Yoda would not approve.

By Shado, in X-Wing

Been dreaming of the possible future...

If the Awakens factions are going to be compatible with the existing X-Wing, there could be some fun "pairs" matches ahead. Rebellion and Resistance vs. Empire and First Order.

I would like to try a 4 player match with the factions sided like above, each player a different one of those 4 factions with a 150 points to spend. Also, each player has the option to spend up to 50 of their points "hiring" from the scum faction.

Then go at it on a 6'x3'.

Anyone else dreaming up any new possibilities?

I got a question. Why is it called a Resistance? Why not call it the Alliance now as the empire was overthrown and they are no longer rebelling? But then again that would also be asking why a democratically elected leader was given the title of Queen.

I am of the opinion we are going to get more of the high-ho, we are the good good small guys, they are the bad bad bad big (brother) guys, western shoot em up, they're communists, and look different from us and we should napalm them, and rewrite history so we forget it all and then shoot some movies about it!

In other news, we are in the year 2015 (or was it 2016?). we arent the "good guys". 1984 was 31 years ago, animal farm was never ago, and hey look! that starkiller base looks like north korea, hmmm. i wonder why.

Why not call it the Alliance now as the empire was overthrown and they are no longer rebelling?

Or, y'know, why not call it the "New Republic"..?

My own personal theory, but the reason given is that The New Republic (for lack of a better term) have been locked in a Cold War where their current policy is appeasement with the First Order. The Resistance are the Rebels, under a Leia who never forgot Alderaan, who are still fighting.

Because jarjar abrhams likes to change things for the sake of it, why did Klingon get that terrible remake for into darkness because reasons.

Major reason I'm hesitant over the movie.

Im out of likes for the day :-P

And I most definitely agree.

Rather than trying to intelligently integrate the expanded universe canon, they call it defunct and go"hey JarJar you made such a mockery of Star Trek here is Star Wars for you to mess with"

Are you sure? They killed the leader and the biggest weapon, but they didn't clean the galaxy out of the Imperial Fleets and armies. The Empire, while fractured, still likely controls most of the galaxy through sheer force, angry and confused about what happened and the future.

I doubt the Wave 7.5 stuff involves new factions. They'd have, what, one, two ships each, compared to the eight or so the three factions have. Furthermore, a new faction followed by a wave with none of that faction?

Because there's a remnant of the Empire. So, you know, a resistance to that remnant exists, and is so called.

We are the resistance that rebels against the republic turned empire to establish our democratically elected monarch that will bring peace to the galaxy through acts of war against a.... uh  GO KISS A WOOKIE!

;)

My thought is that after Endor, the alliance, significantly weakened and having accomplished their goal of assasinating the Emperor and destroying the death star, signed a peace treaty with the remains of the Empire - the main issue was having an emperor. If the empire re-established the senate, it would appease most veings. The resistance is made up of the rebels from the alliance that refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the empire, or seek vengance for loved ones lost in battle or Alderaan.

The first order, is probably part of the empire but apart. They are a faction within the greater political structure.

As soon as aftermath novel and comics come out, we'll see of course.

Have you actually read the EU around the timeframe the new films are? The NJO is not exactly well loved, and post NJO is just bad.

I am of the opinion we are going to get more of the high-ho, we are the good good small guys, they are the bad bad bad big (brother) guys, western shoot em up, they're communists, and look different from us and we should napalm them, and rewrite history so we forget it all and then shoot some movies about it!

Fascists, surely. Roger Griffin (quoted in Wikipedia, but I want to emphasize that's not where I first encountered this definition) describes three necessary and sufficient conditions for a fascist ideology:

(i) the rebirth myth, (ii) populist ultra-nationalism and (iii) the myth of decadence"

The Empire has a rebirth myth: it's even called the New Order. It's an ultra-nationalist organization, at least as far as we can distinguish the concept of nationalism on a galactic scale (think about all the "with us or against us" propaganda, for example). And there's definitely a myth of the decadent, moribund Republic.

It also had a couple of other distinguishing features of fascism: a notion of ethnic purity and superiority, as applied to humans over non-humans, and massive corporations that existed in partnership with the state (e.g. Kuat Drive Yards, Sienar Fleet Systems, and Czerka Arms).

There are lots of other definitions of fascism, too, but the Empire meets all of them. Definitely not communist.

Because if you're going for examples of an authoritarian cult of personality recognizable to a 2015 audience, you're going to aim for either Nazi Germany or North Korea (or preferably, the overlap between them).

Okay, look. They're going to write movies in the post-Endor era, but they have a problem: that ground is not only traveled but trampled. Oh, and there's a few million fans who are going to scream bloody murder if anyone puts a foot wrong. Oh, and since the EU chronology extends for decades, they not only have to work in and around (e.g.) the Thrawn trilogy, but they have to make sure they don't nudge anything out of place that will affect anything that happens later in the novels.

