If a Tyranid card tells you to infest a planet, you do so. Infestation just makes certain Tyranid actions more powerful. Non-Tyranid players that win a battle at a planet that is infested can remove the infestation token, a choice that must be made before triggering teh battle ability.
Only 1 infestation token can be on a planet at a time, and only the 5 planets in play can be infested(one's not flipped cannot be infested yet)
Edited by C2KSo only non-tyrranids can remove infestation? That makes things easier rules-wise in 'nids vs 'nids matches. Although some very tricky decisions about where to infest as you likely both benefit! Interesting stuff!
Infestation markers are two sided. Only you benefit from your side and only you can remove the other side

It doesn't say that on the rules sheet. Only non-infested planets can become infested. And it is very clear that only non-Tyranid players can remove infestation. So in the mirror match, infesting a planet could help your opponent as well.
Edit: and to add to that, only 1 infestation token can ever be on a planet.
