Loving TIE Advanced

By KILODEN, in X-Wing

ran 3 advanced build in tournament on Saturday......

undefeated, only lost 1 ship all day!!!!!

What was the load out?

How many players?

What did ya face?

Next tourney I enter will probably be 3 Tempests and Vader. The dial still sucks though.

Similar feelings here ... ATC is cruel and delicious.

I won a 10-player, 3-round tournament this Saturday by being the only player undefeated. (Due to time constraints, we did not have the chance to have a Final between the top 2. But I'll take the glory!)

I ran a Sith Lords build:

Darth Vader

X1 Title / Advanced Targeting Computer

Engine Upgrade

Predator

Commander Alozen

X1 Title / Advanced Targeting Computer

Omicron Group Pilot

Sensor Jammer

Countermeasures

Emperor Palpatine

Total = 99

Initial impressions:

* Predator on Vader in a Palpmobile list seems extraneous. I feel like I could swap that out for something more useful somewhere else. I forgot it was there most of the time.

* Commander Alozen's ability probably only became available 2 or 3 times during the day. I would often take a target lock just to make sure I had one. There was one time I spent my action on TL when I didn't have to, simply because his ability was available so rarely, I forgot it was there.

* "Save me Emperor" was a frequent cry in the furball. Having Palpatine on the table, with two ATCs punching in the attack, gives such a feeling of absolute confidence, unlike any other list I've played. A few times I spent his ability to guarantee a kill, only to regret that it wasn't available to evade one more hit.

* Countermeasures will probably be swapped out for PTL on Alozen. He really wanted two actions. In the three games, I used CM once, just because it was the endgame and I wanted the insurance. The one time I should have used it, I didn't, because I truly did not think my opponent was going to waste his fire in the opening joust against a 10-health ship. Oops. Palp went tumbling down the chasm in a single round of combat.

* Vader needs some way to be granted a free action so he can boost or barrel roll before his activation. Does the Empire even have such an option anywhere? I would love to have Advanced Sensors on Boost Vader, but there's no way I'm giving up ATC.

* ATC at Range 1, by the Emperor's will ... that's frequently a 4-hit/crit roll.

* B-Wings vs. ATC ... unless it's at Range 3, all I care about is getting a single hit on the roll. ATC guarantees the B-Wing takes a damage. Save focus and Palpatine for defense.

the dial is pretty bad and without thrusters Vader dies a lot easier than you'd think

the damage, however, is more than worth it. Guarantees, man, guarantees >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.. sh*tty dice

I don't get this. To me the dial seems mediocre. It's not amazing, but I don't see how it's bad. It may not be as good as the interceptor dial, but the interceptor has the best dial in the game. The Advanced doesn't have the 1 turns, but to me, the 1 banks are almost as good (while you can't turn as sharp, they also offer the opportunity to slow roll if you've gotten behind someone). The advanced dial seems to be in the same ballpark as the TIE Fighter and the Phantom, while being better than every other imperial small ship (and pretty much every scum and rebel small ship, excepting the A-wing).

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I'm curious, what am I missing?

I won a 15 person tournament this weekend with this build:

Soontir Fel

RG title

TC

PTL

AutoThrusters

Vader

X1 title

ATC

EU

Lone Wolf

OGP

Palpatine

I lost Fel in one game, sac'd for the kill on the other person's vader. I lost the Palpmobile in another game. 4 rounds, undefeated.

I faced a 3-ship scum fleet with Palob that was pretty nasty, Palp on a decimator (oicunn) with vader escorting, another scum fleet with Guri/Serissou/Palob, and I don't remember the 4th fleet (1st round, so long ago!). I didn't face any rebel lists.

For the record: Lone wolf didn't do anything. I almost always saved Palp's ability for the defense, but its silly good on offense. LOTS of crits dealt out on the day. I'm a fan!

vader + ATC + EU + Outmanuever

Juno + ATC + EU + PTL

Coztel + ATC + Stealth

Greens. If the ship is stressed, it becomes extremely predictable. That's why, if you want to use PTL, you should really, really consider the Mk2 engine.

