Expanding from the coreset?

By Astrella, in X-Wing

Hi everyone,

a while back I bought the Core Set and I was now wondering what would be good first purchases for expanding on that?

Oh I see what you did there....

But a real answer: If you don't want to stick to a particular faction, I'd suggest a 2nd core set, an aces pack or two, and a few large ships (Slave 1, Falcon, Decimator, Outrider) - those will give you alot of diversity in list building and get you started. That is the quickest answer I can give you at the moment.

It really depends on what side you want to focus on (if any). I don't think you can go wrong with one of any expansion. Both the rebel and imperial aces have good cards. I'm far from an expert, but that's my two cents.

At this point, I don't the second core set is that vital unless you are wanting to build your TIE Swarm

As for expanding, buy the ship you want.

I would pick up a second coreset in a little less than a months time.

The extra tokens, maneuver tools, dice, and ships are all worth it.

Yeah, I would now wait a few weeks before getting a second core set.

A coreset is a coreset, If you had read the contents you would know that any new core set you purchase contain's the exact same contents as the one you currently own.

A second core isn't a bad buy, but unless you have your heart set on the TIE swarm, I would buy an aces pack and a Dice pack.(Or get most wanted and a Starviper, and sell the 2 TIE's and X-wing, if your getting into scum.)

Outrider and Decimator for debris fields.

IG 2000 x 2 for brobots.

If this was wave one, all you would need would be core plus one each of x, y, tie and adv. lots of fun to be had. Now, congrats you gotta get multiples of everything.

If you plan to play competitively, then you have some major homework to do. I would start with aces. If you just want to play because you love the Star Wars theme, then I would buy what ever ships you like most.

Not in about 2 weeks it won't be.

I feel kinda bad for Astrella, if they are, in fact, looking for advice to get in the game considering what's been going on tonight. Could just be bad timing.

I recommend people grow their collection in rough sequence as the waves were released. Later waves introduced new abilities and techniques that are best appreciated after you've grown your skills and understanding with the earliest capabilities in the game.

Although, if you're planning on jumping into the communal gaming scene, this is probably moot advice.

But for those who just want to ease into the game with home play among close friends and family who are similarly new, I think this is good advice. There's a simple joy in just playing the ships you see in A New Hope.

Working on the assumption that this is a legitimate question, perhaps some explanation is in order for for Astrella's sake.

As I am sure everyone is aware, there is a new Star Wars movie coming out this December. FFG has said that they have products in the works based on the new movie, but they are not allowed to reveal any information yet (the date disney has set for companies to announce tie-in products in Sept. 4th, about 2 weeks from now.

Earlier today, someone posted pictures of those products here on this forum and elsewhere. FFG immediately deleted that thread and has spent the rest of today deleting dozens of other threads as people keep trying to post the pictures again.

The OP's question could be viewed as a backdoor reference to those leaked photos.

I'm not going to try and talk about the leaks directly, but just repeat my statement that I would not buy a second core set for at least 2 weeks.

Wait on getting a second core set, it's nice to have but I think you'll get more out of the game by adding a few more types of ships. I recommend getting a couple small base ships for each faction you want to use before buying the large ship, they tend to be a bit easier to fly, especially around asteroids and along the board edges.

For rebels the B-wing is one of their best ships, it's a must have in my opinion. There's an upgrade called Advanced Sensors that works great on it, but it's only available in the E-wing (and Lambda Shuttle), you don't NEED it by any means, but it's a great option, and the E-wing is pretty cool in it's own right. The named B-wing pilots in Rebel Aces are far better than those in the standard B-wing expansion pack, as are the A-wing pilots.

For he Empire, you should get at least on TIE Interceptor, it's super fun to fly. This one's a bit tricky, the best pilot comes in the standard pack, but the upgrades in the Imperial Aces really take the ship to a new level. the Elite Pilot Talent (EPT) upgrade called Push the Limit is pretty much an auto-include on Interceptors, and there's a title that lets you add 2 Modifications to the ship, all other ship are limited to 1 Modification (FYI a Modification is a type of Upgrade card).

I also like TIE Defenders, but a lot of people think they cost too many point, but whatever, they are awesome. They come with another great EPT, Predator.

Also the TIE Fighter expansion comes with two great named pilots that aren't in the core set, so that's a great option too.

For Scum, get 1-2 Most Wanted packs, a HWK-290 (you can use it in both rebel & scum if you have the Most Wanted pack), and maybe a Starviper (cool ship, has a great upgrade for TIE Interceptors and A-wing too).

If /when you get large ships, both the Falcon & Outrider are great. The Slave-1 (aka Firespray-31) can be used in both Empire and Scum (with the Most Wanted set), but it can be a tricky ship to use well. The VT-49 Decimator is the Empire's answer to the Falcon, it's very popular too. The Lambda shuttle is really hard to use well, I'd wait on getting that until you've got more experience with using large ships. The IG-2000 (aka Aggressor) is a fantastic ship for Scum, and it has some great upgrades for the rest of you scum ships.

Just buy the ships you like. Aces packs are great as well. I'd hold off on buying anything scum related at least for a little while.

Just buy TIEs.

Actually it's probably really good timing. If it's a legit question they can wait on another core for now and just grab some expansions they want to try out. Wave 7 will possibly be on shelves next week. Then in like 2-3 weeks they can consider more options. Just don't buy extras of stuff until you know what else you can get in the near future.

Wait for the 2nd one.

If you plan to play competitively, then you have some major homework to do. I would start with aces. If you just want to play because you love the Star Wars theme, then I would buy what ever ships you like most.

Is the balance very off then? Like, could I play casually / in casual tournaments with ships I like and not get trounced / have a fighting chance at least or are there really a bunch of things I should avoid?

I'd only heard rumours about episode VII stuff, I've been wanting to post this since Saturday but it took a while for my first post to get approved so I could get to this.

Avoid worrying about winning. Your first tournament should be a fun experience and likely will be a learning experience. Focus on playing the game correctly. Once you have the rules down, focus on concentrating your fire to take down your enemy, one ship at a time, as opposed to just spreading out your fire all over the place. Then work on looking at WHY you lost your last battle, and figuring out what you might have done differently.

And for ships and tournaments, one of the simplest tournament level builds is a millineum falcon and 2 X-Wings, so in adidtion to your core set, get a falcon and a single X-Wing expansion (It has Wedge in it!) and you can come up with a pretty darn effective 100-point build with only those 3 ships.

I can't speak for other groups, but my group loves to play fun combos and fun ships, even if they're not competitive. This changes around Store Championship and Regional season, but for the most part any list is viable because we aren't building hyper-competitive squads. Hopefully your area is the same.

Balance has been good. Just obviously more toys released that unlock more abilities and sometimes those unlock more potential.

Edit: I'd claim ninjas beat me to the post but I took a moment to look behind me and saw none. Then posted four minutes late.

The balance is mostly fine, however there are a few things that tend to do very well competitively. For the most part any decent squad that a good player brings has the potential to do well. A good player that really likes Luke, Wedge, and Biggs and has a lot of practice flying it will tend to beat an average player that jumps to whatever the new hotness in the meta happens to be. FFG has a history of releasing upgrades meant to "fix" under-performing ships.

The top tier squads tend to be consistent performers that aren't overly affected by the swing of the dice, don't have a lot of bad match-ups, and work well with the way that tournament scoring works.

Imperial Aces and Rebel Aces are ideal first purchases after core set.

Then go for whatever you feel like after that :)
