Boba, R2 and 3PO in campaign without Twin Shadows?

By PhantomFO, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Could anyone tell me whether these figures will be usable in the campaign without buying the full Twin Shadows expansion? I'm assuming they each come with their own side missions or agenda sets, but am unsure if those missions also require the tiles/units from Twin Shadows to bring them into play.

The side mission to earn 3PO and R2 requires Twin Shadows tiles. The Boba Fett agenda mission does not.

I might sub out Ig88 in Fly solo with boba fett

Yeah, there's no saying that you can't just add Boba or Kayn as an option for the Imperial player to choose from when selecting his Open Groups.

I guess the droid-bros would be more tricky, since you wouldn't have the requisite pieces to officially "earn" them in the campaign. But even then, would a house-rule be in order, where you can add them in place of another group (ie, Rebel Troopers)? That wouldn't seem broken to me, though it would be odd from a flavor/story perspective.

I've never played a campaign, but I have played a few different missions from the campaign and the expansions. If you just have buddies over for a game night or are hanging at the LGS, a competent Empire player can pick a mission, up the difficulty via threat and upgrades to his/your liking, and either side can play whatever allies they like. Let him throw in Boba as an open group. Ask him if you can add your favorite Rebel ally in return.

Or you could just kinda create your own mission and make it roughly similar to the mission designed for the actual card.

There actually is (sadly), RRG 18 says that the imperial player cannot use an ally (in this context a unique character) he hasn't gained as a reward in his open groups.

EDIT: Of course if all players agree you can ignore said rule.

That's kinda what I mean. If you're playing at your house then you're free to use your house's rules. Of course, anyone using house rules needs to be ready to deal with whatever consequences or ramifications come up because of those rules. But the purpose of these (and ALL) games is to have fun. So if it's more fun to use these characters in your campaign even though you don't have the tiles for them, then by all means have at it, IMHO.

It's obviously a different thing altogether for competitions and tournaments, where it is essential that everyone is playing with the same rules and expectations.

You shouldn't just give the Imperial player a free villain IMO since it's supposed to be a reward for spending influence and then winning a mission (or intimidating the Rebels into skipping one). I think an equitable house rule solution would be to allow them to unlock Fett, Somos, or any other future villain whose agenda mission they don't have the necessary tiles for in lieu of Vader/RGC/Weiss etc. upon completing THAT character's agenda mission. Ditto for the Rebels - win, say, Han's mission, take R2 & 3PO instead. It may not make much narrative sense, but at least it preserves the campaign's mechanical integrity.

Really though, you should just go ahead and buy Twin Shadows. :P The missions are super fun and much more thematic than those in the core IMO and the new heroes and units are great.

I still haven't even had time to run the core campaign with my gaming buds. I plan to make sure we enjoy playing that before expanding it further.

Woah. Is this indicated on the pack? Not that it matters for me, but people just buying core and then some ally/villain packs will probably be a bit dissappointed.

It is not indicated on the pack but it's on the insert rules. Both maps in the droid pick use Twin Shadows and one of the two maps on Boba do. Didn't but Kayn.

I wouldn't mess around. Get Twin Shadows, it's awesome.

I'm not looking to buy TS now, I want to finish the core campaign first (I'm currently up to the first side mission). But I was thinking of buying the Boba Fett expansion for csually playing skirmish. Do you need to have TS for the skirmish map, tokens, etc?

It was noted on both my Boba and R2 packs. On the back, there were two disclaimers in place of the normal one. "This pack is not a complete game, requires the core pack" and "This pack uses tiles from Twin Shadows Expansion" or something like that. In a red rectangle, pretty noticeable if you look longingly at every square centimeter of the packs, savoring the anticipation of opening them like I do.

I just got done painting Boba Fett. I forgot how crazy and mixed up his costume is. Yet, he's still cool.

Should skip the packs and get Twin Shadows 1st. New rules(weaken), new tiles, new missions, new Heroes, new bad guys, new loots, new command cards.

VS R2 & 3PO that you can't get to use as part of your heroes group, without Twin Shadows.
