Outrider and secondary weapons.

By herbaljoker, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Okay if the outrider has HLC equipped and receives the munitions failure crit. Does he lose all weapons, or does he go back to using his primary weapon?

He goes back to the primary turret. I asked Alex Davy about this some months ago. I believe it's in the new FAQ.

Thanks for the quick response. That's what I thought but my brother was trying to argue it, and it was his ship.

Munitions failure tells you to discard a secondary weapon. Assuming you only had one and you discard it, do you have a secondary weapon equipped anymore? What does the title say about that?

Read the first bit of the Outrider title card:

Discarding a secondary weapon means you don't have it equipped anymore.

That situation is actually used as an example of one of those few times a person may NOT want to land a critical on a ship.

An enemy ship pursuing the HLC Outrider is managing to stay within the safety of the R1 hole that the HLC can not fire into. Suddenly, that ship lands a face-up card on the YT-2400 which happens to be Munitions Failure and causes the HLC to be discarded; that in turn removes the Outrider title's effect from the game allowing the YT-2400 to use its primary weapon and that little ship that thought it was safe now suffers a 3 dice attack to the face. Oops.

Just to elaborate a little, as everyone has pretty much answered the question regarding this particular case.

A Munitions Failure card instructs you to: "Immediately choose 1 of your secondary weapon Upgrade cards and discard it." and the rulebook defines this as "Secondary weapon cards show the header “Attack:” as a reminder that a ship attacks with either its primary weapon or one of its secondary weapons."

So Munitions Failure would apply to any Upgrade card that features the Attack: header, which could be cannons, turrets, torpedoes, missiles, and illicits (currently only "Hot Shot" Blaster). Note the requirement isn't that the Upgrade card has a particular secondary weapon icon in the bottom left corner, it must have the Attack: header. So this excludes all bombs and other cards such as Chardaan Refit, Bomb Loadout and Extra Munitions.

The confusion comes from thinking that the HLC replaces the primary weapon. Which makes sense. Except in this game.

Basically, Dash bought an HLC, and rather than installing it properly, welded it on top of the main guns.

A Munitions Failure loosens the duct-tape, and the main-gun can now shoot unimpeded by the energy cells that were shoved down the barrels.

Sounds like a fair assessment of the situation. :D

That's the problem with duct tape. You buy the cheap plastic stuff and it just doesn't stand up to the rigors of space combat.

Meh - I'm very much a believer in the 2 item toolbox.

Duct tape for things that arent stuck but should be

WD40 for things that are stuck and shouldn't be.

if I'm feeling adventurous I'll add a pair of pliers as they double as tightener and a loosener

I agree but you need to get either the cloth duct tape or the metal version. The plastic stuff just doesn't hold up.

But duct tape is very much like the Force: It has a light side and a dark side, and it binds the galaxy together.
