't been busy, but if so you haven't yet mentioned it.

I just converted much of the remainder of my old M:TG collection into credit at CSI... and promptly pre-ordered the Gozanti and all of Wave 8. The rest of my credit will go straight to whatever is released on September 4th.

I will need to look into a new storage solution for X-Wing by the time I get all of these orders.

Over the Internet? Do they pay well? I would do that.

They pay a decent price, but they can be picky about which cards they want. I like the +25% bonus for choosing store credit as the payment method. If you sell them as specific singles, you get from 2 cents to $$$Black Lotus$$$ depending on the card in question. Otherwise, they give you like 0.4 cents to 25 cents a card for random basic land through rares.

I know this isn't the place (read proper forum) but I'm going to continue.

So what do you think is better CSI or EBay? CSI is easier for sure.

My wallet feels like a herd of Jawas ran over it. A big herd.

All the Star Wars product news coming out (and more is to come) has caused a disturbance in the Force.

It's as if a million wallets cried out at once and then were suddenly emptied. I fear something terrible has happened to my bank account.

our ships in three days means like FOUR HUNDRED SHIPS A YEAR!

That is both uncalled for, and way beneath you. If this kind of pointless drivel is the best you can manage in a post, you may want to take another break from the forms.

The point both myself and VS were making, is there is a lot of X-Wing stuff coming out in a fairly short time. So while yes there isn't a ton of stuff per year, there's still a lot of stuff to buy in a period of 4-6 weeks.

But, as you say, that doesn't change the fact that between GenCon and September 4 we're likely to get the Raider, Wave 7, and the mystery SKUs, which is something like 10 times faster than the overall average pace of release.

Also as someone else already brought up, X-Wing unlike other games often encourages you to buy ships you neither want or need for the cards. So combine this with the fact we typically buy multiples. I don't play Attack Wing but do you need all of the ships to say competitive? If not then a comparison of their total number to X-Wing isn't a good one.

I am going with CSI and a local comic shop to sell my M:tG. The only downside with CSI is paying for shipping to get it to them. Ebay is good for really rare cards-- I sold my Lotus there 5 years ago-- but the selling fees are kind of a downer (10% if you don't subscribe!).

Considering you can use and mix everything in Attack Wing, yeah, it encourages you to buy everything.

Considering you can use and mix everything in Attack Wing, yeah, it encourages you to buy everything.

But only if you want a squad of everything. Otherwise you'd buy the squad you need. Of course some personnel are on other ships but you'd still not be required to buy every ship I believe. At least it doesn't encourage you quite in the same way.

As far as buying ships... my goals are:

1) Get at least one of every release. I like all the factions and ships, since I have been playing with Star Wars toys as long as I can remember. (Currently accomplished)

2) Get 100 points of every ship. (~33%)

3) Get enough ships to model every on-screen starfighter battle (and then from Armada) and fleet action in the Original Trilogy films. I'll have to declare a sensible stopping point for the Battle of Endor-- maybe one fighter wing of Imperials? This goal will take a long time.

If they schedule stays as busy as it is the next few months, just keeping up with 1) will be hard. However, I am of the opinion that this plethora of releases is an anomaly related to the new film, so I think a release schedule of about 3 1/2 waves per year is both optimal and probable.

Your first goal is basically my only goal. Have 1 of everything. I wasn't too far behind but it looks like that is going to change this year.

Just want my Armada Wave 2.

I spend far FAR more on youth sports for my 3 sons than I ever have on X-Wing. Considering a good baseball bat costs $250, catchers gear, cleats for baseball and football, basketball shoes, uniforms, indoor training, etc..., this game is cheap.

I see what you mean about the Ramen Noodles but really guys dumpster diving is way cheaper. ;)

If we all pitch in for a Costco membership, we can get gallons of Ramen noodles for pennies on the dollar, plus it is really easy to steal their lettuce.

TL;DR: By the standards of this game, we're getting a lot very quickly. Perhaps you can come up with a reasonable standard that applies to this game by which this summer and fall haven't been busy, but if so you haven't yet mentioned it.

