I am new to the star wars FFG products and am going to start running the prewritten adventure in the abck of the core book. However, I am having a very hard time figuring out how force powers are used. Does the player roll a force dice when they try to use a power to see if they generate enough points? If someone could break down how a force power is used I would really appreciate it.
Force Points
To straight up activate a force power, The character rolls a number of force dice equal to his his force rating (FR). If he gets enough white pips (lightside points, "LSP") to activate the power (which is listed by power, the number of LSP varies), then it's successful.
If he wants/needs, the user can convert dark side points (black pips) to LSPs at a cost.

Unless otherwise stated, activating a Force power is an action.
The rules text for the power describes what a power does, but essentially you will usually be rolling a number of Force Dice up to your Force Rating and looking for pips to generate Force Points. The Force Points are your resource to spend on Force shenanigans.
1 white pip = 1 Force Point for you to use for free (yay!)
1 black pip = 1 Force Point for you, if you want to suffer 1 strain per black pip converted and also flip a Destiny Point from light to dark.
(This is reversed if you are a dark side Force user...in that instance, white pips cost Destiny and require strain to be suffered if you want to convert them to Force Points, and black pips give you Force Points for free)
Once you've got your Force points assembled, you can spend them to activate your power and any upgrades you might have purchased. So, for example, you wanna perform the Move power. You've purchased the basic power and a few upgrades here and there. You've advanced in your Force acumen and you are now at Force Rating 2, meaning that you roll 2 Force dice! You tell the GM you want to try and lift the bad guys' speeder off the ground so as to stop them from escaping into it. GM says it's at Medium range and is Silhoutte 3, go ahead and roll your Force dice. You have 2 Range Upgrades and 3 Strength Upgrades, so you only need 3 Force Points to pull it off (1 for the Basic power, 1 to activate the Range Upgrade, and 1 to activate your Strength upgrades).
