Does the ability of Rhymer work on his own squadron? The difference in wording between Howlrunner (" another friendly squadron (...) at Distance 1") and him ("Friendly Suqdrons at distance 1") maes me think he himself can also attack ships at close to medium range. Am I correct?

Ships and squadrons are friendly to themselves so yes he works. Howlrunner specified 'another' so cannot target herself.
The term Friendly counts itself. I learned that from Redemption.
I would say his unit is a "Friendly Squadron at distance 1" or even closer
