Waiting for September 4th.....
Idk. I get to play some X-Wing until then
Eyup...well, sorta. I'll be playing MGSV from the 1st onwards. That'll help ease the pain of waiting and wondering if I'm even waiting in the right spot. But yeah...I hear ya.
Yet to try out my Outrider
Got an ordered Millennium Falcon on the way
So plenty to keep busy with. Still feeling an overwhelming sense of
yawn
Which is odd cause I'm usually so cheerful.
OK
So what has me bummed out?
I'm excited about Episode VII, and will likely avoid this forum until I've seen the film during December. If there are New Order Ties and Resistance X-Wings, I know I'd want to get them rather than the Original Trilogy ones as I like the Black and Orange X-Wing better, and the turreted Tie looks awesome too. Hope the Tie Shuttle gets a model too. Should there be a new starter, I'd get it despite having just bought the starter set for this game only a few weeks ago.
In fact, I'm sticking to Rebel freighters, and enough Ties to match their points, to save money for the newer toys. Besides, X-Wing will remain. Any "new" game will be for Episode VII, perhaps with FAQ's and Epic rules added to make it tempting to the hard core Original Trilogy players.
So it's not that.
When I first saw X-Wing I wanted to "look before I leapt" and I visited the store to look at all the models. Many I'd never heard of so did a Google search and found a website called Wookieepedia. Suddenly I was hooked and soon found myself looking over the Timeline to find many things I never knew since my Star Wars knowledge was limited to six movies.
What I read was that after Endor the Rebel Alliance became the New Republic and Empire stayed the Empire. By 19 BBY the Galactic Civil War ended officially, but there was still the New Republic and Galactic Empire. Was interesting reading, and I accepted it as existing Star Wars lore.
Knowing that Force Awakens was only thirty years later, I wasn't surprised to see Stormtroopers, Tie fighters, Star Destroyers and X-Wings. Albeit with a new look; some more new than others. But I was surprised by the names: New Order and Resistance.
Now the New Order wasn't an issue really. Emperor and Darth Vader dead, the Empire needed a new order to survive. But "Resistance?"
Resistance?
What happened to the New Republic? Am I to believe that in thirty years the Rebellion continues to be a rebellion but with a different name?
This was the first real tangible indication that the end of the EU I'd heard about was true, and not just panicking fans. Perhaps the rumoured "Aftermath" would explain all and provide all the answers.
Went to Amazon and typed in "Star Wars Aftermath".
Expecting an Encyclopedia Star Wars Galactica containing thirty years worth of rewritten Star Wars lore I found......
.......a story book!
WHAT!!!?
A little novel!?
Sigh
Is Star Wars to become the new Games Workshop? I know the big businesses want to milk the Star Wars cash cow until the end of time but howay man!!! Throw us a fragging bone here!
I don't want to spend billions on novels by a multitude of authors who claim to be telling Star Wars history between Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens, but are I'm fact just telling stories about this pilot, that planet and a mothers internal struggle as she seeks to spend time with her son but needs to help a Rebel.
So I guess I'm more bummed out about the utter annihilation of Star Wars "history" without anything concrete to replace it. Instead there'll be a library of pointless novels when all that's needed is how did we get from VI to VII. I'm not against writers doing novels around this, but please can those of us who don't own a library just have one encyclopedic book.
Feeling a bit better now that's out.
Yeah, as far as I'm concerned post ROTJ SW was the Thrawn trilogy. Everything else was just LIES LIES LIES. I'm glad the bloated mess of the EU was ditched. Now we can start anew with a history that makes sense without dropping moons on wookiees and other crap.
Also no one is crying for the 70s/80s comics, so I ain't crying for the 90s/00s novels.
Edited by GrimmyVDon't get me wrong, I'm happy to see the Yuzzong Vong.....or however it's spelt....gone but the New Republic, Empire, Chiss etc was great reading. Even if it was just Wookieepedia

New Republic at least is still a thing. It's been mentioned in previews of the new novels. So it exists if nothing else for a while in the post Endor timeline.
In the upcoming game Star Wars Battlefront (which is considered new canon), there will be a day-one DLC called Battle of Jakku. This is the desert planet seen in the Force Awakens. Roughly one year following the battle of endor, NEW REPUBLIC and EMPIRE forces clash at Jakku. The outcome of the battle is unknown, but since we see the remains of both a Star Destroyer and a Super Star Destroyer we might assume the New Republic wins this fight. One might further speculate that Imperial forces retreat for some time, since roughly 30 years later we see the New Republic no longer exists and the First Order seems ascendant. One might assume that the First Order smashed the New Republic and is continuing its campaign of galactic re-conquest while the remains of the New Republic, now called the Resistance, carry on the fight. Like a swinging pendulum, the balance of power is.

Lucas big win with the studio when Star Wars first came into existence was to keep the merchandising rights, he's been milking the Star Wars cash cow since 1977. Welcome to Star Wars.
Become... Yeeesh, Games Workshop is but a padawan of milking it compared to the Sith Lord Lucas.

