Raider Repaint - 181st's new home

By Burninnapalm, in X-Wing

So after looking at my Raider's lifeless engines for an entire game, I decided to spruce them up a little bit. once the engines were done, I just had to induct it into the 181st.

Paint requisition form B212-C has not been filed for this vessel. You have some explaining to do!

nice repaint!

So when will we get the Royal Raider paint scheme ;)

So when will we get the Royal Raider paint scheme ;)

That... might take some time (and money... had a hard enough time justifying the raider to my wife. Luckily the tie advanced fix sold her on picking up a copy, as she mainly plays empire ;) )

The only issue with doing a Royal Raider I can foresee is getting it the lines to work and the panelings to not be so... monochrome... I loath monochrome... always have to dry brush something.

So when will we get the Royal Raider paint scheme ;)

Yeah... when?!

Very nice job indeed! I've been meaning to paint my engines since I opened the box and saw the big, black void... What colours did you use? And was it dry brushed, wet pallet, or what?

Probably.

Also great work on the raider!!

Agreed! Those engines look great! I'd like to do something similar but I have no idea what I'm doing so any help would be appreciated.

What colors/paints/technique did you use to do the engines? Looks very good.

I assume you masked and airbrushed the blood stripes, correct? What color/paint type there too?

Love the engines, great job there.

Looks great! I must know how you did the engines. It was the first thing I said when I opened mine that the engines needed something.

I'll say your taste in web comics cancels your stripes.

But that engine glow? Oh my that engine glow :swoon:

For Colours I used, they were the $0.50 Acrylic paints from walmart. just white (Apple Barrel 20403 white) and blue (Folk Art 401 true blue), and mixed them to different shades for the layers. For the outer layer I used 3 parts blue with 1 part white. and then for the center I used equal parts white and blue. I then did a dry brush of the lighter blue up the sides of the engine to give it that natural tappering for the glow. I then took my paint bush and put a dot of white in the center, let it dry under a fan for 30 seconds, and then dry brush it out from there. Ive learned from my 40k days that GW paint is just too expensive for customized colors for the amount you get, and the cheap Acrylic pants from walmart work just was well at a much better bargan (plus they have a higher shelf life than most model paint too)

As for the Blood Stripes were not airbrushed. I wish I had a airbrush... but those are out of my price range. You were right about them being masked, but then I did 8 coats of a a secondary mix (1 part AB 20404 Black, 3 parts AB 21469 Flag Red) and then I took 3 parts of that mixture and mixed it with 3 parts of straight AB 21469 Flag Red to get the dark red look. but those were just wet painted on. The reason for 8 coats is the grey kept showing through as it dried. and it needed a more vibrant appeal.

I debating if I should stripe the bottem solar array or not. While the 181st has just the 2 solar arrays painted... they dont have the weird "3rd nipple" that the raider has... Looking at it from the side, they stripe would show up, but i think it might be too much

I'll say your taste in web comics cancels your stripes.

And thank you! I find web comics are a good way to pass the time between coats.

I wish I had a airbrush... but those are out of my price range.

Just a FYI... I picked up an airbrush at Mendards for $12. I already had an air compressor, and I'm sure the brush isn't super high quality. But if you already have a compressor, that might be something to look at.

Edit: Oh and I agree about the walmart paints. That's pretty much all I've ever used and I get really good results with them. I'm sure GW or vajello are better but I've never had anyone look at something I painted and said 'wow that's a killer job, but the paints you use suck'.

Alas, I do not have a compressor or a Menards in my vicinity, although I will have to keep an eye out for one next time I head out west to visit my folks.

This needs a half cloaked paintjob to attack with phantoms.

Well done.

Good job buddy! Those engines are very well done. I didn't know you could paint so well. I might have to have you do mine for me whenever I get around to getting it. My corvette really needs to face off against this soon.

If you are considering an airbrush, here's a good tip: Hobby Lobby. The always have a 40% off one item discount coupon (search web for "40% off Hobby Lobby" to get one to print). Use this to get their $40 airbrush for $24. Lather, rinse and repeat for a compressor, or just buy the compressed air cans (those get expensive after a while, but if you are just doing limited stuff, its great). Another compressor idea is Harbor Freight. They have cheap industrial compressors, and with one simple $1 attachment, fit your airbrush just fine. Even Home Depot and Lowe's have compressors fairly cheap, like $40. No need for a $200 Iwata or Tamiya compressor, when the others work just fine (and even come with built in pressure regulators).

As for paints, I use Vallejo Model Air or Game Air, straight from the bottles or diluted just a little with their thinner. If not that, Tamiya paints work great diluted with rubbing alcohol or distilled water. I wouldn't use craft paints in an airbrush because of the thickness of the pigments, and GW/Citadel paints are too expensive for that.

Good luck!

I will have to look into the air compressors at Lowes... im there 40 hours a week as it is.

as for the hobby lobby, again i do not have one of those in my area. So for now, an air brush is something that is not practicle for me. im sure I could get much softer glow from the engines with one, and will consider it if I ever have to do one again.

nice repaint!

Looking at the way the quote is spelled, it's more likely to be from Fel's Wrath...

As a bit of an amateur I'm curious, how did you get that cloudy effect on the engine exhaust?

A quick, simple solution I found for my Raider's engine was to draw a circle in Word, color it using the shading tools so it was light blue around the edge and fading to white in the middle, size it to fit the back of the engine port, and print it out on an adhesive label. A quick snip with scissors and it at least looks like there's something going on in there.
