Turn off the fire hose!

By patox, in X-Wing

Haha! I don't have to worry about X-wing waves! So I have all this money!

Money for

Smash Up Munchkin

MTG Battle for Zendikar

Dice masters War of Light

Mage wars Academy

Ashes

Uh Oh. This is geting a bit much...

Expansions for Call of Cthulhu, 40k Conquest, Netrunner...

Aaaaagh! Game flood! Overload! halp!

It seems like a fire hose because we've had our normal stuff, then with under a week's notice we got a new core set, new damage deck, new maneuver, and within a week later - two more ships in wave 8. Of course this feels bad!

I was in Attack Wing from the moment it started until the Borg wave a year later. 4 ships each wave, almost each month, along with a prize ship each month meant I was playing in 4 store's tournaments, paying $20/month to play those ($5/tourney) plus $60/month for regular releases. You didn't ever need to buy multiples of a ship though. The good thing was that the participation prizes you got easily went for $10 on eBay, and if you got doubles of a prize ship it went for ~$50!! During the time I was in, I was basically playing for free. Anything with a turret had range 1-2, so if you knew how to fly (I was mainly Klingon and romulan) you could really clean up. Then the Borg came out. All the fun was sucked from the game, and every match turned into borg on borg fest of rolling tons of modified dice against barely agile ships. It was like moving a falcon with 6 primary attack like a rook across the board. NO FUN. They also instituted a $15/tournament fee and a blind buy, so eff that. I watched my expenses go WAY up, not to mention it got popular enough that to be a completionist meant I was now out at least $100/mo and had no way to recoup those costs. So no, I didn't stay in long. Sold my whole collection in one go for about $500 and never looked back.

I get that X-Wing isn't like that. I can't self-sustain off the prizes, nor do I want to. I really like what we get! We also want multiples of a ship (I get at least 2 of each small ship, 1 of each large ship, and 1 of each epic). The cool thing is that I want to USE all these ships! I build all kinds of crazy fleets, to play a paltry 3-4 games a week. It feels like a lot now, but I have enough to tide me over until wave 8 for SURE.

But dayum... dose credit cards! If they offered points for x-wing merchandise I'd be doomed.

I love the game, love speculating about it.

But I also can´t buy everything. Although my hatred of A-wings might have something to do with it :D

So I don´t get stressed with more waves.

The sooner they release more and more waves the better I can decide what I want for my humbe collection :)

Keep it going FFG!

But, as you say, that doesn't change the fact that between GenCon and September 4 we're likely to get the Raider, Wave 7, and the mystery SKUs, which is something like 10 times faster than the overall average pace of release.

And between September 24th and September 26th we're likely to get 4 new ships, four ships in three days means like FOUR HUNDRED SHIPS A YEAR! No wonder people complain, how can anyone possibly keep up with such a release rate?

If FFG's plans to release the next wave in December hold, most of their releases for this calendar year (two epic ships, two of the three full waves, and the three mystery SKUs) will have occurred in Q3 and Q4. Regardless of what happens in Q4, with eight new SKUs, Q3 2015 will feature the most releases of any quarter in the X-wing game so far.

Or hey, I can cut it up from another perspective: let each year start and end at GenCon, counting GenCon releases as part of the previous year. Year 1 featured three waves and a core set. Year 2 featured two Aces packs, two Epic ships, and two waves. Year 3 featured two waves and one Epic ship. That makes Year 2 (again, measuring anniversary to anniversary) the busiest full year so far.

But just the first half of Year 4 (that is, the six-month period that started immediately after GenCon 2015) will have one Epic ship (the Imperial Assault Carrier), one wave (the SW:Rebels wave), and the mystery SKUs ([redacted]), meaning if FFG manages only one more full wave between January 2016 and GenCon, Year 4 will outpace Year 2 as the game's busiest year.

TL;DR: By the standards of this game, we're getting a lot very quickly. Perhaps you can come up with a reasonable standard that applies to this game by which this summer and fall haven't been busy, but if so you haven't yet mentioned it.

