Another "storage" thread?!

By derekstanggt, in X-Wing

I got three Plano 5231 when they were on sale at Menards. The clear portion can hold a bunch of small base templates and most of the small based ships. It should still be good with what we know is coming, though I may need another solution for the dials and bases, since I have a LOT of them for Imperials. Ghost is going to have be displayed with the Epics, though...

What I'm looking for is a single, clear plano 'tray' that has curved bottoms so I can pull tokens out easily during a match AND... and it has one long compartment for the manuever templates & range ruler. I've been looking but still no luck. I prefer to take 'only what is needed' to tournaments and that all fits in a plastic toolbox with top handled tray. But I'd like to just throw my ship box & game-pieces box into my Dickie's DJ bag and roll out... having one hand free & still carry a play-mat. I just need that perfect tray- mentioned previously.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

How I roll:

For my main storage I use the double-sided blue Plano tacklebox with wall2wall black-felt lined compartments.I use the outside clear compartments to hold my ship dials & tiles. Easy to see and access but I'm gonna run out of room soon. I might convert my toolbox to hold large base ships once Wave8 hits. My huge ships go into my Darth Vader (molded mask) "rolling carry-on", which is badass ($35 on Amazon). I hold my cards in a binder. I use 2" coin pages for upgrade cards- holds 16-32 sleeved cards per page... nice & snug but easy to access (90 cents each at coin shop). I keep all the mission tokens in a seperate small 3 compartment box, stored in the Vader luggage piece. Then all the "extra" pieces and dupe cards in a core set box tucked away somewhere in my closet.

So question for Chadwick and other guys who use Plano systems. Where do you keep your misc things like tokens and templates? I've been keeping them in one of the four trays, but outgrew that. Then I purchased another 3600 series tray to keep them in, and I put that in the top portion of my 1374. But now I'm thinking about getting some pluck foam for that top portion so I can store the Hounds Tooth, Ghost, and other large/awkward ships there.

I put the ship chits in the same tray as the factions. I've got one tray per faction. The 4th tray is used for tokens. I've taken out all the excessive ones that I don't need. I've got the acrylic Focus ones and all the regular go in a bag in the top. Same for shield tokens. I've got WAY more shield tokens that I need. Any excessive tokens go in the little Ziploc in the top. Movement templates go in that tray, as well.

As for the cards, I won a couple of the cardboard boxes early on and have been using them to store cards. I've got 3 cardboard boxes. One holds upgrade cards. One holds pilots. The third holds all the bases for my large ships. I've got tuck boxes for most of them, but no room for the bases, so my Zuckass box holds the large bases. I used to hold the Tantive IV up in the top, but I got too many tuck boxes and those 3 cardboard boxes now and can't fit them all.

Do you battle foam guys have pics? I'm curious to see how they handle large collections.

No pics right now, but the 1520XL has about two vertical feet of space for 15"x12" trays. Right now, I have my whole X-Wing collection in it, plus space for at least one more 2.5" tray.

I was able to get to Walmart and see what they had. I couldn't find any of the cool storage stuff that everyone had suggested from various places. I was able to find something cheap. I found a tool box for $9 at Walmart.

If I put in my Raider as it is, it takes up most of the room. I can probably cut the plastic down to not fill it up as much, but let me just see how it fits.

Now, I had already cut the plastic down on my CR-90 to fit into the top of my Plano easier. So, it wasn't too hard to fit in. It was a bit wobbly around the top and would bang around. I had JUST found some foam in a box at work that was set to be thrown away. So, I grabbed that and used it. There were two thin pieces I used as a base. I figured I'd have to make some sort of floor or separator between the two. I was thinking of some thin wood I have, MDF board, or even foam core, but this seems to work fine. I then stuck some other foam in the lid. It fits!

I've closed the lid and jiggled it around it it's great! Maybe stick a little bit more foam in to ensure it's OK, but seems perfect.

Now.....THIS is a good solution for me. Freakin' $10 and I can paint up the box to look as nice as I want. Holds everything fine and I can cut down the Raider's box to fit more in. This is better than spending $50+ on something.
