New X-Wing Limited Format - Draft

By GoldSquadron, in X-Wing Organized Play

Now that we get a break from championship play until worlds in November I've been thinking about alternative fun ways to play X-Wing. For a while I've wanted to play in a Limited format where people have to construct their squads on the fly with out every upgrade and pilot available to them. Unfortunately the only downside to the living model FFG uses is there isn't a great way to do a draft or sealed play because the entry cost of the event would be so high. But when gearing up for fantasy football season the idea came to me to do a draft similar to how you would draft your fantasy football team. After a few iterations and lots of input from other great players in our community we have decided to give it a go.

So I welcome you to join us for our first X-Wing draft format all the ships for this format will be provided but you do need your own tokens, templates, dice, damage deck, and upgrade cards for this event. Below is the rules for the draft feel free to post an questions you might have.

Star Wars X-Wing Draft Format
X-Wing Draft is a limited format where each player will draft pilots in order to construct their squad instead of bringing a preconstructed 100 point list.

1. Players may pick any ship regardless of faction to comprise their squad.

2. The first round of the draft will have a random pick order assigned to everyone.

3. Starting with the first player in the draft everyone will have 1 min to draft any pilot that is available.

4. Once a pilot has been drafted to a player’s squad no other player may draft that pilot so for the purposes of this format every pilot is basically unique. For example if a player selected an Academy pilot that ship and card will be removed from the table and no other player may select that pilot.

5. Each round after the first round the pick order will be based on the TOTAL squad points each player drafted in all previous rounds.

6. The player with the lowest number of squad points will draft first and may draft as many ships as necessary so they are no longer the lowest squad total. If point totals are tied. Whoever has fewer ships picks. If still tied whoever has had the most recent pick gets to pick

7. Rounds of pilot selection will continue this way until all players feel they have drafted enough points to make a squad under 100 points. Players may stop drafting when ever they choose. If you only want to draft 2 ships and use a bunch of upgrades that is your option.

8. Once the draft is completed players may add any number of upgrades from their collection to the ships they drafted. All upgrades must still follow any ship or faction requirements and your squad must be 100 points or less.

I like the idea, but I would take it a few steps further. Add upgrades to the draft (one of each upgrade available), and keep the requirement that each squad be only one faction. Also, allow for trades between players.

1. Drafting upgrades just adds extra time to the draft we will most likely have over 20 people for this draft.

2. There are over 126 different pilots not including the new TIE advanced that just came out with the Raider. If you make all the upgrades unique you will run out of certain upgrades you can draft or equip and will degenerate certain ships and lists from being drafted.

3. The Idea is to try something different mixing factions allows for some new exploration other wise everyone will just try to draft the same combos played in 100 point dogfights.

I really like the limited X-wing idea, but perhaps the other way around? How about draft the upgrades and then take whatever ships from your collection that you want? To me, that would REALLY change the possible options and make for some interesting combinations or at least force people to think of less commonly used upgrades.

Something to consider!

The upgrade stuff was looked at, but like said above. It will be very time consuming of an event as is, and the upgrades being drafted will add even more time to this event.

With players having free reign of what upgrades they can put on there appropriate ships, it allows them to try and draft a certain strategy and know roughly what points they want to aim into ships for the draft

Due to the limited nature of only 126 ships possible to field this event will be capped at 36 players.

Just one week from this awesome event happens

The amount of possible new lists has me super excited. I am also finding trying to rank these ships to be pretty fun and interesting.

How did this go?

By current count there's around 150 pilots and 150 upgrades in the game. If you've got 18 players, each should be able to pick around 8 pilots each and 8 upgrades each.

But that's 16 picks for each player - so even if each player does their picks in 1 minute, that 288 mins total - or around 5 hours, just for the draft...

It was a huge success. I had a great time.
