Pazaak: Would you buy an official Pazaak card game?

By KCDodger, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Title says most of it. I really loved the Star Wars flavored game of 21. Felt pretty cool, well thought out. I myself would gladly buy a Pazaak card game that was produced by whoever Disney licensed it to.

Yeah I know there's some digital ones, but it's just not the same as actually holding a card in your hands.

So, would you do it? Would you buy a physical deck of Pazaak cards?

It would need one or two rules tweaks. As I recall, the game as presented in KotOR heavily favored the player who went second, which was always the NPC.

That said, it was among the better "fictional games" that I have seen in assorted literature. The downside though is that it is really a collectible card game version of 21, and CCGs kinda suck. But if it could be reworked to eliminate the 2nd player bias and make it wholly self-contained, I might pick it up just for funsies.

I always wondered why it was never released before. I agree with Forgottenlore though, in that it would need a few tweaks to be a good in-hand game. I'd get one just for fun and light play, and you would probably also have a strong market with the RP players too.

Oh totally. I had the idea before, but the upcoming disney attraction reminded me that it should seriously be a thing there.

Also, I better be able to get blue milk.

I would rather have Sabacc or Dejarik. I actually made a holochess table a while back (wood + paint) and have all but two of the creatures from the Star Wars Miniatures game which are the right size... I guess I sort of have the game. Just wish there were official rules...

I'd prefer solid dejarik rules as well. (I don't really like the ones online.) Like you, RogueLieutenant, I have the dejarik creatures from the old Star Wars Miniatures game and would love to build a nice table to go with them.

I enjoyed Pazaak well enough, but I don't know that I would buy it. The thing is, it doesn't look like Star Wars. If you're 'in the know,' you'll get the reference and it will feel fun, but if you're playing with non-Star Wars fans, there's just no hook there.

Honestly, I think Star Wars: Empire vs. Rebellion is a great substitute for Pazaak. If you haven't played it, you should try it. Each turn, you can draw a card from your deck, or exhaust one of the cards you played to use an ability. In the case of character cards, this changes how much the card is worth (from 6 down to 1) so it's like those Pazaak cards with 2 different values. Like Pazaak, you're trying to hit a target number without going over. Unlike Pazaak, that number changes each round, which keeps it fresh. I brought this to Star Wars Celebration VII to play while waiting in lines and my brother and I had a blast with it. It's a fun little game. It's cheap and you will likely never need to buy an expansion. I highly recommend it.

Having played it several times over the years, I agree that the bias is for the second player - and that it would need tweaking - but I think the reason it isn't really going to see the light of day is because it isn't much of a card game, and although it does appear in the KOTOR games, it isn't otherwise "Star Wars" flavored. It is just a rather simple card game that was used as a plot device, and while it served that purpose well enough, it wasn't the sort of thing I would play any more than was necessary to move the story along.

I think some fans will buy anything that has Star Wars branding either because they suffer from that peculiar form of OCD that presses them to collect all things Star Wars. I'm okay with that. But as an actual product, I don't think the game stands on its own merit. The only thing that would sell this game is the Star Wars Nostalgia, and it would have to be pretty inexpensive to bait all but the most die-hard Star Wars fans.

I wouldn't buy a deck, but I might admire someone else's geek cred if I saw they had one.

Holochess or nothing!

I have this game and have only played it a handful of times. It always felt a bit stale and boring, though I might have just been playing it with the wrong people or the wrong attitude.

Sure, it's no X-Wing or LCG. If you expect that, it may fall a little flat. But if you're expecting Pazaak, I think you'll find this comparable and even a little more exciting. Definitely a filler game, but it's my filler of choice for 2 players.