Yes, but Vader doesn't need PTL.

Yeah, everyone keeps harping on the dial so much. It's like everyone's been playing Soontir Fel and little else for the past few months.....oh.....wait. Nevermind.

That's a list I like in theory, but in practice I don't know if it can cope with Brobots well enough to be viable. 2 hits isn't enough to get reliable damage on Autothrusted 3 Agility that more often than not has an Evade token, and B's gunner ability really hurts the Tempests' defensive strength. The Aggressors hate being targetted by Darth, mind.

QFT.

I played this list in a small tournament the other day and it was fun but the matchup against brobots was miserable. I didn't fly them as well as I could, I need more practice, but unlike fighting triple interceptors where their dice get worse if they're hit and sneaking through a hit is 1/3 of their hp, you just can't really munch through 8 hp behind that much agility.

I went 2-0 thursday night with the following:

Strom + X1 + ATC + Predator

Alozen + X1 + ATC + Predator

Vessery + VI + Engine Upgrade

Went well, partially because Predator allowed me to use actions strictly defensively. Vessery loses a LOT of effectiveness if the opponent kills the Advanced pilots first, though. When the MkII engine comes out, I'm considering taking Engine Upgrade off, and putting the MkII on all three ships, but having engine on Vessery definitely resulted in me having some shots that I wouldn't have. Definitely a build I'm going to play with further.

Yes, but Vader doesn't need PTL.

Lacking one straight and one turns really limits your options in a scrum. Basically hit and fade are your only options. Stress is not common on an advanced but can be deadly. It's the lack of speed one maneuvers that bothers me.

No Tie Fighter has a speed 1, though. I mean, it's just not something the Imperials do.

As for the 1 bank, you can do that and barrel roll to end up almost exactly where you started.

If the dial is a problem with the Advanced, shouldn't Juno be chosen more. She seems like the perfect solution. More green, hard and straight 1's, high pilot skill, able to avoid bumping. Is she just too expensive?

I think she's got a tricky ept choice where she really wants two actions from ptl but also really wants vi for sweet arc dodging and she can't have both so people are trying to figure her out still.

If people are trying to figure her out, wouldn't that mean more people would be choosing her, at least in more casual games?

Yeah, probably, but that doesn't mean they're going to bring her up on the forums, especially if they have a list they like better that they know works.

Okay, that I can buy.

I played AGAINST a 3 Advanced list today and had a great time! They won, but close game against my Y-wings.

This might be a fun 3-advanced list when I gets my hands on a pyoonisher.

Juno Eclipse (28)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Accuracy Corrector (0)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x1 (0)
Darth Vader (29)
Predator (3)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
TIE/x1 (0)
Maarek Stele (27)
Calculation (1)
Advanced Homing Missiles (3)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x1 (0)
Total: 100
Not sure if I had seen anyone point out the synergy between Maarek and Advanced Homing Missiles. Scary.

Juno's a solid choice nice PS and able to alter he move on the fly she just needs MK.II to really shine.

Are we talking about advanced squads winning tournies?

I went 3-0 to win a 13 (2 people joined 0-1 the second round) player Tourney that went 3 rounds.

My list

Whisper + VI + FCS + Intel + ACD (40)

Vader + x1 + ACD + Pred + EU (37)

Tempest + x1 + AC (21)

The Tempest works wonders in this List. I use intel agent to see where there going then I use the Tempest to Block with barrel roll. Then if the tempest still has a shot he still has a decent damage output with no offensive action thanks to accuracy corrector.

I've been having a lot of success with Accuracy Corrector instead of Advanced Targeting Computer. The Accuracy Corrector doesn't need a Taget Lock to work, which means you can save your actions for arc dodging and defensive maneuvers. I often run Vader with Adrenalin Rush (to avoid stressing myself) and Engine Upgrade, and Juno with Veteran Instincts and Engine Upgrade.
