Another "storage" thread?!

By derekstanggt, in X-Wing

Yes, sorry.

So I've researched a lot on how to store and transport this game, but most threads and pics are from the early waves. I'm not seeing a lot of pics and examples from waves 5+, and now with wave 7 out, and wave 8/Episode 7 stuff on the horizon, I'm again looking for "expanded storage" ideas from you guys with larger collections. I currently use the Plano 1374 with the rare 3750 trays and I love this system. However I'm already almost at capacity after just wave 6. I'm thinking my wave 7 stuff (ordered through CSI) will put me over. I use microhanger tuckboxes for the ships so they don't clank around in the trays. I think this system really saves space as well. Below is an old pic of the tuckboxes in one of my trays, I've since almost doubled my collection, and now use a large binder for my cards. I don't have a huge collection (30ish ships plus 7 large with 6 on the way for wave 7) compared to some of you guys, but I'm already to the point of needing either another rack system or another solution entirely. So what are your suggestions for storage? Pics of large collections are welcome!

I've got a Plano 1374 with various trays from different things that I've snagged through different ways. It's a very customizable kit. I've also got something like 50 ships and I'm really close to the edge. I have one tray for tokens, templates, etc. I have one tray for each faction and my Imperial one is bursting. I use tuckboxes for the bigger ships and keep them in the top, along with some boxes for my cards. The Epic don't fit.

I'm looking to get a case that will fit my CR-90 and Raider, but I also want a bit more room to hold some of my big based ships, too. I'm not sure if I can get that, but I hope so. I really need some more space.

If I can't add more to that, then I will probably need to move all my large ships to tuck boxes and move them to the top. I will then spread my Imperials into the Scum section. I need more room.

So you're right there with me in needing another solution :)

Where do you keep your ship dials and bases? in the same tray with each ship? That's what I do, but I feel like it's taking too much precious space

I have the Plano in the picture in the OP and It is awesome, I can store everything (excluding epic) up to current Wave, no room for Wave 7 tho, and I have at least 1 of every ship (2 of each mostly if not more). The top is also nice to put bags of excess tokens and things in.

I use a tray for each faction and the 4th tray is for using in Tournaments/games altho I could use it as another storage tray and get another smaller box for use on table.

Used the exact same case as you when I first got into it but as you can see from my signature it just wouldn't be doable anymore. I use the GW Crusade case with the zigzag foam in in and just take one of the four pieces out so I have storage for tokens. I'll edit and add pics once I get a chance to go out to my car and snag some. GW haters are gonna hate but it is a solid case and can hold a huge fleet. You won't find much love for epic ships in it but honestly you won't find it most places.

I keep the dials and ship chits in seperate containers near the front of it. I'll take a picture when I get home. I also keep the ships on stands, which is nice. I can't do that with my Imperials, though. I bet I could slim it down to hold just the ships in their sections and save a lot of room. I'll have to see what I can do.

Battle foam 720.. I also have two 216s (one imperial and one rebel) for travels packs when I only need to bring what I need for a tournament. the 216 will zip to the 720. my 216s are configured to carry everything I need for a game including ships. while the 720 is mainly for storage. will be getting another 720 shortly. I pretty much have 100 points of every ship + 1... of course the ace packs make that number even greater. the 216s will also carry my mat as I can fold it to fit.. I custom made the cutouts on the bottom tray of each one to hold multiple ship types with various plugs. Most ships fit while being built up and ready to play which makes traveling easier. The top trey holds cards and tokens etc.. I would post pics but its such a pita to do so on this site.. I do have windows 10 now and that might make things easier now.. Idk..lol

...ugh. Expensive foam trays that you need an expensive bag for. Forget it. I've been down that road before for other game systems. It's not like these guys actually need all that protection.

I'd rather just get another couple of trays and put into an old laptop bag.

I agree. While extremely nice, I don't think battle foam is necessary and may be overkill, for me at least. I try not to be too rough with the minis, so Plano and/or Stanley cases are fine. I'd be more inclined to just leave the ships in their plastic molded cases they come in.

Its not that expensive when I factor in the military discount. (and ebay for the 216s) I actually started with the plano route first but it wouldn't hold all my ships. yeah its less expensive but doesn't hold epic sized ships very well. it also holds less so you need MORE plano containers which negates the cost somewhat. I also triple stack some ships like Ys to save space. Ties go in a line.. I use small squares for the X-wings as I prefer to stack them engines down as it makes retrieving them easier( 2 per square). I designed my treys to be faction specific as well. I personally would get battle foam just for the looks..lol as I am into that stuff and I have lots of junk UncleSam got me that I can attach to the bags like bottle holders. map cases etc... They all just clip on.

You got a link for those snazzy boxes?

Nah the white ones for your ships.

just print them on heavy card stock and have fun cutting, folding and gluing! It's a bit time consuming, but they really protect the ships well.

