Small/Large ship's simultaneous overlap of the huge ship and asteroid and Huge ships touching sections attack

By karadjordje, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Heya all, appreciate your input on this:

1. when a small/large ship's movement would end overlapping a huge ship, it follows the rules under “Plastic Bases Overlapping” of the core rulebook. In case that would also land the said ship on an asteroid, would I be correct in assumption that both rolls for damage would take place (unlike the case when a ship's movement template/base would overlap more than one obstacle)?

2. "when a huge ship executes a maneuver and the final position of one of its sections overlaps one or more huge ships, use the standard rules for
overlapping ships as described on page 17 of the core set rulebook. However, the huge ship that moved does not skip its “Perform Action” step. Instead, both huge ships are dealt one faceup Damage card; each player draws this Damage card from the deck that corresponds to his ship’s affected section. Additionally, the player controlling the overlapping ship rolls one attack die and suffers any damage ( ) and critical damage ( ) rolled." Does this imply that the "touching sections" will not be able to shoot at each other, or that those huge ships will not be able to shoot any of each other's sections, at all?

Thank you in advance :-)

would I be correct in assumption that both rolls for damage would take place...?

Yes, you're correct.

Does this imply that the "touching sections" will not be able to shoot at each other, or that those huge ships will not be able to shoot any of each other's sections, at all?

This one is more complicated. My answer would be that rulebook for Huge ships implies (although it doesn't state) that you treat the two sections as independent ships in terms of targeting, which in turn implies that only the section that is actually in base contact is prevented from attacking. But it would be a good opportunity to e-mail FFG customer service with a rules question.

To my knowledge, the faq says only the fore takes the damage no matter what part hits.

The second question is worth sending to FFG. With what we have, I'd say that huge ships in base contact can't shoot at each other at all. The Huge ship rules point to the normal rules for overlapping on page 17 of the Core rules, which says:

Ships whose bases are touching cannot declare each other as a target during the Combat phase while their bases remain touching.

Since huge ships count as a single ship with multiple bases, and the huge ship rules don't give any exception on this point, I think it applies to both sections of both ships. There may be an argument that since the huge ship rules make reference to the "affected section," then the other section must be an "unaffected section," so the overlapping rules don't apply to it. But personally, I wouldn't rule it that way until we have official word that that's the intent.

Thank you all for clarification and opinion. I have indeed sent the question to FFG, however a reply is still pending. Maybe they are working hard on the new FAQ :)