Oh, and 90% of the stuff they're stepping carefully around is awful.

The "EU is no longer canon" announcement was the intelligent way to handle it.

Rather than wasting time and effort trying to integrate the mostly terrible expanded universe canon, they call it defunct and go"hey J.J. you made the best and most watchable Star Trek movies since the 1980's, here is Star Wars for you to mess with"

Fixed that for you.

BTW, as for the new faction names, there is a basic plot background that you can find on some of the more spoiler-centric sites that explain it, and it seems plausible. Some of the ideas in this thread are fairly close to it.

I got a question. Why is it called a Resistance? Why not call it the Alliance now as the empire was overthrown and they are no longer rebelling? But then again that would also be asking why a democratically elected leader was given the title of Queen.

I guess we will find out when the movie comes out =).

Lulz I just had a funny thought.

The Empire was Lucas Films, and the Emperor was Lucas. He had vision, but albeit a little crazy. The First Order, which has seemingly squashed the rebellion to nothing more than the resistance now, is Disney now that Lucas is gone..... able to build the empire into it's full potential.

Anyways, from an interview somewhere, JJ described the conflict in TFA as one where both sides think they are the good guys. The First Order isn't some evil empire for no real reason. All will be revealed on Force Friday (sept 4) with the release of Aftermath (book)

My theory, based on clues read from the back of the leaked picture of the back of the new core set, is this;

"It is a time of uncertainty. Unrest grips the galaxy as the influence of the New Order spreads, but a glimmer of hope remains in the heroic forces of the resistance." yada yada yadd...

The Empire having it's head cut off, ends up at war with itself in a power struggle as the Rebellion continues to gain ground and support over the next several years. Eventually the Empires power struggle subsides and the New Order is born. But now the playing field has been better leveled and the Rebellion stands a chance against the powers that be. But the all out war on several fronts that birthed the New Order has only made it a mean and battle harden force. Over the next few decades, unrest grips the galaxy as the fight for influence over the galaxy steadily slides in favour of the New Order, eventually leaving the Rebellion with little less then that of a Resistance.

Perhaps a lot of that influence the New Order gains is because despite the Empire having been oppressive, they still kept a resemblance of "peace" across the mostly human populated galaxy as compared to the years of large scale war that the galaxy had just been through with the Clone Wars. Perhaps the mostly human population of the galaxy sees it as the Rebellion having been responsable for bringing forth more war after a brief moment of "peace" under Palpatines rule. And Palpatine did do a pretty good job of making the Jedi look as war mongers at the end of the Clone Wars, which now here are the Jedi again at the head of the Rebellion. Plus, the New Order may have used the media to trick everyone into thinking that the Rebellion is lead by the same as those who brought on the Clone Wars as the Separatists, like Palpatine did in the EU. The Rebellion may have changed it's name to the Resistance because it has to separate itself from a tainted image.

What ever it is, I can't wait to find out!

I got a question. Why is it called a Resistance? Why not call it the Alliance now as the empire was overthrown and they are no longer rebelling? But then again that would also be asking why a democratically elected leader was given the title of Queen.

My understanding from what I've read is that the Resistance is a single planet movement taking place on the First Order's planet.

All i know is that i need to buy another starter set....which i was hoping i wouldn't need to do.

I have 3 starters. Two more look to be in my future - pending the actual contents.

Rebels + Seperatists vs. Empire + Rebublic

I got a question. Why is it called a Resistance? Why not call it the Alliance now as the empire was overthrown and they are no longer rebelling?

But WAS the Empire overthrown? Remember that this is the first post-RotJ source in the new canon. Just because the Emperor died doesn't mean the Empire collapsed.

In the EU, it took them like a decade to retake Coruscant and reform the Republic, and even then, there was plenty of Imperial territory left.

It's possible than in the new canon, they're doing even worse, that it's been 30 years and the Empire is still in control.

New Order = Empire

Resistance = Rebel

Ships are fully compatible.

Love the new starter and look forward to them making rules changes as needed in the new core set to help balance the game.

Yoda would approve of X Wing having boost.

JJ Abrams is a dumpster fire of a human being... Every single thing he's ever attached his name to , aside from Fringe, has been absolutely god awful... There's no reason to believe TFA is going to make any coherent sense with anything else, and I will be skeptical of everything until I walk out of the theater...

Hmmm.... I was bummed they dropped a blackhole on Vulcan in his Star Trek revamp. But it was a fun movie other than that.

Why did you need to core to the center of the planet to drop the black hole again? HAHA!