Another way to look at it is by MSRP if you buy one of every SKU, which now looks like this:

Using official launch dates, not soft launch dates...

Sept. 2012: Core Set, Wave 1 $100
Oct. 2012: Dice Pack $8
Feb. 2013: Wave 2 $90
Sept. 2013: Wave 3 $75
March 2014: Imperial Aces $30
April 2014: Rebel Transport $60
May 2014: Tantive IV $90
June 2014: Wave 4 $60
Sept. 2014: Rebel Aces $30
Nov. 2014: Wave 5 $70
Feb. 2015: Playmats, Wave 6 $185
Aug. 2015: Imperial Raider, Wave 7	$195
Sept. 2015: TFA Core Set $40
Dec. 2015?: Assault Carrier, Wave 8	$215

And we can look at the releases in blocks of time:

Sept. 2012 to Sept. 2013 (13 months): $273 ......Core Set through Wave 3

Oct. 2013 to Feb. 2014 (5 months): nothing

March 2014 to Feb. 2015 (12 months): $525 .....Imperial Aces through Wave 6

March 2015 to July 2015 (5 months): nothing

Aug. 2015 to Dec. 2015 (5 months): $450 ......Imperial Raider through Wave 8

Need an X-Wing credit card.

Just imagine - instead of cashback rewards or airline miles, you get a random acrylic token set or alt-art card for every $100 spent.

Or, if you go over your limit, the reader ejects your card and you can waive off the fee...

Aaaaand now FFG has the Legend of the 5 rings IP!

One more LCG that will come out in 2017!

My wallet is crying foul!

At least they are giving us a nice long heads up.

With all of the tears over empty wallets and drained bank accounts there's some credit that has to be given. FFG has maintained Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures to a high standard for 3 years now. With the game growing in popularity year after year it's only going to keep going. The movie schedule will bring even more players in as the Star Wars hype engine is underway.

I personally feel their release schedule for waves is just about right. Then again I'm only invested in one of their Star Wars lines. Perhaps some of these suggestions of slowing down the releases comes from those who have chosen to include Armada and/or Imperial Assault to their collection. This means you have voluntarily drained yourself. Not that you shouldn't be able to follow and collect all the games that you want.

I'm already saving up!

Oh and I have forgotten about the upcomming warhammer quest game and EotW: Alien invasion RPG...dammit! ;)

Frankly, I'm losing track of what wave we're on.

Much of that is both personal and anecdotal: I've had a busy summer and I've been doing both X-Wing and Armada. Still, it sounds like I'm not exactly alone in being a bit overwhelmed by all the new stuff.

People (or, at least Buhallin) speaks of the meta being stale right now. I'm wondering if there's an ontological category for the meta we're in right now. Is there really a meta if nobody really knows what the deal is?

I'm at the point where I bought the TIE Punisher and the new Core Set almost more as an afterthought than in excited anticipation. While I want to continue playing X-Wing, it's starting to seem like a race that I'm just not keeping up with, to the point where I wonder if I just want to stop buying ships for a while - maybe even giving the game a bit of a rest.

The stuff coming out just isn't exciting me right now, and I think that the fire hose is to blame more than my own situation. Give me some time to chew over what we've got. I promise I'll love it if you do.

I really never thought I'd say this, but there is way too much Star Wars coming out now.

It looks pretty certain that Wave 8 and the Gozanti are coming out by Christmas.

Imperial Assault is drowning us with expansion after expansion.

And I still want to get into Armada.

"There has been an awakening... Have you felt it?"

I think the awakening is FFG's new overlords, Asmodee and Disney.

Asmodee pushing releases for the bottom line.

Disney pushing releases for product alignment with their major initiatives.

:D

HURRY UP AND MAKE MORE... MORE... MORE FFG!!!

YOU BEEN DRAGGING YOUR ASSES MAKING A POOP-FEW RELEASES EACH YEAR... TIME TO GET BUSY!