And what happens if your year runs from September to September rather than August to August? You lose Wave 7 and the Raider from your math, cutting your year 4 in half. Not the busiest year any more, by far. This is the problem I have with what you're doing - every time you set a goalpost you're stretching it just right to make sure you catch a wave. I thought your overall release pace was actually reasonable - if the game's overall average is a little under one ship a month, then the gap between releases should be N months, where N is the number of ships in the (previous/next) wave. Each release bumps the timer up a bit, and it starts dropping again. You hit zero, things have slowed down. Time left on the clock between major releases, things are speeding up.

So are things going to be speeding up? If they hit the December target for Wave 8 and the Gozanti, maybe. But the release cycle has been so erratic I don't think that actually means anything. Will we get anything more before GenCon? Highly unlikely. So in a year's window (running from just before one release to just before another, not fenceposting them) we'll get 2 waves and 1.5 large ships. That's, at best, exactly what we've been generally getting. It's only OMG SUPER FAST if you fencepost your time gate to catch releases at either end.

Your last actually hits the point I was trying to make - "a reasonable standard that applies to this game" is not a reasonable standard as it would apply to pretty much any other game out there. The release rate, even if we're generous and let you slice the numbers the way you want is not, in an objective sense, a lot of stuff. Yet the amount of concern over the speed of the releases is higher in X-wing than any other game I've seen.

That seems like a very curious mismatch to me - lowest real release rate, highest concern that the releases are too fast. So why is that? I think it's a combination of people being sucked in by the (false) promise that X-wing was a cheap game, combined with the sales model. I think there's some interesting discussion there, but it dares tread on the potential that FFG's anything less than gods of incarnate generosity to the players, so must be shouted down.

When people start complaining about the cost of a hobby leading them to financial ruin, I always shake my head. This is a hobby. If i is too expensive, don't do it. Plain and simple. I would like to try my hand at auto racing as a hobby, but I simply can't afford it. That is my reality. If you can't afford ~$50 a month or so on X-Wing models, don't do it. No game is worth ruining your life over. Or get a better job so you can afford it.

DC, most if not all of these 'complaints' are tongue-in-cheek. Though we're 'complaining' about all the stuff coming in the next four or five months I'd like to think that no one here is so addicted to the game that they would do something as stupid as digging themselves into financial hole. The comments should be viewed in the context of the previous released 6 waves in three years.

Wave 6 February Release

  • 4 ships

Wave 6.5 August Release

  • 2 ships

Wave 7 August Release

  • 4 ships

XXXXXXXX Release September Release

  • 2-5 XXXXX?????

Wave 7.5 At Printers

  • 1 ship

Wave 8 In development-possible, but doubtful for 2015 release

  • 4 ships

It’s entirely possible that there could be 20 new ships this year. X-Wing success comes from the nuance and fine-tuning of the game. With this many ships, this seems more and more unlikely.

Need an X-Wing credit card.

Funny. I kinda do. Its called AmazonCredit... I'll be still paying off my bill from Wave 6 when I start buying Wave 7.

Seeing as how i'll be starting First Order and Resistance instead, and sticking to the new film stuff i'm hoping they don't leave me hanging with just the starter set for months on end. I'd like to be able to expand 1-2 different options for each faction at least. I have no interest in mixing the old with the new, for me its one or the other. There's a 30 year gap and there is no evidence of the old ships being presently used in the new movie and I like to keep games relatively fluffy.

The slow release cycle might irk me in regards to the new movie, hopefully they at least put out the starter. And then Poes black X wing, and the heavily gunned SF Tie with the red mark by the beginning of dec. Otherwise i'll be bored to death.

These things kind of deter me away from the new set and make me want the old, because at least I know there's already plenty of choices out already.

Need an X-Wing credit card.

That would be glorious and terrible, they would own me it'll been easier to just direct deposit straight to them at that point

Direct deposit. Not bad, not bad at all. (Stroking chin)

Possibly my new favorite picture from a galaxy far, far away.
