How does it work? Commands

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

So this is my first time adding in editing and snappy remarks so let me know how I did.

As always, I would love to get feedback.

Why on earth would you do that to your ships and command dials? :/

Also, if you're going to do a tutorial-style video, you may want to make it far more structured. After some 3 minutes of rambling I checked to see that the video runs over 20 minutes and stopped watching.

Going over the timing for each command and how they work is going to take time. I am not sure I rambled. I was going over information that gets asked pretty regularly within the first 3 minutes.

I welcome some ideas on how to fix issues. I can't promise I can fix everything due to my limitations with using my phone and Bluetooth headphones to record. Other than that, suggestions are appreciated.

Please allow me to make the following suggestions:

1) If you don't do so already, speak from a pre-prepared script. Strip out anything that isn't pertinent, including personal opinion, when explaining the actual rules. If you wish, have a second video that discusses strategies with the commands or your personal feelings about their usage

2) Use overlays to guide players. It would be helpful if you had an overlay indicating the phase as you demo the game (e.g. ship activation phase) that corresponds to the phases listed in the rulebook

3) Keep the video brief. I don't see why it should take longer than 5 minutes to explain the rules for commands. Use a separate video to discuss strategy

4) Maybe it's just me, but I'm not fond of seeing custom painted ships in tutorial videos. It can be confusing for new players, especially those (like me) who are new to miniatures gaming. They may be left wondering if they bought a different product. Same applies to tokens/cards and other items

When I get home I'll watch the rest of the video so I may have more suggestions for you.

Hope that helps.

I am not sure how I would cut the video back. . . How would you sum up the timing, effects, and provide an example in under 5 minutes for 4 seperate commands? That is what 1 in 15 seconds to rapidly lay out the wording, timing and example per command not to mention I need to introduce what it is I am doing, recap what was done and ask people to like comment and subscribe. 5 minutes may be pushing it a bit.

Personally, I think 5 minutes of video would be confusing to people. I would have to talk really fast and I would have to cut out a lot of content that gives the whole thing context.

As for overlays, I do pop up sections and pictures of what I am talking about as I go. For instance when I bring up the repair command, I actually have the effects of said command on the side so people can see what I am talking about.

This one was not fully scripted but none of my videos are 100% scripted. I never learned how to script things and I usually just have a vague outline either written out or in my head. This one was in my head because I knew what order of things to cover. Some things come to me as I go along.

I enjoy painting my models. Since the shape, bases, and silhouette of the ships don't change much, I am not sure how it is relevant. Should I specify every segment that I painted ships? I don't think I am going to go out and but 2 more VSD's, Assault Frigates, Gladiators, etc though I know my FLGS and FFG would love me for it.

Still not sure what the issue was with the command dials. . . I show them pretty well during my Corseceng review.

Spitballing - Would it be preferable to have 4x 5min videos, one on each Command, then?

Label them as 1 of 4, etc...

Otherwise, each video should be self contained, and not self-referential. ( I shouldn't need to watch a review to see you're doing things different)...

And if you want them to be "professional" feeling, then you should use as much out-of-the-box items as possible... I know you havn't done it, but I have seen a tutorial video where people were moving VSDs around with a shortened 0-1-2 maneuver tool... You're showcasing for ==new== people to understand, and the occasional player to get greater understanding - so things should be OOTB so they can immediately see that they can do the same.

I have to admit as a Armada player I had a bit of trouble recognizing your Grey/Black and white Space whale. So I agree with others use out of the box non-modified game pieces for videos to reduce new player confusion. I can't watch the full video due to being at work but when I get off I'll take another look and provide feedback.

I think this video shows marked improvement. Slowing the pace of speaking is good, the on-screen images and texts are good/fun, and the sound is also much better. I'm amazed that you're doing this with the equipment that you have.

As to people's comments/criticisms here, I do think it might be worthwhile to cut back on the examples where you're rolling dice in cases when they might not be pertinent.

Regarding painted models, I think you can get away with saying that you painted/modified them.

Guess I better redo the video. . .