I bought my Plano box for about $25 and it currently holds my 50+ ships. It doesn't hold my Epic, though. I have faction specific trays. I don't know how many ships you have, but the money I spent on my Plano has been fantastic. I'm just starting to get to needing something more, but I'm sure I can figure out an affordable option rather than going to spend $50+ on foam.

I'm still trying to figure out which Stanley case to get for Epic at my local store. People show me links to Amazon products, but I don't want to order it on Amazon and I'm having a hard time figuring out which exact case I can get locally. Has anyone bought a Stanley case to store Epic that they DIDN'T order from Amazon? Also....the link everyone sends me is for 2 cases when I just need one. It's always for 2. I don't know why that is.

Where did you get the Plano case for $25? Was it a special sale?

For generic storage/transport I use the blue 2 sided Plano case.

If it's a Tourny or special event where I know I'm only using a set list, I have a wooden box (from Michaels) that's about 6" long and 4" wide. A 5 strait just fits inside and a pill container holds all my tokens. Everything fits inside except the range ruler.

Once at the event I assemble the ships and put them on top of the box with the ruler. Makes moving from table to table a breeze and your not lugging around a large case/bag/box around with a bunch of stuff your not going to use anyways.

Here's a question I've been wondering about folks with these large Plano storage systems -- Are you taking your entire collection with you when you go play at your FLGS? Isn't that a lot to lug around and sort through?

I've always just been in the habit of taking only my squad list ships, and all the essentials (tokens, cards, stands, gauges, damage deck, etc.)

I have 100 points of every expansion pack + 1 if its an odd number. Two tantives one Raider. I have a few extra Ys and Ties that I got dirt cheep for paint make overs.. got a couple extra Es/HWKs/and Firesprays as well as I like to keep Factions separate. well except for the Es I got them for repaints as well.. the 720 holds my epic ships as well;. however as was mentioned I usually just use my 216s for game days and since it was designed for that purpose it works great it also zips to my 720 should I be traveling out of state for multiple games or whatever. an empty 720 costs about 150 for the custom option and discounts that I get. either the 4rth of July one or my military discount.. since the 216 uses the same treys as my 720 it will also hold my epic ships for game days as well however I have to sacrifice the small ship storage to do so. but lugging two 216s is still pretty easy as they zip together. or I could lug the larger 720..

Nope. I bought it around 10 years ago at a local store for my WHFB stuff. Walmart or some other sporting goods store. Just go somewhere that sells fishing equipment. Wait till they have a sale. When you go in, check all the different options. Pull out all the trays that they have and swap them for the ones you want. I've done that before.

Yeah, I bring it all. I don't know what I'm going to play each week. My group is pretty laid back so we don't really know what we are going to do. I will also loan out my stuff to new people. I also like to play scenarios and epics and often use all my own stuff.

by Swedge

an empty 720 costs about 150 for the custom option and discounts that I get.

Yeah....I'm married with kids. I don't get a huge hobby budget. I also play other game systems, too. I just spent the last money I got for a focus group back in March for Wave 7 stuff and it wasn't enough for the Hound's Tooth. I'm thinking of spending about $12 for something. I might be able to go up to something crazy like $20.

Interesting, that's a brilliant idea on swapping the trays around. Walmart, here I come!

And I've been there with the focus groups. I'm married with no kids, but it's still hard to justify spending a great deal of money on toys. Focus groups are a great way to make a quick Benjamin.

Sometimes a place like Pro Bass Shop works better, as they have more trays. You should look for one of their big sales, though. Find one that is on it's way out and get that one.

I also have a Plano 3700 tackle box to store my ships. Right now my Scum small-base ships are cohabiting with my Rebel small-base ships. My Large base ships are cohabiting in a single open tray. To keep things from rattling around, I use the thin foam infused grippy drawer liner stuff that you can get a roll of for about $2 at Target, Menards, Wal Mart or wherever. I made a template that looks like a "+" so that the middle of the + goes into the bottom of the compartments and the other parts fold to form an open-top box. It helps keep everything in place and offers some padding.

My inelegant solution to needing more storage is to, simply, buy another Plano 3700 tackle box. I have two arms, with hands, so two tackle boxes is not the worst thing in the world for hauling all my X-Wing junk around. If I need to haul my epic ships along with it I can just use a suitcase with rollers and a handle to put everything into one container.

To keep my ID and Target Lock tokens together I use orthodontic rubber bands used for braces, The are small, cheap, and durable.

What I need to do is whittle my token collection down into a more manageable size.

Agreed. I got some trays for my 3700 for $2 or $3.

I bet Plano never figured that miniature games would be market share when they designed tackle boxes.

Hold the phones.....

I just found a 4 pack of the 3750 trays at Academy for $10!!

http://www.academy.com/shop/Product_10151_10051_1507772_-1_

Compare that to Bass Pro, where a single 3750 tray is going for $9!

http://www.basspro.com/Plano-ProLatch-StowAway-Utility-Box-3750/product/48260/

Maybe I could just continue to fill up these trays, and swap them in and out of my case when I need to carry them. Regardless, this is a killer deal!

Here are a couple of my current 3750 trays, pretty filled up.
