Obi-Wan Kenobi hiding on Tatooine

By 3998, in X-Wing Off-Topic

You know that one episode of The Big Bang Theory where Raiders of the Last Ark is ruined for the nerds by making obvious a plot weakness in the movie? I recently had a similar moment regarding Star Wars (I refuse to call it Episode IV):
At the beginning, Obi-Wan Kenobi is hiding on Tatooine. He even went so far as to change his name from Obi-Wan to Ben, but did nothing about the “Kenobi”-Part??? Kenobi doesn´t seem to be the Star Wars equivalent to “Smith”, so why the hell would he keep his last name?

This random thought was brought to you by way too many hours in the office.

You think that's odd

Ben Kenobi was clearly known on Tatooine.

Tatooine had a number of Stormtroopers.

Darth Vader, while flying over Tatooine never "felt his presence" and never once got curious that, on the planet of his birth, there was a kid called Luke Skywalker and a hermit called Ben Kenobi?

Blame Lucas. For some reason Anakin had to be from Tatooine. <_<

I find it funny that people are treating Tatooine like it was a small settlement.

It is an entire planet.

I'm reminded of that tourist video where a person asks where the traveler is from and they say X and then the response is "I've been there, do you know Bob from X?"

Obi-wan wasn't hiding on Tatooine, he was using Luke as bait to kill (or maybe redeem) Vader. Why else would he keep Luke's last name as Skywalker?

Mind...blown

Skywalker is a common name on tatooine but it is stupid giving luke to his aunt and uncle given Anakin knows they exist.

Vader may of thought the kids dead but the emperor knew better and would surely have had agents looking.

The EU says tatooine was like degobah strong in the dark side so it masked their presence.

The important question is why were you on enough anaesthetics to be capable of watching BBT without eye- and ear-bleeding.

Surely strong in the dark side wouldn't mask their presence to someone strong in the dark side?

Unless the dark side is dark even to darksiders no matter how strong the dark side is in them......

He was on Tatooine to protect Luke and because he knew Anakin would not return there. This was addressed in the recent issues of Star Wars.

Star Wars (I refuse to call it Episode IV):

Why? It has been Episode IV since 1981?

I was of the opinion that the movie was originally named "Star Wars" and renamed to Episode IV to better fit after the abominations that are the prequels.

Wikipedia seems to agree: Star Wars (later retitled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope)[4][5] is a 1977 American epic[discuss]space opera film[...]

Funny you say that. I was under the impression that the good people here would have an above average inclination to like the series.

Well, you are wrong, it was retitled in 1981. ESB and ROTJ have always had the numbers, I first heard about a triple trilogy in 1984 or thereabouts. The droids being common to all episodes. Mark Hamill is on record in the eighties about talking with George Lucas about doing a follow-up with a passing of the torch, handing over of Excalibur in about 25 years or so, which would've put it around 2010.

Can't think of a reason why they would, unless you're implying that everyone on this forum is slow.

Well, if you buy the latest continuity (the Kenobi novel), Kenobi is a common enough surname on Tatooine that Ben didn't stand out.

Everything sounds convoluted to me. More and more invention to fix what was flawed in the first place. I find it best not to dig too much otherwise it starts unraveling.

This entire conversation reminds me of...

The real quetion is why Vader didnt pick up that Leia was his daughter while she was being interrogated by him. Cue the EU retconned explanations

Because there was a eclipsed visage on the dark side of the force which caused a necrophantasm of what once was without regarding the chosen one's transmigration into the depths of fate.

Words!

I have come to the grudging acknowledgement that the Star Wars triology does have some quite substantial logic holes, but I do not think that this has to be one.

Vader was not looking for his daughter. He did not even know he had a daughter. Memories and thoughts of his previous life may have only re-surfaced after he felt Obi-Wan's presence on the first Deathstar. Like how you don't notice some things for a long time until they are brought into focus by some events.

003998 and your questions have been answered mostly. He wouldnt have detected Kenobi because he was doing nextt o nothing with the force. Luke w as detected after ep IV alot because he was using the force all the time. On the 2nd Death Star Luke almost fully used force cloak / stealth. If Derp Vader and Sidious hadnt messed with Lukes head he would have used it perfectly. It why Vader cant see Luke even though he is in front of him some times. I am talking about the scene before Luke flips out. I bring this ability up because for all we know Ben and Yoda were using those abilities or subversions of it to hide from the Empire.

If I had the power to change any one thing about SW it would be to not have Luke and Leia as twin siblings. Worse reveal ever. Why did Lucas do that!?!?!

Random Stormtrooper: "Hey Darth, we heard a bunch of blokes down at the local choke n puke on Tatooine talking about an old hermit named Ben Kenobi. Do you think he might be related to Obi Wan Kenobi?"

Vader: "Don't be stupid man! Why would Obi Wan go to the last place I'd think of looking for him and change only half his name?"

Random Stormtrooper: "Perhaps because it's the last place you'd look for him and you'd not believe he'd still be called Kenobi. Here's another coincidence for you, there's some boy called Luke Skywalker! What are the odds there'd be someone else with your surname living with your cousins?"

Random Droid: "3720 to 1"

Vader: "Don't be stupid man! My surname is Vader not Skywalker."

There was a time when I'd believe Darth Vader wasn't that stupid.

Then I watched the prequels.

Even Jar Jar was smarter.
