Polda's humble efforts / I painted some ships...

By Polda, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

...and right away I have to admit I cheated of DWRR (Thank you!) on the Star Destroyers with some minor adjustments - like managing to break my VSD's $^*@^*! antenna.

Nice one! I love the differentiation between GSDs with different hangar colour

Good job!

What stood out most to me were your Interceptor Aces. All the squadrons are great, but they caught my eye straight away.

The Rebels got some fancy new paintjobs as well. 19972759904_dcb43b4d6d_o.jpg

One Neb-B is still waiting for it's new colors. 20173703846_b6b3239b9f_b.jpg

Great work!

Loving all of these! Great work. Those Imp Sqaudrons are glorious!

The pallette you posted for the VSDs helped a lot!

Fun fact: it was so hot here the Nuln Oil was drying faster than I was able to spread it around. Hence the dirtier look of the Imperial ships.

I also made some First Order TIEs (thinking about cutting pieces of a paperclip to make some extra guns and a shoulder cannon for the one in the middle)

not my idea I'm just passing it along because I think it works so well.

Those First Order Ties are great, I must paint a few squadrons for myself.

Thanks. I already did that just didn't manage to make enough black bases before I ran out of spray paint to accommodate all the TIEs in the photo.

I went about it this way:

Sprayed the bases assembled (without the cardboard ofc) with Revell Matte Black and let it dry for about 30 minutes.

Then I took Revell Glossy White and sprayed around the bases with the nozzle facing up only pressing it lightly to "spit" small drops of paint onto (and as you can see below also around) the base.

Our local hobby store ran out of matte black and recommended Anthracite Grey which I used on my medium bases.

I have to say the dark grey matches the FFG playmats much better than black.

BTW: I have some more pictures on my Flickr page: https://www.flickr.com/photos/djpolda/albums/72157656641375111

Love it!

I love everything I'm seeing in this thread. Those bases are special, but I really love the DWRR inspired Star Destroyers. They look like they flew right out of a graphic novel. I'm super jealous.

Great color choices & nicely executed!

Looking forward to seeing an ISD in that grey.

Very cool!

Love those 1st Order TIEs!

i love the rebels.... the red and grey, with a hint of blue.... great work

Very very nice Polda! Yeah, DWRR's method works pretty good, I can't seem to control the shade lines well enough to be satisfied, but you did a great job on it.

Nice work on the open source lighting for the engines. You don't see it too much which is a shame as the blue being confined to the thruster nozzles always struck me as odd looking. That and the Gladiator's hangar bays are good too: still like the blue one a touch more. Any decision to do one of each red and blue as far as light sources go?

Those First Order TIEs are real real nice, I'm hoping we see some more in the general community as they are a cool and distinct pattern. Likewise, those are fine colours for the Assault Frigates and the Nebulon B. The stark, deep crimson was a good choice and it does feel right for those kind of ships. The interesting grey/blue shade really does appear like a turquoise, (hard to tell with the light, but that's sort of the point, it looks great) but it contrastswell. They're dark, distinct, and rather menacing compared to most Rebel fleets.

Bases are good, everything is in order, I certainly agree that black bases are too dark (they feel like an artificial shadow, just too dark compared to mats. The dark grey was absolutely the right choice: even shades of blue or brown will work nicely to blend the look of the bases into the play mats.).... Order TIE s have a shoulder cannon now? I didn't notice, that makes them even cooler, that instead of some paltry missile launcher.

Again, very well done, I'm looking forward to your other works including that remaining frigate :)

Vykes - first of all thank you. Based on your repaints you sir have a much steadier hand than I do :D .

For the Glads I wanted to make one of each based on the cards (red and yellow) but man I hate the yellow one so I made a pale blue one instead.

The shoulder cannons are on some elite First Order TIEs, as is that red stripe on the side of the eyeball. It also seems to have a turret on a swivel on the bottom.

Apparently Elite Imperial pilots no longer fly Interceptors or Defenders but overdesigned TIE fighters with way too many guns for a single pilot to operate effectively. But that's none of my business :)

I don't think the bit on the shoulder is a gun. Looks like antenna to me.

Otherwise a turret fired by a second crewman seems like a logical upgrade... :P

Here's a better picture. Not sure why I did not just paste this high-res the first time. http://screencrush.com/files/2015/07/Star-Wars-First-Order-TIE-Fighter.jpg

Seems shoulder cannon-y.

It likely projects this targeting reticle too. :D

Predator_infrared_tracking.jpg

Anyway apart from the second Neb I have two corvettes (so far I only washed them and went over the red stripes with blue paint on one of them, boring stuff).

I'm thinking darker hull on at least one CR90.

Maybe that turquoise (1:1 Vallejo Andrea blue and Olive Green) I used on the Space Potatoes/Whales with a white details (racing stripes? :D )

I was going from the Lego set... Which has the Tie in action all guns blazing and the shoulder 'thing' is still pointing upwards. But I agree, they foo look very... cannon-like.

:P

I definitely want to paint a reverse Tantive in a nice deep red. Whatever scheme you choose from I reckon it'll look ace!

Did some testing on a CR90.

I am not sure I like it yet. Worst case scenario: Toothbrush the heck out of it and start over.

I think it looks great, it's just different as everyone is used to white with red, white with blue or red with white.

I have the same issues with my Corvettes. I painted them in a brown based ivory scheme and they don't feel 'Star Wars'. they are however slowly growing on me (as it were).

Nice work on the open source lighting for the engines. :)

Actually, OSL stands for Object Source Lighting. Open source is something for programmers ....

Did I take the picture with a large aperture setting to tease you about the other Corvette in the shot? (I expect to get to that one sometimes next week)

Noooooooooo... not at all. Promise!

With these I am mostly done with the Core Set and all my Wave 1 expansions (apart from engines on the Space Potatoes and the red Corvette):

If anyone's interested:

my lighting for the repaints is literally just aiming an external flash into a reflective umbrella plonked on the floor.
