Not of this universe

By Comrade Cosmonaut, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I was wondering what, if anything, people are adding or seeing their GMs add to their games which come from outside the Star Wars mythos.

I don't mean things from Legends level canon, either, since, technically, one might argue that could count.

For example, my players have come across several ancient statues of these bipedal avian people. The statues interact with their datapads and instruments in odd ways they can never figure out. Twice now they've seen (once in a recording) a woman wearing orange and yellow power armor kicking everyone's butt all the time.

I think it wasn't until after her second appearance when one of my players realized this was all a Metroid reference.

Oh! And I have a privateer/treasure hunter with yellow hair who is very feminine for a man. He has a maurauding human male companion, a force sensitive female human companion, and a cowardly and ever hungry toydarian. They're looking for mystical gems they claim will allow them to banish all the black holes in the galaxy... And it's Pirates of Darkwater.

Pfft. It would be a better Metroid reference if they all thought she was a man first.

Only kidding. That's pretty awesome.

I'm a huge fan of Halo, so I've inserted a couple nods, mostly in the form of a few sideways references to a cult of religious aliens hell-bent on seeing humans removed from the galaxy. I've also littered the galaxy with ruins from a Forerunner-style race, but that actually factors heavily into my campaign's long story.

I've also considered taking the Flood and using a watered-down version of them as a major, extra-galactic threat.

I've introduced Stargate SG-1 into my games. Not as an actual faction mind you, but instead as a hit holonet show. It's all about a crack team of Imperial special projects team exploring worlds through an ancient Sith gate network. What will they find on their next adventure? Check your local holonet network for show times.

The Stargate reference is awesome.

These are excellent. I love that Stargate is a television show again. That's hilarious.

I wholeheartedly agree that the Flood should be introduced. Let your players stew in knowing what they are but the PCs have to find out.

Well, more of a cross over really.

Oh the horror.

I had a GM do the inverse: he introduced the force and lightsabers on May 4th into our D&D 3.5 campaign.

Gree had Hypergates and Kwa had Infinity Gates.

Sorcerers of Tund are related to Sith & split at the end of the Infinate Empire - who knows what they know about the Rakata & hyperspace.

I've pondered having characters drink raktajinos

I'm thinking of introducing a clan of Mandalorians that bear a striking resemblance to the War Boys from Fury Road. They've got a cool design and they seem freaky enough that I can see them being a more feral Mandolorian tribe. And General Furiosa is just a cool name.

(Plus I'll look super creative, since none of my players have seen the movie!)

I've made a few Babylon 5 references, mostly in dealing with Ancient Enemies and Far Outsiders (Shadows or Vorlons? Who knows? In all instances, I have kept it fairly vague). I did introduce a couple of species (Narn and Drazi) and they translate very well to the Star Wars universe and treated Minbari as a 'lost' civilization of rumor and legend. In another game, I introduced Erasmus 'the thinking machine' renegade from the Dune prequels series as a foil and foe.

I like elements of the technology in Mass Effect (I love blasters but slughtrowers have great use and utility) and have a soft spot for elements of Firefly and Star Trek (I did create a freighter loosely based on the Firefly-class that was used by NPC's).

Overall, I prefer introducing multiple elements of multiple series that have their own complexity within my game but interact peripherally or as needed. Sometimes they are mere window dressing and sometimes not (such as one of my player's Drazi Marauder... perfect spec for a species that loves nothing more than a good scrap :)

Love the other elements from above as well... except maybe the Pony-Bantha... my daughter would love it though :)

But now I know. And knowing is half the battle.

Back in our West End Star Wars days we created a race that was basically the Asari from Mass Effect, with a few tweaks.

Some stuff I've done/am doing in my games:

1) One of my former players loved Halo, and was working, in-game, to find ways to get a suit of powered armor similar to Spartan armor. This was before Hard Points were a thing, so he was essentially custom building the armor around a frame. The game ended (he was deployed with the military and the group decided to stop the campaign in his honor) before he had the chance to even test it out.

2) I've always loved Phantasy Star, and I sneak a few elements in from time to time (not to mention having a pile of Phantasy Star notes for EotE that I really need to finish now that I have F&D). One of my favorites is the archaeology elements of Phantasy Star Online: there's a technologically advanced species that was completely killed off, and the party will find it.

One game I ran (that flopped due to a TPK) used something similar, only there was a capital ship of Numans in stasis in an area the Empire was desperately trying to mine through, but kept getting setbacks due to the weather (a controlled storm that acted almost sentient) and local beasts (bio-monsters).

3) I snuck a sneak peek of the Galactica into an old game as it jumped to hyperspace, and the party found some remains of a Viper at one point.

I have a Wookiee that likes to gulp down Pan-Galactic Gargleblasters. He likes to mouth-wrestle with the creature that is delivered inside the cup, and which is normally responsible for the choking deaths of most who partake in this drink.

I once created a post-Endor Imperial Warlord who was basically a Chaos renegade from 40k (without any magic powers). He murdered and slaughtered without cause, dressed his soldiers up in pseudo-Napoleonic uniforms and favored melee combat over practical stuff like air and artillery support.

Because Star Wars is a saner setting, he didn't last long once he ran into remotely competent opponents (New Republic and saner Remnant forces agreed on a truce just to put him down).

A PC I drew up (Chevin Marshal) which I haven't had much chance to play was basically Odo from DS9 in personality, though he replaced shapeshifting with a trusty cattle prod and lots of threats of violence.

Oh yeah... Exactly the same.

In a game that I drafted in an altered Legacy era game I use space ships from other shows to represent different fleets. So the reimagined Fel Empire (much smaller due to loses to the Sith) uses ships from Battlestar Galactica. A Sith warlord had started designing Shadow vessels. Mandalorians had Narn ships. There are so many good ship designs out there. I see no reason why they shouldn't be used :)

Was the marauder Green or Purple?

Okay - another one I've always fantasized about bringing into the game but never had the balls too: Veritechs/Valkyries from Robotech/Macross. A fighter than turns into a giant robot? Pretty keen!

It doesn't help matters that Macross has some pretty badass fighter combat:

An SDF-1 would be kind of cool, too. How can you not love a warship that transforms into a REALLY big robot and then punches you in the face with a battleship!

In the past, I have borrowed heavily from some 40K elements including elements from the Eldar and the Tyranids.

In my current game, the players have encountered some "inky black space crab looking" capital ships that sort of flicker into and out of existence and use a giant purple beam weapon to cut ships open... they also rescued a Force Sensitive guy from the middle of it after a boarding action who had been plugged into the ship as a computer...

*cough*Shadows*cough*

To be fair, I am heavily modifying them in terms of motivation and origin.

Here I was thinking about revealing the Geonosians didn't invent the first Death Star and they were based on an ancient design of which a few are still wandering somewhere far, far out on the rim...

Imagine jumping back into normal space and suddenly find yourselves careering down to crash land on this unknown moon...

They need to have some of Lando Calrissian's dress sense of course since this would be a take on Captain Eo rather than ANH...

I've considered using Macross/Robotech stuff in a Star Wars game.
