We want to buy acrylic templates and tokens from FFG... don't we?

By dewbie420, in X-Wing

I started playing X-Wing back in March of this year, so I'm still new but I seem to be wearing through my 1st core set's templates. I've learned to paint the edges with 2 coats and it definitely makes em last longer. Also I've played in a few tournaments just to win the acrylic pieces. I've bought every expansion and playmats... and dice packs- and I think there are many others that feel this way:

I WILL PAY $29.95 FOR "DELUXE" SET OF TEMPLATES & TOKENS.

Please, FFG... make this and people WILL buy it. Am I right?

Considering the serious cranial injuries suffered as a result of falling sky material when FFG announced that only their official playmats were tournament legal, I would be careful what you wish for.

Yes!

I've been using the same core set templates for nearly 2 years and they're still holding up fine without any sort of modification. I've seen other people's though that are falling apart, what are you people doing to your templates?

That said, it seems like templates are the kind of thing they'd rather keep for tournament prizes, though they have started making playmats for Netrunner, where as they used to be the domain of Netrunner prize support(the ones for sale obviously lack the "X Tournament" details stuff on them to distinguish the prizes more), so maybe it's something that could happen.

I certainly think it is a missed opportunity for them, as the playmats were, and I would not be surprised to see them offer them in the future. As it stands right now, there are a lot of good third party options for a lot of these things, and many of use these. I for one would like to see some good acrylic bomb tokens.

There are nearly a half dozen 3rd party makers of acrylic templates and tokens. I don't see the need for FFG to actually make their own. I rather them concentrate on getting us ships in a timely manner!

Please, FFG... make this and people WILL buy it. Am I right?

I'd buy it, but I don't think FFG will make it for a couple reasons.

First, because it would dilute the value of their prize packs. Being able to show up to a game with official focus, evade, cloak, shield and stress tokens says something. It says you have been to a lot of tournaments and have done well.

If they just sell them, then that goes away. Now for some people that isn't a good reason, and for some it's a good reason to sell them. But I think FFG values the competitive community enough to want to keep those things special.

Second, I don't think FFG wants to get into the business of selling tokens. There may not be much of a mark up on them so they wouldn't generate much profit.

If you want some that aren't official then go to Applied Perspectives. For $30 you can get 10 focus, 10 evade and 10 stress tokens. For another $10 you can get 10 shield tokens (although the mirrored ones look so killer they're worth the extra $5 IMO)

But what then would they give out as prizes?

I for one agree with OP. I don't like many of the designs third party people make (though I am pretty fond of AP's "deluxe" line, those look great). I'd love it if FFG released their official ones, because I like the original designs. Especially those shield tokens!

Anything they want to! I think the medals that they were giving were cooler than the acrylics anyhow!

Not to mention, when I see the acrylics in use, half the time the guy has bought them from the winner on Ebay! So they dont have much meaning to the guy that won them in the first place and the buyer has more money than sense...

I used to think this. And then it seemed like everyone had all sorts of official FFG stuff, including folks that barely knew the core rules of the game. At that point I stopped caring about the official FFG tokens. They're a status symbol, they're not a indication of skill. And this is coming from a guy who's won every single set of tokens, at least once.

I thought about that too...

Maybe "brand" the templates with certain logo or design that makes them look different, so the prize-acrylics stand out. Even custom personalized templates for prizes. The winner fills out a form and recieves the cool acrylics in the mail (like ordering dogtags or personalized mailing labels). I would play hard to win THOSE!

This is also a good point.

I don't see them as trophies or prizes or whatever. If I can find them for about $1 or less per token, I'll happily snag em on eBay. I had a set of 5 Concentrate Fire and 5 Navigate tokens for Armada before I had ever played my first game.

I won a set of 6 original Focii, two sets of proton/proxy mines and 8 original shields. Thats it. The rest (including two ions, two cloaks, six stress, and a whole bunch of other crap I can't be bothered to think of now) I bought online. Not even counting the 20+ third party acrylics.

I just like high-quality game components. And I hate cardboard.

Or that you have a lot of money and visited ebay.

Sure, and if FFG did sell them the ebay value would crash. But just because some people buy them on ebay doesn't mean there aren't people who consider them a status symbol. But as long as FFG thinks of them that way then I don't see them selling them.

Alternate art FAQ manuals.

If FFG sold templates and tokens they'd probably toss something in the rules like they did when they released their mats. I like that 3rd party manufacturers are able to create and sell templates and tokens that are legal to use. I'd hate to see that go away just so folks can buy official ones.

Please FFG, I want alt art faq and acrylic rules references.

It is entirely possible their acrylic print on demand isn't up to the task as is their card/play mat systems are.

I asked Alex Davy if this was a possibility a while back when he came to our regionals.

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: It would sort of be stepping on Organized Play's toes and make the content they put out as prizes less special. And other reasons.

not gunna happen.

I've been using the same core set templates for nearly 2 years and they're still holding up fine without any sort of modification. I've seen other people's though that are falling apart, what are you people doing to your templates?

This! Mine are still going strong. I'm careful with them and they're lasting fine.

In terms of the wider question, I'm not fussed in the slightest by acrylic tokens. I've already got bags of the card tokens so even if some wear out, it isn't an issue. I can understand that central components like the range ruler and maneuver templates that are always used every game might be a valuable upgrade. We'll all get a second set anyway though if a new core set were to hypothetically be released.

The acrylic I would really value would be bomb tokens. Any bombs that remain on the board, you might quickly be limited by in terms of how many physical tokens you own, so official bomb tokens would be useful.

For other prizes, I think that the way to go is alt art upgrade cards. The pilot cards are all well and good, but you will always have as many as you need to actually play. Upgrade cards are more limiting. How much more valuable would an alt art C3-PO crew be? Or Autothrusters? Predator? Engine Upgrade? Cards people will actually want and use because they need them to build lists, rather than just because they want a status bump.

Also, with all the third party acrylics around, I can't tell which are official and which aren't anyway.

I have (way) more than enough tokens from the ships that I've already purchased to want more of them. Even if they are official and neat

I just want official measurements released so at least all 3rd party dimensions are the same.