I won't post links for obvious reasons but, while returning to Fantasy Flight Games my browser flashed up "Leaked Photos" and I now have seen it myself.
So as not to upset anyone I won't comment further on that. Just now I don't feel so tardy to the party.
A question I've had since we first heard about the New Order and the Resistance... We've all been assuming the New Order = carryover Galactic Empire, and Resistance = carry over Rebellion.
Which is the likely scenario. But, it's not the only plausible thing. EP1-3 shows how the Republic (good guys) morphed into the Empire (bad guys, at least from the heroes point of view). EP4-6 shows the Rebellion (good guys) going against the Empire (bad guys).
So, in the 30 years since Endor, is it out of the realm of possibility that the Rebellion (good guys) has indeed "freed" the galaxy from the empire, just to be corrupt itself and become the bad guys? As for the TIE fighters belonging to central government force - that makes sense to me due to the scale of things - Sienar systems is equipped to supply TIE fighters to the government. Incom is not equipped to supply X wings to that large of a force.
And then the Resistance (good guys) could be the folks banding together against the corruption the Rebellion brought, staying true to the thoughts and beliefs they fought for during the Rebellion. As such, this is where Leia and Han would be since Leia is an idealist, and Han is in love with her. This then explains why the TIEs are chasing the Falcon.
What I read was that after Endor the Rebel Alliance became the New Republic and Empire stayed the Empire. By 19 BBY the Galactic Civil War ended officially, but there was still the New Republic and Galactic Empire.
19 ABY.
Look at it this way.
All the previous "canon" of Star Wars in the Expanded Universe was a convoluted mess of things. There were like 3 different realities with multiple timelines within them. Stuff was constantly contradicting itself left and right because there was no unified story.
This new canon they have introduced, the purpose is twofold. One, to lighten the amount of stuff one needs to read to get into the Expanded Universe of Star Wars, to simplify it and two, to unify the story. All these new novels (there will be more novels, Aftermath itself is supposed to be a trilogy) are supposed to be the one true story set between episodes 6 and 7. There will not be anything else made to contradict said story. There won't be alternate timelines where Luke becomes the Emperor or some stupid crap like that or the Emperor's spirit living on and possessing a clone of his body. Good.
That is one positive thing. So far I hadn't read anything contradictory, so my brain has been spared those horrors.
Oh and I did mean 19 ABY. Good catch

Dark Empire was a horrible. I'm actually pretty glad of the EU order 66 even though it wipes KOTOR and Cade Skywalker from existence...

Sorry, I'm gonna have to intervene here. The only reason the old cannon was a "convoluted mess", was because the Clone Wars cartoon, despite claiming to be adhering to the already established EU, actually did no such thing. They messed up Ventress massively, they added Anakin having a padawan (weird how that never comes up in the movies, you'd think it would have *some* effect on his character), completely re-writes Mandalorians (for the worse). The list goes on and on. But that is a mess only as far as the Clone Wars period is concerned.
Past Endor everything is really straightforward - the Republic retakes Coruscant (eventually), fighting off Sate Prestage (the first substitute of the Emperor), then Ysanne Isard (wannabe Empress, but not really). Isard is essnetially the first Imperial "warlord", i.e. someone trying to consolidate the old Empire (or what's left of it) against the New Republic. Spoiler: she fails. The Republic then faces numerous warlords (former Moffs and Grand Admirals, wanting to carve out a peace of the galaxy for themselves. Then Thrawn shows up and for the first time the Republic is on the back foot. Afterwards it's Dark Empire, the reborn Emperor and Luke going Dark Side (it's actually a pretty cool and interesting story - especially considering it's amongst the first pieces of the EU written). Luke sets off to re-create the Jedi Order, the New Republic and the Empire make peace and everything sorta settles down. Han & Leia have kids, Luke has a kid - and they're all pretty neat characters in their own right. Then the Vong happened and there's plenty of really fascinating things in those series - particularly the ones written by Aaron Alston (Rebel dawn ? series, I can never remember the name). And after the Vong it's the Second Galactic Civil War. And that's, for me, one of the best pieces of Star Wars out there. For one, Jacen Solo was Anakin Skywalker done right. You completely feel that he's powerful (and scary powerful), and you see WHY he's turning to the dark side. It's a lot more believable and interesting than whiny Anakin in the prequels. And instead of Luke stopping him - it's his own sister. And the Second Civil War (initially), pits Han & Leia & Wedge against their kids, against Luke and the Jedi. It's pretty **** interesting.
The EU was never a mess, it's actually the reason why I love Star Wars. It's that there is this ridiculously rich background to *everything* happening in the movies. If you only see the films - you know Han is a smuggler. You read the books about him - and you see about his time at the Imperial Academy, about him meeting Chewie, about him becoming a smuggler. Seriously, without the EU . . . Star Wars is just another sci-fi, for me it's always been the EU that makes the universe so rich. Because everything is explained and given a background.
There are things that suck, no doubt about that. I was never a fan the Black Fleet Crisis or the Ssi-ruuvi, but those are pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The last books were pretty weak, imo, and I didn't bother with them (Fate of the Jedi was its name, I believe). I think the video games do some nasty things to the canon and have pretty much ignored them (Zahn & Starkiller, if you want specifics, are downright lame in my mind, but that's just my view). Overall though, the EU is fantastic and pretty **** cohesive - considering the amount of books, comics, games - from a variety of authors - for near 30 years. Which is really impressive - and the quality, for the most part, is top-notch.

