NOVA Squadron Radio – Episode 31 “U.S. Nationls Review w/Jeff and Phil!”

By EvilEd209, in X-Wing

I agree too, I love the longer shows. It means I have more days worth of commute to work brightened up by x-wing poscasts.

I use it for yard work.

Same here. I work out sometimes to Nova Squadron Radio, or finish listening to them while I am cleaning out my garage or doing other work type chores. This weekend I did some painting at a local church and listened to this latest episode. Great times!

I enjoy the longer shows as long as they are not stuffed with meaningless filler, which I haven't seen yet at all from Ed and crew. There are a lot of great and lengthy discussions that need to be talked about though. Occasionally I'll immediately say "no, that's not right" and then another person on the show corrects the individual and whatnot. Other than that, solid job guys and keep up the good work! Also, I appreciate the interviews you guys have as they are always relevant to the state of the game and give other people better insight into some of the top notch players or to those that are vital to the development of the community.

I wanna do a drinking game for every time during an episode Chad says "alright or okay everybody". ;)

Would we get drunk even quicker if we changed the game to every time Ed says "at this juncture" ? :P

OK so if Ed and Chad have their telltale call signs, what do Kris Sean and myself say repeatedly? I'm sure there's something! :P

P.S. Chad's "ok everybody" before reading a card has now become the defacto calling card for the podcast!

Dr. MajorJuggler, the thing I hear you say the most is probably "I haven't run the numbers on that yet" or something to that effect. Get to work! *cracks whip* :P

Ah, but seriously though, it is good to have some familiar phrases because at certain points they set the tempo of the show...especially Chad's "ok everybody"... I internalize this as "I better listen, something good is about to come up".

Okay, I've never listened to Nova Squadron radio once before... In fact, this is the first time I've even opened a thread about them on Reddit or FFG, but there is no way in hell that dude's name is "Phil Horny"...

But don't fret, my wife also didn't believe me. Though, she's also crazy enough to marry into it and not make us change it.

Ed's last name "Horne" certainly gets en equal share of humor, haha.

every use of the words "dice," "efficiency," or "numbers"

Sean says "I don't care about winning" or "back in Omaha...".

Looks like another episode to listen to the News segment and then drop off after it gets into the tournament reports. I'm sick of hearing about the same boring lists fighting the same boring lists. Maybe next year's meta will be more varied.

I thought that winning list was stylish as hell.

Sean says "you know, so then you have..." It's how he lets listeners know that his 5 minute long tangent is going to be interrupted by a smaller sub-tangent. ;)

Kris seems very hard to understand sometimes when he is on the show. I cannot tell if it is headset or something else.

Toqtamish -

I try to bring Kris' levels up so that he can be heard... but I think sometimes he still trails off some. I will do a better job bringing his levels up in future shows!

Thanks for the heads up!

I would guess that it is my mumbly, northern accent rather than my levels...

More seriously one of the reasons I have been away from the show (other than my lack of play...) has been hardware issues.

I think that I have it fixed now and am back Streaming and hopefully will be able to makeing a contribution to the show for as long as you guys put up with me :)

Thanks

Kris

There are sentences Sean speaks where, swear to god, every third word is "y'know". Bob can you run the numbers and calculate a "hosting efficiency" based on "y'know" averages to podcast length?

I enjoy hearing a run-through on tournament games from start to finish - those episodes are fun and interesting. I will agree with other posters that the podcast can sometimes be excessive in length, though. It would be good if Ed, as host, could edit the recording or steer the discussion back on track a little so we don't hear, as an example, Sean rambling about BBBBZ for over an hour again.

Honestly Juggler, the thing you say the most is jousting efficiency or run the numbers but for the most part when you go all mathwing my brain tunes right out.

I'm from the great white north too so don't think it is your accent. I was born in Edmonton. Probably the hardware issue.

Funny, that is when I stop daydreaming and really tune in.

I don't think you're thinking of the same North.

I thought he lived in Canada too.

I hope this doesn't come off sounding critical, but as a rather new player with little experience at a major championship like Nationals or Worlds, I would have liked to hear you and your guests talk a bit less about blow-by-blow recounting of games, and lots more about what the "experience" of going to these events are like. How do you prepare? What kinds of things to expect? Dealing with positive and negative player experiences? As well as general thoughts/feelings about this event vs other's you've been too.

I think the biggest take-away I've had in listening to you these last 8ish months is that when I hear you talk about how many store tournaments, regional championships, and beyond you've collectively been too - I think there is a lot of knowledge beyond what token you've taken that can be shared with people like me who are trying super hard to build a local community bigger than 3 people. I'd love to hear about what these events are like, and how you prepare and manage your time at them - as well as what things you love about them, and what things annoy you to death.

Those are the kinds of things that I'd love to hear about to help me and my wife prepare for next year's events =)

He might, I don't know, but I was placing his accent as coming from northern Britain, although I will admit I am unaware of regional variations in Canadian accents that might have similar sounds. Kris can obviously correct me if I'm wrong.

Sean says "I don't care about winning" or "back in Omaha...".

Sometimes I wonder if Sean doesn't have some insecurity issues about how well he plays. He always caveats his run downs with something like this, or "I just wanted to show people something" or "I was just experimenting" or "the dice were bad" or "it is an old man list, not necessarily a good list" or something.

It's ok. You are the TO man. That is your strength, and it still seems you are a pretty good player even without having dedicated as much time to it.

I think this is very true, there's more to a tournament than the ships. and you guys touch on it, but how about alittle more info on your leagues and what exactly goes into them? we hear what you fly, but very little information about league night and the overall league structure.

Was Major Juggler saying "Deathtrain" when discussing a recent try-out match against TIEs and a Punisher?

I am from Wigan, a small ex-mining town in the North West of England, I then spent 12 years based in various parts of Scotland with the Royal Air Force and I now live in Canada.

So everybody is correct to some degree :)

Kris

Oops. Good question. I might have called him the wrong thing. I haven't listened to the episode yet. I obviously meant this guy:

deathrain.png

DeathTrain... must be from some other future expansion. :D

Or he is some awesome Decepticon...

In Ahnuld voice: "You just bought a ticket on the Deathtrain." (large weapon fires repeatedly).

If I was a heavy bomber pilot, I would totally dig the callsign Deathtrain.

Or he is some awesome Decepticon...

Ha. That was my first thought too.

Well he could be Astrotrain's less useful brother, instead of transporting them across the galaxy he just explodes whenever they board...