Well said. If this was boardgamegeek.com, I'd give you some geek gold for that post.
For me, I think I'm just going to enjoy both timelines. Star Wars Legends (as the title goes) is aptly named -- these are the legends of Star Wars. These are the stories we'll hold dear to our hearts. These are the stories we will remember as we watch the original trilogy, imagining all the back stories that have been woven throughout the EU over time.
But it was too big. So I'm open to adding this new timeline to my enjoyment of Star Wars. To me, I will phase in and out of both timelines for the rest of my life as I enjoy Star Wars. One does not replace the other -- they both exist and I will enjoy them both.
(But I think the story behind The Force Unleashed was pretty neat, again, as an alternate beginning to the Alliance.) ![]()
The EU started off so well with Zahn's books, the Kevin J Anderson incorporated nonsense from really bad comics and at that point I was hard pressed to find a single storyline post Anderson's Jedi Academy books that weren't awful. Some authors snuck stuff in before that timeline that was okay. But after that? Ugh.
Yuuzahn Vong? Uggghhhhh
So long garbage, don't let the space door hit you in the ass on the way out.

"In 2000, Lucas Licensing appointed Leland Chee to create a continuity tracking database referred to as the "Holocron". As with every other aspect having to do with the overall story of Star Wars, the Holocron follows the canon policy that has been in effect for years.
The Holocron is divided into five levels (in order of precedence): G-canon, T-canon, C-canon, S-canon, and N-canon."
A five level tier of canon... doesn't sound very unified to me. I'm glad now that there's one story group making sure everything fits and doesn't contradict each other.

It's not day 1. SWBF Release is Nov 17th, BoJ is Dec 8 (Dec 1 with SWBF pre-order).

There is a five-tear canon level, yeah. But these tiers are only there to settle contradictions. For example, as the Clone Wars is a higher-tier canon level than the "Obsession" comics and the Tartakovsky animated series - the version of Asajj from that series is considered the canon and the ending of Obsession is considered defunct. Which is sad, cause it was infinitely better than CW, but I digress.
You're looking at it the wrong way. You think that since there are five tiers, it must mean that there are five different universes. It's not the case - as someone who's played **** near every SW game, read a substantial amount of the comics & books - trust me, contradictions are few and far inbetween and what few exist are usually retconned quite neatly, without having to write-off or ignore something. You think that because the Emperor was reborn, it must mean that it was a super silly re-start of the universe and that it skewed-off into an alternate reality with 30 years of stories. Nah, dawg, the Emperor had a secret facility - a failsafe (as you would, considering the dude was **** near omnipotent), which needed time to be triggered. It totally makes sense that the biggest villain in the universe wouldn't simply be defeated by being thrown in a shaft by his half-dead apprentice. Plus World Devestators & E-Wings.

You assume a lot about what I am thinking. That's annoying as we do not know one another in any way outside of the posts on these forums.
The only way I'm looking at it is that there was inconsistencies that required a five tier canon to be created to fix the issues in the past. With Disney cutting out the majority of previous canon, it allows the story group an easier time of keeping all the new stories consistent and free of continuity errors.
The reason the old EU was a convoluted mess was because it was huge and old. It is impossible for hundreds of content creators to spend 30 years creating something that big and not have some contradictions, errors, bad stories, etc...
The reason the new canon is tight and coherent is because it is new and there isn't much of it yet.
When the EU first started, they made serious efforts to keep it internally coherent, Zahn got boxes of comics and RPG sourcebooks to use as references when he started writing the Thrawn trilogy, but eventually it got away from them and they had to create the multi-tier canon system to reconcile the contradictions. The very fact that they did that shows that they were still committed to maintaining as tight and coherent a universe as was possible.
The NewCanon is still very young. Its only at the level the old EU was at when Zahn began writing. Thinking that in 20-30 years the NewCanon will not be as convoluted as the old EU became, with as many bad stories and lame characters is naivete on a massive scale.

It's a good thing none of us here expects it to always be neat and consistent then.
It's honestly just nice to be able to jump in at the beginning of the new canon for someone young like myself rather than having a backlog of 30 years of content that barely interested me in the first place (tried reading the old comics when they put them on marvel unlimited, it was painful).
